The Doctor had seen plenty of ghost-like things in their long, long life, but never a real ghost. They weren't sure if that changed today. The rushing of the water sounded like whispers (some begs not to be cremated, some repeating a litany leading to one doomed Earth town, some trying to find bodies to inhabit) and the Doctor felt observed, like Sutekh was staring them down again from his perch atop the TARDIS. 

They clambered down a steep edge, and saw the path ahead of them begin to thin, leaving deep pits on either side. It was hardly wide enough for one person to walk safely on. 

It had to do. They had to find Rogue.

They walked gently across the unstable pathway. Small pieces of rock fell from the side of the path, taking far longer than the Doctor liked to reach the river at the bottom. The end of the passage seemed to be getting further and further away. The river seemed to be screaming louder and louder. The walls seemed to be staring at them more and more.

Rogue still needs me, The Doctor thought. I can't panic. I can't let him down.

Shaking, they put one foot in front of the other, refusing to be suffocated.

I can get you to safety.” The Doctor cupped his face with their hand and wiped away a tear. “I promise.” “Please kiss me.” Rogue said; it sounded much more like begging than he intended, but at this point, he really doesn’t care. The Doctor thought they’d get to the saving part first, but they were alright with this.
