Support writers!

Keep seeing posts in solidarity with the WGA strike that say things like “no one cares about your favorite shows” and “fuck your tv show. I hope it gets canceled” and while I understand and agree with the underlying sentiment, which is clearly “Real people are more important than fictional ones, you dipshit” I don’t like the framing because, well, it feels shitty to dismiss the importance of the work made by the workers we’re trying to defend.

No one cares about your favorite shows more than the writers do.

No one understands the power and importance of tv and film more than the writers who created them.

No one loves tv, movies, games, and stories more than the people who fought tooth and nail in an incredibly competitive and underpaid profession for the chance to be part of it.

They know it’s important. They know it changes lives. They know it can be more than just a story, more than just a bit of entertainment. They’ve loved and respected this medium, continue to love and respect this medium, more than you ever will.

The person who wants a show to get canceled the least is the writer who poured their everything into making it good.

TV and movies are great, actually, and you are not wrong to be invested and care about them. That’s what the writers gave you. That’s what the writers wanted when they wrote it. That’s why they wrote it.

Which is why we respect them when they make the call that this strike and its demands are worth risking it.

The people on that picket line do not want their shows canceled. They want to keep writing them. They can’t, not under the current conditions.

So we accept the risk with them and support them.

But I don’t want to berate the power and importance of their work, the value they put into it and the love they have for it, in the same breath that I am defending their strike. Worthy shows will likely get canceled or derailed and that will be a tragedy worth mourning. The writers know that better than anyone.

So when they say something else is even more important, we listen. And when your favorite show gets ruined, you make sure your fully justified anger and grief is pointed in the right direction - at the CEOs who killed it.

PSA: Don't use Open Office

I keep seeing people recommending Open Office as an alternative to Word, and uh... look, it is, technically, an open source alternative to Word. And it can do a lot of what Word can, genuinely! But it is also an abandoned project that hasn't been updated in nine years, and there's an active fork of it which is still receiving updates, and that fork is called LibreOffice, and it's fantastic.

Seriously, if you think that your choices are either "grit your teeth and pay Microsoft for a subscription" or "support free software but have a kind of subpar office suite experience", I guarantee that it's because you're working with outdated information, or outdated software. Most people I know who have used the latest version of LibreOffice prefer it to Word. I even know a handful of people who prefer it to Scrivener.

Open Office was the original project, and so it has the most name recognition, and as far as I can tell, that's really the only reason people are still recommending it. It's kind of like if people were saying "hey, the iPhone 14 isn't your only smart phone option!" but then were only ever recommending the Samsung Galaxy S5 as an alternative. LibreOffice is literally a version of the same exact program as Open Office that's just newer and better – please don't get locked into using a worse tool just because the updated version of the program has a different name!

One of my fave things in the story of Jesus is the constant and interwoven theme of the small, the weak, the disenfranchised, the poor, and the worthless of THIS world to be shown, over and over and over again as the MOST VALUABLE of all ppl in the eyes of G-d. Mary is, in many ways, the embodiment of all of this. She was female, an unwed mother (i.e. by standard laws of the time should've been divorced and shamed and probably stoned to death), poor, powerless, and YET she was called to carry THE SALVATION OF ALL.

Within the context of Christian theology, she is so kick-ass and that, as always, frightens those who crave power and glory for themselves.

One of the most important ways to understand other people's lives is to get to know them AS A PERSON.

If someone you know talks about transpeople as though they're not fully human, or some kind of deficient without an understanding of their own needs and identity, ask them if they've ever met someone who is Trans. Ask them why. Ask them if they think you (or anyone else) should get to determine how they present themselves to the World.

If you can, without putting someone in danger, tell them stories about the transpeople in your life. Not necessarily stories about their transition process, but about them AS A PERSON.

I, personally, like to tell stories about one of my former students, who LOVES musical theater. Her joy is infectious. We also share initials, so while she was still determining what her new name might be, we shared a name as well. I like to talk about the silliness of greeting someone with "Hi, CJ!" And to hear the response "Well, hello, CJ!" come back.

Silliness is human. She is human. She is NOT to be treated as less than. The more you can help other ppl understand someone else as a person, the less likely they are to blindly advocate against their autonomy.

Caveat: If the person you're talking to is an Angry TransphobeTM, feel free to tell them they can go kick rocks.

There is so much more I could say about this, but there is not enough room. Remember to check with reality rather than believing conspiracy theories promoted, supported, and funded by white nationalist hate groups.

Missouri is proposing 20% of the nation’s anti-trans legislation this session. Gender-affirming care for young folks is on the edge of being criminalized (so much love to trans friends in states where that has already happened).

Please keep up with the anti-trans legislation in your state and combat it. There are lives at stake.

So within two days of each other, Fox News writes an article comparing aromanticism and asexuality to pedophilia, and then Matt Walsh releases a video saying asexuality is a mental illness and asexuals are tricking teenagers into having depression.

Not sure what’s going on right now over in Conservative World, but it’s a hell of wild U-turn for them to suddenly switch from “Oh no! The left is sexualizing our children!” to “Oh no! The left is asexualizing our children!”
