What's the worst trap you see amateur writers falling into?
Not appreciating the whole story.
Scroll around "Writing Tumblr" for a few hours and you'll see something to the effect of "I was daydreaming about this big fight/plot twist/dramatic irony, but I hate writing all the stuff leading up to it!"
Everything leading up to the big third act is treated as an obligation. The 'homework' before you get to the 'fun part.'
See this enough times, and you start to realize why you see so many stories meandering around for the first two acts until they can have their big, dramatic climax. You start to see why everything that isn't a Baysplosion is considered "filler" now.
If you're only into writing to write memorable third act reveals, then everything you write is going to be terrible.
There's a video by Noralities going over an old anime, which she admits she hated at first because she was skipping the episodes that were dubbed "filler" by some idiot, and her friend who suggested it to her had to sit her down and tell her that the filler was some of the best parts. And she was in disbelief about that.
"A character-based show feels worse when you watch only the plot episodes and none of the character episodes? Say it ain't so!"
It is a moment of spectacular brainrot in what is otherwise an S-Tier Youtuber, because it's such a basic concept that some people will weirdly fight you on.
Character moments, slow moments, things that might be considered boring to a hyperactive, plot-obsessed weirdo, these are all important. Trying to have a big grand plot without these things is like trying to build a bridge without supports. If you don't have as much of a deep love for those things as you do for the big fight scene at the end, you're going to make shit, because you don't actually like writing.
There are entire genres of storytelling that don't have villains, fight scenes, or dramatic plot twists. There are NO genres of storytelling that don't have characters and character relationships as a core component of them.

you know you’re a writer when…
you spend 30 minutes choosing the perfect synonym for “said” only to change it back to “said.”
you google “how long does it take to bleed out” at 3 a.m. and now the FBI is probably watching you.
you write one sentence, stare at it, rewrite it 14 times, and somehow end up back at the original version.
“this scene is so important” but you have no idea what the scene actually is or why it’s important.
you come up with the best story ideas… in the shower… with no way to write them down.
your characters feel like real people but also you’re like “who are these guys and what do they want from me?”
your brain says “start writing!” but instead you reorganize your desk, reread your notes, and spend two hours naming a side character who shows up once.
you’ve cried over your WIP exactly 67 times and will do it again because the pain is the point.
you reread something you wrote and think, “wow, did i peak as a writer three months ago?”
every writing session begins with the sacred ritual of scrolling social media, opening unnecessary tabs, and procrastinating until panic sets in.
you have no idea how long a chapter should be, so you just… vibe.
you can’t watch tv or movies without mentally critiquing the plot, dialogue, and pacing.
your writing playlist is 98% vibes, 2% songs you’ll actually listen to while writing.
you keep a “murder notebook” but swear it’s not suspicious because it’s for your novel (probably).
the phrase “just one more draft” is your eternal mantra, even though you’ve rewritten this thing more times than you can count.

Eight episodes into Moving and it's already one of my all time favorites. It reminds me so much of Season 1 of Heroes:
Kids developing and learning how to use their powers
A shadowy conspiracy involving their parents
A killer going around murdering super-powered people
Seemingly unconnected people are slowly revealed to be connected
There is a teenage girl with regeneration powers
Plus there is a full 20 episodes in the season, something you don't see anymore. You feel like you're getting to really know the characters. It's old school TV with a new school twist and I love it.

Welcome Folks
One of my goals for 2025 is to get back into writing, something I did a lot of in my younger years. My goal is to at least finish two of the following projects this year:
An SCP Article.
Tentative title: The Sin Eater.
Genre: Horror/Tragedy
Written in the Fire Suppression Department canon, witness how the Foundation handles a humanoid SCP that has the capability of erasing anything that is deemed a "sin". See how the Foundation's cold and analytical manner turns a helpful anomaly into something horrifically tragic.
(I would really appreciate any and all feedback on this one, so I'll be posting drafts in their entirety as I write and rewrite it.)
2. A League of Legends fanfic (a la Arcane)
Title: First of Ten
Genre: Horror
In the fallout of the Demacian mage rebellion, King Jarvan the IV dispatches a group of disgraced mageseekers on a diplomatic mission to Ashe, the Avarosan Warmother. Before their quest can even begin however, the group is waylaid by a gang of rebel mages, trying to eke out a meager existence in the Demacian wilderness. Initially at each other's throats, both factions quickly realize that their survival depends on an unlikely alliance. For when the darkness falls on these wild lands, a true terror emerges, seeking to reap their very souls.
(You don't need to know about League of Legends to be able to read this one. It's all OCs (except the main monster), and anything specific to the lore will be explained. The title is part of a voice line from said monster. I'll post links (ao3 I think) to the chapters on this blog when they are completed.)
3. An Original Novel
Tentative Title: Miasma
Genre: Science Fiction/ Superhero Fiction
Emma has the unique distinction of being the only daughter of the world's first superhero and also its greatest villain. Twenty years ago, The Paladin, leader of the Praetorians, went rogue. He murdered his entire team, including his wife, Emma's mother. Declaring superpowers to be anathema, he now heads a cult that seeks to destroy everything he once stood for.
Plagued by nightmares and desperate to avoid unwanted attention, Emma tries to live the most quiet and mundane life she possibly could. That dream is shattered when she starts manifesting her father's powers and is drafted into the current iteration of the Praetorians. Forced to fight against her own father and the mysterious Miasma plaguing the world, Emma must confront the horrors of her past and uncover secrets about her family that may have horrific consequences for everyone and everything she holds dear.
(I know this sounds like another "Hey, what if Superman was Evil" story, but I promise you it is not. I hate those stories too and this is not one of them. I've had this story bouncing around in my head for years, and it one point it was even fully fantasy, but I think the superhero genre may express it the best.
Also none of the names of anything in this story is fixed. They will almost certainly change as the story progresses, so please bear with me. I'm not sure how I'll keep you guys updated on this one. Maybe I'll post excerpts? I don't know. I'm new to this writblr thing.)
I'll update this post with links when I have stuff for you guys to read. I hope to do weekly updates but we'll see how that goes. Until then, take care.
-Jeremiah
