I've been making some changes to my process that allow me to devote more time and energy into the underdrawing - always my favorite part anyways! I had a bit of an epiphany while preparing to pull a late night on New Year's Eve in order to get the latest Reign of Sin illustration out the door in December (spoiler alert: I did not!)... . It's going to take a while to finish this project. . This may seem like a "no shit" realization (39 paintings is a lot of paintings) but throughout the long death march that was 2019, I spent a lot of time stressing about how slowly the decks were coming together - rushing pieces that shouldn't have been rushed, neglecting my non-art life, and getting paralyzed when, predictably, my rushing/neglect system didn't result in cheerful productivity. . As soon as the realization hit me, I ripped up the almost-finished first draft of the painting that I'd been struggling with, went to bed early, and started over from scratch a few days later. Long story short: I've finally given the project permission to take as long as it takes. . I'm mentioning all this because I know a lot of the people following this project are artists, which is a calling that comes with a lot of self-flagellation and often forces our mental and physical wellbeing to the back burner; I wanted to publish a friendly reminder (to myself as well as to you) that better art comes out of well-rested and recently-fed artists than tired, hungry, stressed ones. . Take care of yourselves, everyone - and may 2020 be a better year for all of us than the last one!
