“What’s your name?” 

Gale’s tongue is as numb as the rest of him, “Buck.”

A flash of white teeth, grin crooked, incisor a little popped out, “Well how ‘bout that. They call me Bucky.” 

“How about that,” Gale agrees.

Bucky examines Gale. He’s got a shrewd gaze. Clever, problem-solving eyes. Smart enough Gale doesn’t like him. 

“What do I owe you?” 

“Two dollars,” Gale says automatically, before he can say something different like, I didn’t give you anything. 

John pulls his wallet out. He smells a little sour, too many days in the cab of a truck, a little salty, yeasty, hair that’s been marinating in the crevices of a body and drinking in the moisture. He drops a pair of crumpled fives on the bench, knocks his knuckles on the backrest like punctuation and heads across the parking lot. Gale watches him come to the intersection, waiting at the stoplight until it’s safe to cross, back to the truck stop and into the gloom. 

It’s not until he hears the rumble of an engine, the quiet purr of a big rig and the flash of headlights going by that he reaches for the ten dollars, smoothing them out flat and then folding them in half, tucking the bills into his back pocket. 

Heads inside, pays for his pie, and his coffee, and decides to call it an early night.

also fucked up how AA is like "if you ever drink again its all over for you! one beer and you're instantly an alchy again" its a great way to establish a self-fulfilling prophecy that sends people right back to the meetings and shit. one of my biggest milestones in recovery is the fact i can chill and have a couple beers or a glass of wine and not go out of control. obviously it looks different for everybody, which is exactly the problem with orgs like AA and NA that drill you with the idea you are powerless to your addiction and there's nothing you can ever do about it besides pray or call some guy and you need to feel bad and guilty for being an addict.
