Weezer’s Impending Comeback
by Anthony Spitery

When you look back on the glorious emergence of the digital age in the 90′s, your memories can think back fondly on the likes of Nirvana, Green Day, Madonna, and TV shows like Law and Order, Friends, South Park, and Beavis and Butthead. Best of all, MTV had yet to throw its entertainment in the toilet!
But for those of you like me, who were just a baby at this glorious time, chances are you missed, though may have heard of all of these things. Well, another band that helped define the 90′s is one that exploded on the face of many tours. Weezer! These geeks spent countless hours after school rehearsing, and shaping a musical rock style based off of their rock god idols, Kiss. However, rather than dressing in large spiky demolition derby outfits and painting their faces and sticking their tongues out, they simply rocked their contemporary everyday looser swag. I’m talking about sweater vests, Buddy Holly glasses, and kakis. One of their biggest hits was a song about a sweater. I mean...don’t these guys just sound like heroes for going from nerds to rockstars?
As the years passed, and some lineup changes later, it didn't seem like this band was ever going to re-capture its glory that they did in the 90′s. Critics everywhere agreed that it didn’t seem like they had any upward mobility. It seemed like all hope was lost with this band. Like Marty McFly in Back to The Future, they were starting to fade away. (I know, thats an 80′s reference but you get the picture...ba dum tss)
However, about a few months ago one curious fan tweeted that they cover Totos ‘Africa’. And just like that, Weezer slammed in a welcome surprise, and a digital sensation. Better yet, they covered the music video with Weird Al Yanchovic, and released two singles for their impending black album, which is now expected to release this March.
Could this be this bands comeback?! I mean between their viral attention and release of a second promising single last week, I can safely assume that this album is going to be the most interesting move of their career. It’s style is very different. More pop than rock, but it has a backspin on what modern alternative is becoming. That is, if 2018 music actually had some 90′s genius behind it.
These days, the reigning style of music are hip-hop rap bops. Millennials are more busy jamming to Cardi B, and lassoing their legs and doing that BlocBoy JB dance...so I guess my question for you guys is...in the midst of a universal hip hop craze, does Weezer have a chance at pouring through?
What do guys think of Weezer’s latest? Or of the latest from JB?

Have You Heard of the Band Cake?

by Anthony Spitery
As the semester wraps up, and final exams loom around the corner, many of you may be looking for some chill upbeat music to relax to when doing your homework, studying, or getting in those final projects. Well my friends, have I got a band for you!
Cake is a 90′s alternative rock/indie band. Their jazz roots and killer guitar and vocal combinations make for a truly unique sound unlike no other. Their secret? A trumpet player! That’s right! Never before will you hear such catchy melodies that boast loudly on a level of geeky coolness that isn’t matched by anyone ever before or since.
I always thought of the trumpet to be a dorky instrument, but hearing these guys push boundaries and seemingly mix the blends of pop, rock and jazz...well I have to say they are truly a rare gem of pure personality and musicianship that spreads an elemental wave of fire beyond all logic and reason. It reminds me of something truly unique that only comes around once in a little while, but I feel like anyone can get hooked on this band’s style. I feel like only Red Hot Chilli Peppers comes close to their level of something that is groundbreaking and different.
If you’re looking for a 90′s band that captures the geeky charm of Weezer, the musicianship of The Doors, the catchy feel-good energy of Smash Mouth, Counting Crows, or Bare Naked Ladies, then this band is it! They also do AMAZING covers, with the covers of I Will Survive and The Guitar Man being my favorites. I never thought Gloriana Taylors I will survive would ever turn into a jam of mine, but these guys know how to rock it. See for yourself! Here’s my pics of 10 of my most favorite songs! A little slice of Cake...from me!

