on a surface level, apple’s desire for destiny at the cost of autonomy and freedom is something motivated by her lack of awareness. she’ll see the suffering caused by “destiny” from those around her and, having not experienced the same level of pain as them, she cannot fully understand it for what it is. she might pity, but overall sees it as necessary. apple is a person who doesn’t fully grasp what empathy is(literally me).
i don’t think any of this is false. but it’s only part of why she acts the way she does. the core of her selfishness is in how she sees other people, but it isn’t the core of why she values destiny.
cause like, while apple lacks empathy, she isn’t a cruel person. she’s a terrible liar and frequently goes out of her way to help others when they’re hurting or in danger even if no one else is watching. she doesn’t even really hold grudges against people or hate them where it might make sense for her to.
apple’s desire for destiny is better described as a fear of the unknown. where raven is someone who appears meek but has an inner strength, apple is someone who appears strong but is in truth very fragile. yes she likes her destiny, but more than that she isn’t sure she’ll ever be happy with anything else. she isn’t sure she, or anyone else, would be safe with anything else. even if no one goes ‘poof’ there will always be the possibility of some unforeseen consequence or tragedy.
in the first place, choosing your own destiny doesn’t guarantee happiness, so if someone wanted to escape a destiny that they hated what’s there to say there isn’t something much worse coming for them? at least with destiny, you know you’re fate from the start. if you already know what happens it becomes much easier to accept terrible things earlier.
the only real life example is death. we all know we’re going to die one day, and while that’s terrifying, we can at least decide what to do with it before it happens. but we don’t know when or how or why, so the shocking and often tragic part of dying results from not knowing those things.
the topic is kind of spinning out of my control, but all and all i personally think that the destiny vs freedom thing in deltarune eah is ultimately about pessimism vs optimism.
raven says, no, you don’t know whether or not something bad might happen, but that by being granted freedom one’s actions and choices are given meaning—and most importantly, even though it’s uncertain, there will always be a possibility of a good thing happening as well.
apple is a pessimist, despite not looking or acting like it. she fears everything, the chaos and unpredictable nature of living itself, and believes that something will always go wrong even if there’s no good reason to. she doesn’t trust herself, or others, or even the world to bring her happiness. she can’t even imagine a good future outside of her destiny because she can’t imagine anything good at all.
#it’s not that deep ig but i wanted to share my thoughts#apple white#rambles#I SUCK AT WRITINGGGG this is why i mostly draw anyways

something interesting about vulcan blaze (adell’s signature move)
“vulcan” is actually the name of the roman god of fire, volcanos, and metalworking. other than that fitting visually with adell’s fire based attacks, what’s interesting about it is that vulcan’s name in latin is actually spelled vulcanus.
either it’s just a coincidence, or an easter egg with nothing deeper, but i like to overanalyze. maybe it’s a reference to adell in early development being an angel…maybe adell and vulcanus secretly have something in common…maybe it’s some really obscure and convoluted way to show how adell is like, the “anti” laharl
you can go many ways
