“can you be serious for five seconds?” her demeanor changed as soon as he spoke, his tone unlike what she had prepped for. “i met someone named freya at the party - “ she began, hope dripping in her voice. “she’s a witch. she said she could help us - you know, get strong. maybe if we’re both strong, we won’t have to do it.” 

“i am being serious!  of course i think about it.”  luke huffed.  she should be thankful he was attempting to have a sense of humor for once.  “a witch said she could help us.  right.”  he seriously contemplated shutting his mouth and going along with it.  oh, how he wished there was even a chance that this could be true.  “liv . . . ”  his features softened, and he reached out to grab her hand.  “did it ever occur to you that there’s a reason we’re stuck in this mess?  i don’t think it’s something we can weasel out of.  our coven is supposed to be stupid powerful, right?  i’m sure somewhere along the way, some other set of twins had the same thought.”  they still had a few years, it was pointless to get his hopes up when they could be crushed ten times over.  and if word got back to their father that they were looking for an out . . .  “i’m not saying no, okay? but don’t get your hopes up.”

BITING DOWN ON HER THUMB amid contemplation the witch gave up, an aggravated sigh escaping her lips as she leaned back. while at times putting on her little act could be a bit of a pain, some people made it more of a tolerable ordeal when she ignored having to be called by a name that was not her own. one of these people included the witch before her, luke. while the other of course had know idea of who she truly was and what she was capable of nor of her impulsive need to scheme, she did see the usefulness in keeping him around. regardless if that was to drown out her many demons or to test out how he could be useful in her grand scheme. which one it truly was is still yet to be determined. for now, all he knew her as was a simple witch named amethyst. “what? does it really sound all that odd?” she questioned, brows raising as she slightly frowned. 

“truth be told — yes.”  luke bit his lip, very reluctant to admit defeat.  “and that’s saying a lot, coming from me.”  he sighed, returning his gaze to the page in front of him.  “this spell looks like it’s in another language.  like, one not typically found in grimoires — not any i’ve seen, at least.”  he wasn’t even sure where to begin pronouncing the spell, let alone what might have been required.  for all he knew, it could have easily been a spell to bake a cake or to melt the polar ice caps.  “where did you find this?”

for someone who really hated both being around and participating in interaction with others, eden sure spent a lot of time around people. willingly or not. although if they had to choose one person in this fucked up town to be around, it’d probably be the tolerable parker twin, luke. not quite a decade younger than them, relatable and amusing to a certain extent. “why is your coven so fucked up?” and almost moderately interesting, at least his history. his magic. his family.

“that’s the million dollar question, isn’t it?”  luke suppressed a groan, rubbing his eyes from the exhaustion that immediately came with talking about the gemini.  why couldn’t he have been born into a coven that adopted puppies for every witch?  “i wish i had a better answer for you.”  he had so rarely encountered witches outside of his coven until now, he genuinely wondered just how well known their fucked up ritual was.

     “ So, did you ever plan on telling me that you’re a witch — or was it gonna be a fun little surprise? ” Bonnie wasn’t exactly annoyed at Luke and there was genuine amusement in her tone. Honestly, she was frustrated with herself for being so blind to her own ancestry and to the secret world that surrounded her everyday. After getting over her shock when she found out Liv was a witch, her thoughts had immediately went to her twin, Luke. Calling the male witch a friend might even be generous but they had enough encounters between them that she was comfortable enough having this confrontation.

“honest answer? the second one.” luke admitted with a shrug. silly luke. he had assumed that the last name parker meant as much to a Bennett witch as the last name Bennett meant to the Gemini coven. “in my defense — i assumed you were already aware. well, you know what they say about assuming . . . ” he trailed off, with a small smirk. “it took you long enough.”

“do you ever think about it?” after her conversation with freya at the ball, her mind had been on the merge ceremony of her and her brother. they had time, of course. in four years, life in the gemini coven could be completely different. but thinking about it, well? it made four years not seem that long. 

