🐛 ANIMAL OF THE DAY: the Mekong worm, Amynthas mekongianus, from Laos. these guys can grow to almost 3 feet long. nonetheless they still have Low Self Esteem. one of my jobs at the zoo is to go into the Insect House and give them little gold stars. they do not pay me for this
I’m telling you, worm girl summer is where it’s at.
Oh, you’re going to the beach? I’m going underground. I’m wriggling around in the dirt and muck with my wormy brethren and I’m going to enjoy it damn it.
I want to hear more about the vermicomposting bin! 🪱
I think kid me would've been thrilled to hear I'm spending my adult money mail ordering and keeping pet worms lol!
This is my first time doing any composting and since I don't have enough space at my house to do a traditional composting bin, I opted to do an in-ground worm composter. From the research I did, there are a lot of options for DIYing a worm bin and you can do it as inexpensive or fancy as you want, but I went ahead and just bought a worm bin from the company I bought my vegetable bed from. There are ways to do indoor vermicomposting bins too, but I figured the worms would be happier outside.
I bought 250 Red Wigglers to start with and they seem to be doing good! Haven't accidentally killed them yet. I throw my kitchen scraps in whenever my bin gets full along with some shredded cardboard. Saw some itty bitty worms so I think they're eating and reproducing.
"So, how do worms reproduce? Earthworms are hermaphrodites possessing both male and female reproductive organs. However, they don’t self-fertilize. Instead, two worms align opposite to each other to exchange sperm. Post exchange, each worm forms a collar-like clitellum around its body. This clitellum, filled with eggs and sperm, forms a cocoon when it’s pulled off. Inside the cocoon, fertilization occurs, resulting in hatchlings."
How the fuck do worms procreate? They don’t seem to have reproductive organs.
They can breathe underwater due to a slow metabolism and the fact they breathe through their skin
WORMS CAN ACTUALLY FORM CLUSTERS THAT COMMUNICATE WITH A HIVE MIND IN HIGH DENSITIES
They can regenerate lost segments of their body AND the number of segments in a worms body tells you how old it is (like rings of a tree)
Some worm species can CLONE THEMSELVES. It’s called parthenogeneses and is not currently very well understood
They have five ‘hearts’ (aka five pairs of aortic valves)
Without worms, soil density would increase to the point where trees could not take up water :(
Worms demonstrate signs of ageing – they slow down and develop wrinkles. However, if you tweak a worm’s gene, you can put off the signs of ageing and make the worms live two or three times longer than other worms. Humans have the same ageing genes so it may be possible, eventually, to tweak it in humans too.
The largest ever worm found was 22 feet long (nearly seven meters )
There is a thing known as worm charming and it was used to charm worms from the ground for fish bait. It’s also a competitive sport.
they are an important part the ecosystem and they deserve more recognition!
