one day I’ll finally write that ridiculously elaborate fanfiction that I’ve been carefully constructing in my daydreams for months and then you’ll be sorry. you’ll all be sorry.

Day 1: Favourite main trio character.
I like Lucy, she has a case study in character flaws and grows through them.  Also I misread the prompt and drew an entirely different character for this that maybe I can use another day or just post I guess.

@insidethekaleidoscope as usual you have the best Flo/Lockwood thoughts
I really love the bit between Flo and George on the boat in the show. From the books we know that George sees through physical appearance and likes Flo for who she is, but the main interactions we actually see between them (i.e. not Flo tending to him when he’s injured) are very awkward but cute stilted conversations.
But the show gives us this gorgeous scene where George is not in his right mind due to the bone glass and Flo immediately clocks what’s going on and treats him like I’d imagine you’d seriously/firmly but lovingly speak to a friend struggling with mental health. Because she knows what it’s like to not be ok. She just cares for him so deeply as a friend first and foremost, walks him to DEPRAC, reassures him repeatedly that he’s strong enough.
This has just turned into a Flo appreciation post. We all need a Flo in our lives.
Bonus massive shoutout to Hayley Konadu for nailing the Look™ of someone who immediately sees and understands.

There are so, so many things I could shriek about when it comes to the part of The Creeping Shadow I've reached in my latest reread - gosh, I've underlined almost everything, and the margins are becoming illegible with all my scribblings - but most of them are things other people have already unpacked, and more eloquently than my emotional screeching. Heck, I just posted about some of my favorite details in this chapter. But what really gets me, the bit that makes me (most) insane in this chapter, is the way it answers the central conflict of The Hollow Boy with Lockwood's line to Lucy as they cross to the Other Side: "Follow me, and don't let go."

And yes, I have been waiting for this part in my reread to change my blog title again, but I've had it planned for ages, at least since I wrote To the Heights. So some of you have already seen me lose my mind about this in more narrative form, tied into the heights & falling motif that shows up here too, when Lucy says that this is the hardest leap she's ever had to make with and for Lockwood. But it's worth unpacking more directly here, the way this is in some ways the central Locklyle message. Because that's exactly what he was asking of her throughout The Hollow Boy - Follow me - only he hadn't shown her he deserved it, not really. So much of the conflict between them in THB is Lockwood either abdicating responsibility as leader in his efforts to distance himself from Lucy, or expecting her to automatically follow his lead without really demonstrating that he's got her back. And then he begged her, without ever risking the vulnerability to actually ask until it was too late, Don't let go. But she did, because really, he did first, and she left his company (in both senses of the word).
(Now, this gets us into some of my favorite territory, going fully unhinged tying this to Christian marriage, but that's another post for another time, maybe.)
But now! Now, he's put in the work to show her his consideration for her needs and wishes, contribution and perspective. When he asks her to follow him, even somewhere insanely dangerous, Lucy now has the faith in him to do so. She's able to fall without fearing that he won't be there to catch her. He asks her not to let go, and she has no intention of doing so. She's holding on tight, and in fact moving closer - ready to work things out between them so she can come home.