“the weather?  sure.”  he was deflecting.  “or did you mean, do i think about who’s going to win sexiest man alive this year?  all the time.  duh.”  luke sighed heavily, very much not in the mood for this conversation.  “unless, of course, you mean — do i think about the fact that we get one year of legal drinking before one of us eats the other — metaphorically speaking.  because that’s totally not something that keeps me up at night, liv.  why would it?”

eden had two glasses in their hands as they leaned on the wall beside luke, facing him and pushing a glass into his hand. “god, watching originals is exhausting.” with their now free hand, eden slipped their phone out of the back pocket of their jeans and checked the time. “you looked like you needed some company. what have you gotten up to tonight?” truthfully, they figured they’d be less suspicious if they were actually seen with a date instead of prowling around, eavesdropping and watching all evening.

“thank you so much,”  luke mumbled, immediately taking the drink out of their hand and taking a rather large sip.  “i’ve been snooping most of the night.  i couldn’t find anything too interesting — but honestly, i don’t even know what to look for.  i guess i was hoping something would just be labeled USEFUL MAGICAL ARTIFACT or something.”

jeremy had spent a majority of the event high and, with the endless champagne so readily available, he was pretty drunk too. no one seemed to notice him though, which only made it easier to grab another glass. he ducked out, heading outside to get some air, and hoping that no one was out there. with the amount of people in attendance, he could really use some time to himself - but, once he was outside, he found that there’d be no such luck. “it’s all so pointless,” he mumbled. it was more of an open complaint than it was a conversation starter. “i mean, what is the point of all of this? …what’s the point of anything, really,” he added on, before downing some more of his champagne. “everything’s bullshit.”

“if i’m not mistaken — and i might be, this town never ceases to amaze me — but i believe the point of all this is to celebrate the anniversary of this town?  or something like that.”  luke smirked, trying not to laugh at the boy’s clearly not sober musings.  “but if you’re going a bit more universal than that . . .  i couldn’t begin to tell you.”  he took a sip of his own champagne and wondered if his good deed for the night should be to take the kid’s glass away.  “i appreciate your ‘stick it to the man’ attitude, though.”

kai laughed humorlessly as he thanked him, looking over with a slight glare. “funny,” was his response, eyes on him still. “so,” he continued, pulling a pack of gum out of his pocket, plucking a piece from the pack, and shoving it back into the pocket before unwrapping it and popping it into his mouth. he tossed the wrapper carelessly to the floor. “are you having fun? personally, i’ve been waiting for something interesting to happen all night and, i gotta say, i’m pretty disappointed with how thing’s have gone so far.” 

“i can’t complain too much,” he arched an eyebrow, watching the other litter.  nothing luke could exactly act upon.  he was pretty sure you couldn’t perform a citizen’s arrest over a gum wrapper.  “one, they don’t give a shit about underage drinking.  and two, i actually met a cute guy earlier.  i didn’t bother getting my hopes up, usually stuffy parties like these are big ol’ duds . . .  so it was a pleasant surprise.”

luke, she had to find luke. if kai was here, he wouldn’t only come after liv. luke would be the next one on his list. “luke? luke!” she called through the crowds, eyeing the blonde from across the room. her body began to quicken its pace and in his direction. once she got there, she grabbed him away from whatever he was doing and pulled him to one of the side hallways. her eyes were wide, looking around in hopes of getting away from their older brother. not that the red hair would help, right? “kai is here,” she whispered - tears flowing against her eyes. “i don’t know how, don’t know who let him out. but he took some of my magic from me, luke. i couldn’t stop him!” 

“hey, hey — what’s wrong?”  as soon as he heard liv calling his name, he went into full big brother mode  ( even if he was technically younger )  and pulled her into his arms.  his eyes widened slightly, but he remained stoic.  only the quickening of his heartbeat betrayed his expression.  “i know.  at least — i thought so.  i’ve been watching him all night.”  he neglected to mention making conversation with their brother, in order to find out for himself.  “did you really not recognize him, liv?  you’ve gotta be more careful . . .  we’re lucky he only took a little bit.  i’ll keep an eye out.  he can’t be hard to miss, especially now.  maybe you should go before he comes looking for you again.”

it’d been a few hours of small talk and polite banter, and there’d been no sign of his fellow coven members. it was a disappointment, really, but the biggest issue that he had was the time in between being trapped in the prison world and being released. he no longer knew what they looked like, if they were still in portland, or anything else that could potentially lead him to them. he had faith that he’d accomplish his goals, but it’d take time. at least he had plenty of that. “who isn’t? at least when you look this good,” he said, referring to himself. 

