Game of Thrones Title Sequence

Rock Paper Scissors Group is the production firm that created the ever-changing opening credits for Game of Thrones. It is a phenomenon that I am truly fascinated and inspired by. And is it turns out, required many more separate creative entities than I originally thought...

“It requires the collaboration of all three branches of the Rock Paper Scissors group. Elastic does the design, which constitutes the bulk of the project; a52 does the computer graphics and Rock Paper Scissors does the editing.” -Angus Wall, Rock Paper Scissors Group 

“Using only pencil and paper, an artist begins by transforming the city into a clockwork model, with mechanical diagrams detailing how the city will build itself in the title sequence. The designs are handed off to the computer graphics department. One team member fine-tunes the shadow cast by the buildings. Another oversees the camera shots, adjusting angles and frames. Still another worker, the so-called smoke artist, adds final tint and color.” Angus Wall, Rock Paper Scissors Group

Freckled Sky

What project interests me? Well it’s hard to narrow it down to one...but I am SUPER fascinated by the work of multimedia company Freckled Sky. They are incredible! Truly amazed (although I shouldn't be shocked) that there already exists a company that is doing exactly what I want to do. Their work is STUNNING. They combine visual effects with life performance to further their story-telling capabilities. It’s incredible! And certainly no coincidence that I came across them on my feed, the morning this assignment was due....

Visualizing Systems

Thoughts are a bit scattered but here goes....

The following quote by Albert Einstein really struck me:

“The words of the language do not seem to play any role in my mechanism of thought. [Thoughts] are in my case, of visual and some of a muscular type.” 

I believe this can be directly applied to dance-making process. Using tools of visualization are key to our advancement process, and also making sure we design FOR evolution. Keeping both selection AND variation in mind. Systems are cyclical not linear.

New Beginnings

First Blog Post as an MFA student at Parsons! Woohoo! What is life?! I dont even know! I am excited for this next chapter in my life. Yesterday was the first day of bootcamp. I met so many inspiring people already. Design is truly the fundamental skill of life. Dance and design....what else could I possibly need?! lol. Looking forward to what my classmates and I create together. So many great minds...the wheels of potential or spinning out of control!

Thank you to everyone who came out to experience ‘buya,’ @mathetadance latest work by Artistic Director @khen.sunny at Speak Through Movement 2019. Khensani, I am so proud to be your Company Manager. Friday night was magical, and it will forever be in my memory bank of moments to cherish. Thank you to @dance2deliver for starting the night off right, with some evoking contemporary dance and video projection! And thank you to our Front of House and Technical Staff for putting out all fires so that we could focus on the dance 🎉. Guys, putting on productions is a TEAM EFFORT. Guys, life is too short. Life is too short to hold grudges. Life is too short to not forgive. Life is too short to not speak to those you love everyday. Life is too short to not live with happiness in your heart and joy in your soul. Life is too short to not fill the day with steps that support your dreams. Life is too short to not come home everyday tired, but satisfied with how you spent your time. Life is just too short. Just a little reminder of how precious the gift of life really is ☺️. Kat I am completely blown away by the selfless community you have fostered in Birmingham. The FILES Arts Project is literally changing lives, and I feel so blessed to have been apart of it this summer. I mean wow. WOW! 5 days ... 100+ students ... ranging in age and ability level ... classes in dance, music, physical therapy, and business ... all culminating in a showcase on day 5 ... and ALL of this FREE of charge for the students! AND this is your 5th year running!?!? I am just blown away by what art ... yes ART... can do for a community...and also by what the community can do for said art. ...from backstage to onstage, I enjoyed every minute of this weekend. Thank you Carolyn for giving me the opportunity to perform Lifeline, a piece that has grown near and dear to my heart. So many lessons in this work! Not to mention, these custom-made costumes SLAY! Wish I could keep mine and where it out! lol but seriously this weekend reminded me of my greatest joy...performing onstage in front of a receptive audience with other dancers that are just as generous backstage as they are on stage. And I will never take any chance I am given to do just that for granted!
