On National Tell A Fairy Tale Day, the cover and a few pages from this 1879 edition of Arabella Buckley’s The Fairy-Land of Science. The book was intended to serve as an introduction to science, with enchanting and accessible language, as exemplified by this passage from the first chapter:
“But I thoroughly believe myself, and hope to prove to you, that science is full of beautiful pictures, of real poetry, and of wonder-working fairies; and what is more, I promise that they shall be true fairies, whom you will just love as much when you are old and greyheaded as when you are young; for you will be able to call them up whenever you wander by land or by sea, through meadow or through wood, through water or through air; and though they themselves will always remain invisible, yet you will see their wonderful power at work everywhere around you.
We love this description of a good science education as being a companion through life. Our copy was given to Alexis I. du Pont as a birthday gift from his Aunt Sophie on August 7, 1879. It’s Q163. B92, in Hagley’s Published collections.
