God, she couldn’t believe that this was her life sometimes. When she woke up to a little one’s foot kicking her in the ribs or Kyle’s forehead nestled in the crook of her neck, it felt like someone else’s life. It felt like some sort of dream, one she’d had in rehab, growing up- she wanted a family. Her own family was broken pieces of what could’ve been a family, and she always yearned for one to call her own. A person to call home. And Kyle was that person. Kyle was her saving grace as much as she’d been hers, and she loved him with her entire heart. Waking up to his smile and going to sleep with his arm wrapped around her waist, it felt like some sort of paradise. “I am! I’m gonna be three! That’s this many!” Sofia giggled, holding up two hands worth of fingers and Sam gently tucked all but three fingers down with a loving smile. Looking at Kyle with soft eyes, she leaned over and pecked his forehead before gathering Rosa in her arms and snuggling the little one. “I used to be so cool, you turned me into mush, now I love the cheesy date stuff, only with you,” She remarked fondly, standing with the younger baby in her arms while heading for the kitchen, Setting the baby in her high chair, she got out the food and handed Kyle the bottle, standing on tiptoes to kiss his cheek. “I love our family, so much. We have a good life going for us,”
They were his kids. Kyle had always wanted kids, obviously he had a soft spot for them and was good with them, but he never actually thought he would be able to have any. When he was in captivity he thought he’d never get out to have a life of his own, and after everything that had happened… He had problems with sex because it was triggering for him, so as much as he had previously hated himself for it, he thought he would never be able to have kids with Sam like he wanted. And sure, technically he and Sam weren’t the biological parents, but honestly Kyle forgot that a lot of the time- and 100% of the time it did not matter to him at all. They were his girls, and he loved them more than he could have ever imagined in the past. He was a father- and that idea alone showed just how significantly his life had changed since he met Sam. And so he always held them close, treated them right and did what he thought was best for them, wanting to be involved in their lives the way his parents never could be. Sofia announced what she’d done to help Sam and Kyle smiled proudly, planting a kiss onto the girl’s head, “Gosh, you’re really growing up now aren’t you?” he sighed happily, made even happier by the bright smile on the girl’s face. “A real date. I’m going to wine and dine you and romance you and all that cheesy date stuff. You deserve it.” he muttered lovingly, reaching up with his free hand to stroke her cheek with his thumb as he looked at her, moving to carefully remove Rosalie’s little fist from Sam’s hair, planting a kiss to the girl’s palm which made her giggle. And then as Sam and Sofia tugged at him to get up it was his turn to laugh as he rolled out of bed and scooped their oldest daughter up in his arms to swing her around, sending the girl into a fit of giggles. Taking Sam’s hand with each of them carrying one little girl, they made their way to the kitchen.

Her jaw tightened as her arms wrapped around him, his warmth the only thing anchoring her to reality before her anger got the better of her. Knowing that they’d be facing the people who’d hurt him, the people who put him through hell for so many years; it infuriated the girl. She’d always had a volatile temper, and before Kyle, before he’d changed her for the better, she’d been a downright bitch. Now she was a bitch for the sake of the people she loved, and when Kyle told her that he was anxious, her heart was pounding and she kissed him back before nodding, knowing how he would be. Knowing that it would just be another thing they worked through together, she didn’t mind. She would never mind being there for him. “I’m not going anywhere. I swear. I will be right here,” Sam promised, bringing his hands to her lips and kissing his knuckles.
Sam nearly walked into Kyle’s back when he stopped abruptly, but when she saw why he did, she immediately tensed and gripped his hand tightly. Moving beside him, her hand in his, the glare she sent towards the group of people could scorch the earth. “Do not talk to him,” Her voice was cold as steel, jaw flexing angrily as the group of people made comments about her. “I hope you all rot in hell where you deserve. Once you all go to jail, they’ll hear ‘bout why you’re there. What you did to minors, to kids- they’re gonna make you feel every single second of the pain you caused and I’ll sleep easy at night knowing that you’re getting what you’ve had coming to you for years,” The DA strode around the corner, grasping her arm and pulling her away before she could threaten them any further.
Of course he knew there was no way she’d let it go. She knew first hand what they’d done to him- she saw how they kept him sleep deprived and starving in a cage- she saw the scars and knew some of their stories. She’d been woken up by his more violent nightmares. “I love you too…” he muttered, not knowing what to do. But she wrapped him up in a hug tighter and more urgent than she had in a very long time and he knew that there was no way he could say no to her- even about this. He could hear an extreme anger in his voice all of a sudden and he quickly pulled out of her hug so that he could cup her cheeks in his hands, gently stroking his thumbs over her jaw so she’d relax, “It’s okay, I’m safe now… I have you. I-I guess I can’t stop you from testifying. But I just- just know that I’m going to be really stressed for a while about making sure you’re safe. Don’t- get annoyed.” he reached down to take her hand in his and squeezed it gently, reaching down to kiss her lips, “And don’t leave my side… Please. You were right- I need you. Badly. I-I’m terrified and I’m afraid I’ll vomit or pass out or something…” he whispered in a small voice.
And seeing them was harder than he could’ve ever imagined. The two had walked into the court-house and when he saw a small group of them, even guarded by police officers, Kyle froze like a deer in headlights, and when he made eye contact with one he grabbed Sam and shoved her behind him on instinct, “Copper?!” it was the shrill voice of one of the women he’d never be able to forget, “Y’all- It was Copper who turned us over.” Kyle just stood there frozen, the only muscles in his body working were the ones holding Sam behind him with all of his strength, “But Copper was always such a good boy- Why’d you gotta do that Copper we always had so much fun.” another, younger woman whined to the laughter of a few of the men in the group and Kyle was stark white by that point, gripping onto Sam for dear life, his worst nightmare coming to life, particularly when one of the men pointed out that Kyle was hiding a pretty little thing and that he ought to share since they always shared him. “We could show her some of our own hospitality. You know it well don’tcha Copper? Think she would like that? Might even let you have a swing at her kiddo…” Kyle just wanted to run or vomit or both but his feet were glued to the ground as he shook violently in terror.

