Quick warning: Spoilers in this post.
Props to Pleakley's actor, Billy Magnussen for portraying Pleakley. I think he managed to capture Pleakley's original energy as well as he could with the restrictions that Disney put on the remake. Instead of being the classic "Auntie Pleakley", they had him wear other clothes which does reference to the feminine side of Pleakley.
Pleakley and Jumba not staying as aliens in just human clothing and accessories is clearly a restriction for a live action movie, but it also shows that people WOULD notice them as aliens, which is seen the movie where people freak out or shocked seeing Pleakley and Jumba in alien form.
I also thought the rest of casting was great for the movie. Especially with Lilo (Maia Kealoha) and Nani's (Sydney Agudong) chemistry as sisters really did shine through in the intimate moments. Lilo's actress, Maia Kealoha is an amazing young actress, in which I believe she'll have a bright future in the film industry if she does continue to act.
For those saying Nani gave up on Lilo, she never truly gave up on Lilo. Nani is only an 18 YEAR OLD GIRL. She tried to do as much as she could to keep their ohana together with their parents sudden death. She didn't go to university because only she wanted to, Lilo told her to go, and that it's ok and she should go to uni, because ohana also means not leaving yourself behind. Nani never truly gave up Lilo, she just wanted what would be best for Lilo for a home environment, especially after the drowning incident. Nani did not have the financial capabilities to take care of Lilo if that ever happened again, and she did not want to risk Lilo being in danger.
I am sad that Stitch's ugly duckling scene wasn't included in this movie, and that they cut corners by making Stitch run away and back to the dog shelter to his broken cage. I think this scene also encapsulates Stitch's feelings of how he feels seeing he has caused trouble for Nani and Lilo. He also looks at the adopt poster, which he's sad about as he feels like he never made Lilo or Nani happy, but that he should be in the dog shelter, not worthy of ohana because he's bad. Yes, it removes some of Stitch's deeper character development, but his feelings are still showing through.
The removal of Gantu was also a bit disappointing, but I still feel the story worked without Gantu. Instead, they had to change Jumba into the big bad villain, which I guess no more caring Jumba, but it still does work for the movie.
I suppose these are all my thoughts after watching and seeing internet posts on the Lilo & Stitch live action remake.
