Chopin by ear?
This past Saturday I played for four hours for a very nice private party with a very nice Steinway. The guests seemed particularly ' tuned-in' to my playing and it was a wonderful evening. Something a guest said to me, which I have heard before, always puts me in a position where I cannot explain myself quickly. The comment was ' how nice that you play by ear'. Yes, I can and do play by ear but I much prefer to study a piece, learn a specific arrangement, improvise if necessary, but the truth is I memorize everything and for me that takes a lot more of my time and effort than playing by ear.
I bring along cue cards with lists of songs I know in case I need a prompt but I never bring along music. Besides that would mean boxes of music. I am not going to spend my evening flipping through pages.
Do listeners really think you can play Chopin by ear?

Why do I love Chopin's music so much? Some things are better left unexplained....or better yet they are simply too much for words. My song
' Falling Apart' was inspired from 2 chords in a piece of Chopin's.

Steinway..
Today in 1849 he sold his first American made piano. He introduced the first cast-iron frame, which allowed a piano to be strung with greater tension on the strings.  The bass strings cross above the treble strings so they could be longer and make a grander sound.

This song was written in response to the feeling I had  [have] about the precious souls lost in 9/11. You can feel things just going into this air and other times your can feel the struggles of the survivors.
