Don't think about Agatha being simultaneously delighted and terrified when she realized she was pregnant. Delighted because the chance to have and raise a child with Rio, the chance to have that sort of life, was amazing to her. Terrified because what if she turned out just like her mother? What if she hurt her child? What if they were born, and she held them in her arms for the first time and found that for some reason she could not love them?

Don't think about Rio being simultaneously delighted and terrified when she realized Agatha was pregnant. Delighted because this was something that would tie her even more to the woman she loved, and the fact of the pregnancy happening at all was a sign if how deep that love was. Terrified because what if this destroys the balance? What if something would be wrong with the baby because of her? What if her being Death meant the baby was doomed to die young, or to not live at all beyond Agatha's womb? What if the day came when she had to take the child's soul and the very act destroyed her heart utterly?

Don't think about the two of them planning, dreaming, working toward the future. Debating name choices, making little garments and blankets, crafting a cradle with protective runes worked into the wood. Agatha being nervous about actually giving birth and Rio assuring her that it will all be fine, that they'll be there together when it happens and that Rio will see to it nothing goes wrong.

Don't think of the day Rio realized that nothing could go right. Don't think of her telling Agatha because if anyone deserves to know, it's Agatha. Don't think of Agatha insisting it's not true, that everything will be fine and the child will live. Don't think of Agatha frantically packing a bag with things she might need in case she has to get out and leave the cabin behind close to the time she goes into labor.

Don't think of the tree and the water and the six years of hope and the centuries of hatred after.

Like Outie Irving assumes his Innie is just as radically anti-Lumon as he is. He assumes his hatred of Lumon is something ingrained in his personality! That's why he stays up at night drinking coffee and making paintings, because he hopes that when his innie dreams about the testing floor, he'll say "okay bet" and start exploring. That's what Outie Irving would do, after all. But he miscalculated! His hatred of Lumon isn't inherent--- his desire for meaning and art and spirituality is inherent. That's what his hatred for Lumon is built on. But in a world where there's no meaning outside of Lumon propaganda, of COURSE his innie would become ridiculously devoted to the company.

And Helena!! She is the corporation, that's her whole identity. She presumably assumed that Helly would be just as pro-Lumon as she is. But she miscalculated too! Her devotion to the company isn't inherent, her headstrong and entitled nature is what's inherent! And in a world where she's denied any agency whatsoever, that manifests as rebellion.

It's the same dynamic flipped on its head. They both sent their innies in there with opposite intentions--- one to take down the company, one feed the company's expansion--- only to realize that rebellion and devotion aren't inherent characteristics. Their innies have become the exact opposite of their outie selves, while still being exactly the same!! Because even though your personality is inherent, the values you hold are determined circumstantially. OUGH IT'S SO GOOD.
