Snow comes early that year, unannounced and sudden, blanketing the entire land in its white great silence. The man doesn’t stir, makes Bill get even closer, look for some sign of life beneath beard plastered to his pale face and long hair crusted with mud. It takes him a moment longer to register his clothes, his hands stilling over the tanned leather, the iron hilt surfacing from the scabbard half sunk into the ground. Bill is forced to close his mouth and swallow once he feels rain pooling over his palate, his eyes struggling to make sense of what they are seeing.

“Tommy! Oi, wake up, lad!” It’s a hushed whisper, a brushing of heated words against the skin of his neck what finally makes him blearily blink awake. Darkness still reigns below deck, the crackling of ice barely managing to overpower the snoring and tossing of all of those sleeping now in the bowels of the ship. It takes a moment for Tommy to make out the shape of Sergeant Tozer hovering over him, his thick blue coat pulled over his shoulders, white crossbands glistening in the dark, as if wishing to be pulled.

Pat’s palm feels warm through the light cotton of his pants, the bumps on the road making it seem as if his fingers are drumming against the inside of Jim’s thigh. It’s dangerous this—this position, this game Pat’s playing at with his other hand on the wheel. “Won’t get much more expensive than that,” Pat says, as if his posture hadn’t changed, as if his fingers weren’t resting inches away from Jim’s crotch.

Sol’s hand is on the glove compartment before he’s stopped the car, the shiny black gun that had scared Tommy so fiercely the first time he had seen it, glinting for a moment before it disappears back into the pocket of his coat. Where it had gotten stuck once, nearly getting Sol killed. “I need you to wait here.” It sounds less like an order than Sol’s words used to, more of a request that expects to be met with compliance.

I think writing for niche fandoms/pairings/etc helps stretch the creative muscles. Every fic author should christen at least one tag on ao3 in their lifetime