Steve Perry Returns To Music
by Nick Macellino
Steve Perry, the lead singer and front band for Journey broke his musical silence of 20 years, and has released a new album on October 5, 2018. Back in the day the band Journey sold over 48 million albums. Over the years Steve Perry said that he lost his love for music and Journey and Steve Perry went their separate ways. But, in 2017 Journey briefly reunited no stage at the rock n roll hall to be inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame.
As of right now Steve Perry is back with his new album called Traces. Steve gives credit to a woman that he met in 2011 named Kelly Nash and fell in love. Kelly Nash was battling breast cancer. Sadly in 2012 she passed. This album was a way for Steve to cope with the passing of Kelly. Before Kelly passed she wanted Steve to promise her that he wouldn’t go back into isolation.
Steve says that his new alums is full of different types of songs like loss, roll n roll and reunions. Steve’s new albums even hit the top ten on the billboard 100 chart. Hopefully Steve doesn’t stop here. A lot of his fans are hoping that he will stick with it and maybe hopefully join Journey again.

Greta Van Fleet Analysis
by Nick Marcellino

Greta Van fleet is a new rock band that surfaced into top charts in 2017, and they have blown up rapidly on radio, social media, T.V. etc. Most of their singles are on the Billboard top 100 charts and they have already made the top 10 in mainstream rock charts twice in the last year. Their concerts get sold out quickly, and their success is a raging fire re-igniting the rock scene across America. With all of this going on, the band hasn’t even released a full debut album yet. Greta Van Fleet has four band members in total. Josh and Jake who are twins, their younger brother Sam, and their friend Danny, who recently took the reigns as their percussionist in 2014. They grew up in the small town of town in Frankenmuth, MI.
The band claims to be heavily influenced by rock and roll legend super groups like Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Aerosmith, The Who and Led Zeppelin. All of their singles landed on a music producers’ desk in Michigan, and he gave them a deal right on the spot. Their label is Republic Records.
Greta Van Fleet has a very iconic sound, and is often compared to another rock band form the 70’s, Led Zeppelin. Some people don’t like Greta Van Fleet because of that reason. I personally like the band and all of their singles. It is good that there is a band out there that is performing and making music with more of rock and roll vid because there is not a lot of rock and roll in today’s popular music. Most people think Greta Van Fleet is the next Led Zeppelin. I don’t think so because all of their songs are original and this band is still at the early stages of their careers. Greta is a landmark of diverse originality in today’s times, and is truly a talent worthy of more recognition. Their work continues! Stay tuned for Cavalier Radio’s review of their new album, Anthem of the Peaceful Army which releases on October 19th.
Nick Marcellino’s new rock show will soon air on Cavalier Radio this month! Stay tuned for more details.

The Now Now- Gorillaz
A review by Alex Maiorana

The Gorillaz released an album in June of 2018 and since then I have been unable to stop listening. The album mixes pop beats with melancholy moods along with a particular synth that only the Gorillaz seem to achieve and makes for a great listen. The focus is isolation which can be both heard through the album and seen by the lack of featured artist who normally take up a large portion of the tracks. The album is the idealistic solo record from the lead singer of the cartoon band.
The album begins with Humility, which has a very summer-pop-synth feel with a constant bass line that doesn’t seem to end, that paired with guitarist George Benson’s skills makes for an interesting first track. The song itself seems to pull you in, but not enough to really sweep you off your feet, but enough to leave you wanting more. It feels like a traditional Gorillaz song with their own off brand type of pop.
Damon Albarn, the creator and lead singer of Gorillaz, Is a pretty politically driven person and in several of his songs seem to allude to the goings on in Britain, such as leaving the EU. The somber tones of his vocals mixed with space-synth and some bass rhythms in One Percent leave a bit of a bitter sweet taste in the ear, but being followed by Souk Eye settles the mood. The vocals again mixed with the familiar minor-synths and space pop sounds, backup vocals, and finger picking give a much different feel. The song is upbeat, but keeps its melancholy mood with phenomenal bass input and of course Albarn’s iconic vocals.
The album gives off summer vibes, but keeps its seemingly depressing streak and has a strange appeal that only Albarn could achieve. The record is defined by its pop-synth, the underlying bass, and of course the vocals which are more important thematically on this album than on some of their previous albums.
