1. Little of column A, little of column B. I think I miss being believed in. Even if they were wrong. I miss both. But one of them’s gone, and the other never really existed.

2. Sure. All the time. Then I remember none of us were in our right mind, and the bar for “friend” was just whoever wasn’t actively trying to kill you that week. He was a victim, same as me. Same as Brian. Same as Jay. The only difference is, some of us got to remember who we were after. Some of us didn’t.

3. Yeah. There was. Didn’t make it easier, if that’s what you’re asking. Loving someone never does. Just makes the silence louder when they’re gone, the guilt heavier when they don’t come back.

4. Cheap question. Expensive answer.

He was the first person who didn’t treat me like I was something to tiptoe around or put down. Just… saw me. Loud, stubborn, warm as hell—he made things feel almost safe. Like maybe I wasn’t a lost cause.

Which, in hindsight, was probably his first mistake.

5. 1) Denial. Big fan. Award-winning performance.

2) Repression. If I don’t remember it, it didn’t happen. That’s just science.

3) Avoidance. Out of sight, out of nervous breakdown.

1. Wrote my own obituary once just to get out of a phone call. So. Somewhere past the scale.

2. Brian’s in tears before the dog even shows up. Jay follows right after—sniffling like it’s a funeral and not a fifteen-second ad spot. Alex pretends he’s not crying, but I see the lip wobble.

3. Jay? 48 hours. Alex? Fifteen minutes and a news headline.

Didn’t like him. Thought he was loud. Naïve. The type to chase ghosts straight into a grave and ask if it was the right thing after the dirt’s already settled.

But I still tried to keep him safe. Dumb as that is. He had this… hope in him. Like the kind that burns out everybody nearby just tryin’ to stay lit.

And I knew how that story ends. Always the same—someone bleeds for it. Thought maybe if I ran interference, we’d all make it out.