“well, thank you”  he said with a smirk, glancing down at his outfit.  luke knew that the man kai? had been referring to himself, but he chose to ignore that minor detail and take the compliment.  he deserved it, anyway.  “you don’t look too bad either,” he admitted cautiously.  petty, but a power move.  unfortunately, idle chitchat was going to be his best investigative tool right now.  shame.

“i just love a good party, don’t you?” he questioned, eyes scanning the room as he looked for someone he might know - or, more accurately, someone he might be related to. he’d only come to the event in hopes of reuniting with them, but not for any reasons a person typically would. he wasn’t intending on using his newfound freedom to get locked up again, but he did still have a few things he felt obligated to take care of. there was an added factor of potentially finding out who, or why, he was suddenly free, but it was difficult to know where to even begin to investigate.

“it’s something,”  luke muttered as he took a sip of champagne.  thank god they were giving it out like candy.  he glanced over at the man, heart skipping a beat like it had when he’d first seen the stranger earlier in the night.  luke was convinced he looked just like . . .  impossible.  right?  kai was trapped, presumably forever.  or at least, a very long time.  like, a lot longer than fifteen years.  and if something had happened, surely the coven would’ve let the twins know.  so here luke was, stalking nonchalantly observing the man who looked just like his dear eldest brother.  “ritzy.  but i’m always a fan of dressing up.”

Adelaide followed everyone and turned to look at the young man who had started a conversation with her. She raises a brow and smiles slightly at his question, ignoring the tone completely. 

“Work. I deal art and the Lockwood family was interested.” A lie, something she dealt with often. 

“art dealer?  sounds fancy.  i didn’t even realize that was a real job — no offense.  just something i always thought was just in the movies.”  he smirked, glancing over to gauge her reaction.  “so is there anything here you’re responsible for?”

“so — ”  as they paraded around, he rerouted their conversation once they were clear of any bystanders.  what a dumb rule.  luke had the feeling these ‘founding families’ were just making this shit up on the spot.  “what are you doing here in mystic falls?”  an innocuous inquiry, if it hadn’t been phrased with such an accusatory tone.  “work?  family?”  luke added, softening the question. // @fidelitasvenatrix​

“oh, i’m sorry, do you?” amusement crossed their features as they raised their eyebrows at luke, quite sure they weren’t wrong; they’d always been overly confident in their assumptions. “and i’m not being sneaky, i’m being cautious. i’m already going to be an outcast because i’m going to be wearing earrings, might as well make everyone even more uncomfortable so they don’t question why i’m asking around.” an eye roll. it wasn’t a huge diabolical plan by any means, but surely if all went well, it’d lead to one. “plus, i don’t dance, so you won’t have to embarrass yourself.”

“i hadn’t asked anyone yet — although i’m not above being asked, so yes i will go along with your plan or whatever.”  he propped his chin up on his hand as he listened to eden speak.  “this town’s a whole bunch of weirdos.  i doubt you’ll be the only outcast,” he said with a smirk.  “oh no.  you’re not getting out of it that easily.  i’m not saying we need to slow dance, but you have to associate yourself with me while i’m pulling out my suburban-dad-at-a-barbecue dance moves.  it’s part of the deal.”

“It sounds like you’re on the right track then. Or at least the kid behind you is,” she laughed. She shrugged. “Mystic Falls is home. I didn’t really want to leave it to go to some fancy school elsewhere in the country to learn the same stuff. Plus my dad is pretty sick, so I’m at home in my spare time. It would’ve been rough to be anywhere else. I doubt we could’ve done it, you know.”

“yeah, we’ll see about him,” luke muttered.  he nodded as she explained.  “i get it.  i mean, i can’t relate at all, but i get it.  this is about as far away from home as i could get . . .  although my dad wanted me to come here, so i guess my teen rebellion thing didn’t quite work out.  damn.”
