Fic writer, freelance editor. When my schedule allows, I offer free sample edits for large projects such as book manuscripts or dissertations/theses. If you would like editorial input but your budget is not ready for a full copyediting pass, I offer partial edits of any size (includes coaching in the margins). Fic writers: I no longer do beta reads, but a small partial edit is a great way to sharpen your writing and self-editing skills :)

I love when this happens. The only downside is you have to actually start writing to get there.
me: this scene is stupid.
also me: writes it anyway and accidentally unlocks the entire plot.

First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom. — Martin Luther King, Jr. , Letter from Birmingham Jail (1963)

For me, it's helpful to avoid using the term "first draft." Ways to make it exist first:
-open and save the blank doc with a name.
-write a summary or even just the premise/hook that has your mind chewing on it
-list a couple of characters and start typing details in a list or bio paragraph
-start drawing a character or scene digitally or on paper
-start talking about your idea to others
-jot down some of the banger lines that are already coalescing in your brain
-start a messy, out-of-order "stuff I want to include!" list
-start writing a scene you're excited about. Literally any scene.

honestly, this phrase has been on my mind more times than i can count. i've kidnapped it, taken it as a hostage with no ransom money because i need it to live permanently in my head.

The way this is accurate though. One way you know you're ready for professional editing is when you are one second away from throwing your computer out the window. When, to quote several of my clients, "I can't stand to look at this document anymore. I HATE IT."
(This is normal, you're doing fine.)

Fantastic post OP!
Is your writing in a slump? Even though you’re doing all the right things. Maybe it’s too much of a good thing. This post is about 5 addictions that can secretly sabotage your writing.

Tolkien's letter to Milton Waldman.
Me, to the the kind souls that are my writing friends. The "I shall inflict some of this on you" resonates deeply.

Getting inspired to write is actually really easy! All you need to do is be the busiest you've ever been in your entire life and as far away from a computer as humanly possible. Hope this helps 🥰

writing is 10% storytelling and 90% rearranging three sentences for an hour like you're trying to solve an ancient curse

I control the narrative, I whisper to myself like a lunatic while the characters in the story I'm writing are not following my orders.

Maybe the most difficult part of writing is knowing a bunch of words and then putting them in a really interesting order.
