Katherine Dunham, dancer, choreographer, anthropologist, and social activist, was born in Glen Ellyn, IL, on this date June 22, 1909.

Dunham had one of the most successful dance careers of the 20th century, and directed her own dance company for many years. She has been called the "matriarch and queen mother of black dance."

Dunham's original goal was to analyze the dances of the Caribbean, but she soon recognized that this was much too extensive a task for one trip. Her revised agenda included a stop in Jamaica to study a Maroon village, which resulted in her first book, Journey to Accompong.

This was followed by visits to several other islands before her arrival in Haiti where she stayed for nine months. Her work in Haiti resulted in her thesis, "The Dances of Haiti: Their Social Organization, Classification, Form, and Function" and another book, Island Possessed. These pioneering dance/anthropology works were significant first steps toward the now recognized sub discipline of dance anthropology.

In the 1940’s, Dunham formed a dance company that toured 60 countries, founded a dance school, and authored books about the dance techniques she taught. Katherine Dunham was an dance legend, choreographer, trend setter, and activist who forever changed how jazz dance was interpreted. Her sensual jazz moves incorporated with ballet created a style which is like no other. She took a foundation of ballet and added African American, Caribbean, African, and South American influences into it to create a style that is uniquely her own.

Brown has been named Director and Choreographer of the upcoming 2022 Broadway production of #NtozakeShange’s “for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf..." Brown, who will be making her Broadway directorial debut with this production, previously choreographed the Public Theater’s 2019 production of the play. She will be the first Black woman to hold the dual directing and choreographing duties for a Broadway production in over 65 years. My mom always told me “don’t ever let anyone take your stuff away”. She told me the phrase was inspired by FCG when she saw it on Broadway in the 70s. This show has been part of the fabric of my life, and I’m gonna give it my all! I’m extremely thrilled and honored to helm this new production of FCG. It’s an amazing feeling to bring this seminal show back to Broadway 45 years since it opened at the Booth Theatre on September 15, 1976.
