The tiger is a frequent symbol in Thornton Dial’s work. In this work, Dial uses the tiger to represent the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Here, the artist creates a Last Supper motif by assembling pots and pans around the tiger and surrounding it with the faces of Dr. King’s wife and mother, made out of broomheads. In this massive painted collage, Dial eulogizes King by combining these biblical and modern events, exemplifying his respect for one of the greatest leaders of the twentieth century. See this work and others by Dial in “Souls Grown Deep: Artists of the African American South” through September 2 in the Perelman Building.

Dumbo may have gotten bad reviews as a movie, but it got great reviews as a way to artificially extend the copyright of a nearly 80-year-old property, which is the whole point of the Disney remakes.
