Probably the best swedish movie ever made
So you liked Young Royals? Cool! Want some other Swedish LGBTQ+ content? Because I’ve got some for you:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fucking Åmål (1998), internationally titled “Show Me Love” is a wlw teen film way ahead of its time. It’s films like this that walked so shows like Young Royals could run.
Here’s the synopsis stolen from Google, because they sell it better than I could:
Teens Elin and Agnes are schoolmates. Elin is upbeat and popular, while Agnes is morose and friendless. And both girls are very frustrated with life. Elin dreams of fleeing their dull Swedish town. Agnes dreams of Elin. Though Agnes has never acted on her feelings, it's widely rumored she's a lesbian. But when Elin kisses Agnes on a cruel dare, it leads to an apology, a growing closeness between the girls and a plan to solve the problems of both.
As it happens, I found the entire film on YouTube with English subs. So if y’all wanna watch some more Swedish lgbtq content, and support wlw media, this is the film besties ❤️

I really liked the show but I also really really wish the money spended on the Hype House show would have gone to s&b instead if you know what I’m saying..

I see so many posts that are like, “I am just so worried about XYZ happening on the show. Because in the books ABC happens and based on the two interviews I’ve read, I’ve come the the conclusion that the showrunner and author who literally wrote the story I’m in love with don’t love the characters as much as we do. Idk, I just am worried the show won’t do it justice.”  You know what I’m worried about? I’m worried about fandom deciding what the show will or won’t be before the damn thing even airs.
We’re all here because we either loved the books or because the show looks intriguing. Just sit down for .5 seconds and try to enjoy the damn thing before writing a dissertation on why you might possibly in these specific circumstances hate it before you’ve seen it.

Agreed. I never really saw the characters as teenagers either (even though i understand the commentary on them all having to grow up too young). Also, if the choice was between having actors in their twenties playing teenagers and aging up the characters, I much prefer aging up the characters.
Just a thought/different POV about aging the characters up in the show, i guess (Most specifically the crows) :
I get it why some may be mad, afterall i like it when characters are on those teen years, since i'm in them too, and the humour and some struggles are very reminiscent of them.
However, at least from when i read... i never really bought the idea that all of them were that young, if that makes sense? Like, to me they were always set on the early-mid 20s. I never really bought that one or two years was enough for Kaz Brekker to change the whole gang he was a part of, as well as making his image as dangerous as it seems to everyone, for example.
And also, even though i think the exploration of all the traumas are done effortlessly in the novels, i also believe that aging them up opens new ways of exploring how trauma weaves itself on all parts of life, specially adulthood/new adult years, and that all could make up for a much more powerful message, and how trauma never goes away and shows up in many small things, yet you learn to deal with them, live with them and eventually not let them fully control you anymore, and how it can come back stronger depending on your situations, even though you think you have it past you, and much more.
Besides the fact that i, particularly, am fully on board for a story/timeline that experiments and goes away a bit from canon- it's more content, really. I already interpret the show as pretty much it's own thing, and we still have the novels anyways, so... yeah. And i don't think aging them up will destroy it all, as some are worried about, like, yes, teenage years are a part of their whole characterization, yet i feel like Bardugo and the writers now have more opportunities since they don't have to make them young anymore so it fits in the YA genre/market.
I don't know, just felt like getting that out. And if you disagree with me, i mean, you do you, i have no right to put this on your face forcefully, and you can think whatever you want, since opinions are a thing, heh? I just think we should give a chance to something new, even though the original will always be better, for some, which is also totally fine!

i have to say i find the way certain parts of six of crows/shadow and bone fandom talk about kaz and inej’s relationship incredibly… uh weird?
i’ve seen from book fans (especially on twitter) talk about how they’re going to lose it when show only fans start wanting them to kiss or touch and that is so strange to me because if these fans who have only seen the show watch it and enjoy kaz/inej’s dynamic, it means the show has done a good job with their relationship and people who only know them through the show also see their connection and want them to be together. what exactly is wrong with that? “show fans” aren’t aware nor do they have extensive knowledge of the traumas inej and kaz have gone through like book readers have so of course if they ship them in this first season their initial reaction will be wanting them to kiss/have some sort of physical intimacy. maybe give them a chance to get to know these characters and understand them before already actively gatekeeping people who have less information than you about these characters and if the show goes on for several seasons and they get those backstories and the full picture of what these characters have gone through and these “show fans” are still insensitive about it then of course feel free to call them out on it but as of now maybe chill????
i also find it strange how aggressive fans are with automatically thinking that when ANYONE even expresses any sort of interest in wanting to see kaz and inej kiss or touch suddenly it becomes about invalidating their traumas or erasing it. like, someone wanting them to eventually kiss or be physically intimate does not automatically mean they are ignoring or invalidating what these characters have gone through. obviously there have been people who have been insensitive about it and they absolutely need to be called out for it but for certain parts of fandom it seems like even just WANTING them to kiss somehow means you don’t respect their characters or their relationship. these characters in these books have expressed MULTIPLE TIMES about wanting that physical intimacy. they want to get to a point where they CAN be more physically intimate with each other. that’s canon. obviously it will take time and a lot of healing and when writing fics or talking about their relationship that needs to be taken into consideration but it’s never been about them not wanting to touch each other or have physical intimacy. that’s why the ending of crooked kingdom, them holding hands, is so beautiful because it felt like them (especially kaz) taking those first steps of healing and overcoming their traumas.
