I mean, really, though, what do you do in response to that?

You can't needle his insecurities, because he doesn't have them. You can try to laugh it off, but he just read you for fucking filth, and you can hear everyone else in the room realizing exactly that.

You can't tell him he's wrong, because he's literally throwing your own words back in your face.

Thinking back on the dinner with Ikithon, and just... imagine being this man. One of the most powerful mages alive, with a set of skills perfectly tailored to manipulation and being impossible to lie to. You're passively reading the thoughts of everyone you interact with, and you're feeling satisfied with how things are going.

Your old student is extremely uncomfortable, and its obvious that he still hasn't recovered from how you broke him, which is good. The others are making conversation, trying to needle you, but every word out of their mouths is transparent, because you hear what they're thinking behind it.

And then, just as you're ready to finish things up, one of them stands up, and says "I'm sorry for you." And you've had people try that, but it always rings hollow, because right behind it, unconcealed because you can read their mind, is 'I'm scared of you,' or 'I want to make you angry.'

But this man says it completely without malice, and every word out of his mouth is a perfect reflection of the words inside his head. He means it. And he means it when he tells you that you are a fool. That you're utterly, unequivocally wrong about how you view the world. That he can't bring himself even to feel sorry for you, but that he hopes you find someone who can.

Anyway, I have a very strong mental image of the rest of the party saying things to him, and the background is muddled with all the things they're not saying, and then, in the center of a perfectly clean background, with his words drop-shadowing themselves, Caduceus saying 'I hope you will find someone to mourn you when you are gone.'