She was shaking so hard as he held her that he was worried about her physical health as well as her mental health and he knew he needed to get her out of this alley. She wouldn’t say what had happened to her, but Cam knew that he couldn’t push her- not now. So he nodded at her request and carried her to the car, setting her down in the passenger seat before sitting up in the drivers seat and riving back to her place, carrying her out without a word besides the little murmuring of “I’ve got you” and “you’re safe now…” over and over, reassuring himself as much as he was her. The first thing he did was set her down on her bed, quickly moving to get the first aid kit and working to properly clean her cut, “Josie…” he whispered in a soft voice, “I know you don’t want to talk about it, but I need to report what happened to the police okay? I need you to at least tell me in general what he did and what he looked like if you saw him okay? We need to make sure he pays for what he did to you.” his words were harsh but his voice was soft and careful as he tended to her wound and gently caressed her face.
All she wanted to do was be home and lock all of the doors, she just craved safety and she knew that after what had just happened that she wouldn’t feel safe for a very long time. Even with Cam holding her, she still felt a chill running down her spine, as if someone could easily snatch her from his grasp and the way she clung to him left little resemblance to the proud, cocky woman that he had known. She wasn’t sure if that woman would ever come back. When he mentions reporting it, she shook her head vehemently, a lump in her throat making it hard to talk. “C-Can’t.H-He said he’d find everyone that I love, I can’t tell anyone,” She whispered, feeling her stomach churning as her tremblnig hands reached out to slip into his large hands, finding solacein the brief touch.

“That’s a no, I’ve never dated anyone I’ve worked with before,” Wren chuckled, her shoulders hitching in an innocent shrug. But she wanted to now. This connection they had was unlike any other she’d ever had, that had to mean something. That had to mean that after everything that she’d been through, all the sleepless nights worrying if her experiences would ruin her chance at being happy one day- that this was some higher power allowing her to be happy for awhile. “Let’s...let’s try it out and see how it goes. No one has to know right now. Then we can figure things out as we go,” Her lips curved into a smile and she took his hand, squeezing gently. “After today, I-I need this type of conversation, it’s over and done with, I need to get my mind off of it anyways and you happen to be the perfect person to do that with,” She admitted, pressing her lips to his cheek in one swift moment of impulse before settling beside him, wiping her fingers on a napkin and setting her plate down.
He chuckled and rolled his eyes, “Yes I want to date you. Is that a no to knowing the rules? Because I really have no idea the way around this kind of thing…” he grumbled. “Do you think we could try it out and see how it goes being… more than partners? And then if it goes well for a while and we want to- make it into something, then we’ll ask Cap? Or… Would it be better to ask first? Y’know before you fall madly in love with me and it’s too late to turn back?” he teased, giving her hand a little squeeze with a smirk on his lips. “I know this probably isn’t an appropriate conversation after a day like today, let me know if you want me to shut up. Or I can talk about how pretty and smart and brave you are. And all the awesome dates I’d take you on. Either way. Up to you.” he smiled again, now that he’d told her how he felt and knew she felt the same way he felt like the world was lifted off his shoulders.

When she heard a gunshot ring out, she just prayed that it hit her and not Alec. Bu she felt no pain, and looking down, she didn’t see any blood staining her clothing. Then she turned to look at Alec and her heart dropped into her stomach. Quickly grabbing a dish towel that was hanging near the stove, she grit her teeth and whispered that it would hurt before pressing the cloth against the gunshot wound to stop the bleeding. She could see where the bullet was lodged in the wall, it had just grazed him, which was a small miracle. But then Wren realized; it hadn’t fully hit Alec because it was meant for her. The realization made her knees wobbly and she sucked in a deep breath, trying her best to stay upright although her stomach had a shooting pain in it. Immediately her hand went to her stomach, and she anchored her eyes on Alec’s, nodding when he asked about the cops. Their daughter kept crying & once she secured that Alec had the gun and the man had little choice but to freeze, she went back into the baby’s room and cradled her to her chest; blonde curls tickling her cheek as she cried silently. A few minutes later, the cops burst through the door and immediately grabbed the man, while another took the gun from Alec. Wren immediately ran to Alec, telling them that he wasn’t the shooter, that he was hurt and needed to go to the hospital. All of this came out between sobs but the police officers nodded, calling on their radio for an ambulance.
And from that moment on he let Wren do the talking. There was nothing he could say to make the man change his mind, but Wren had an effect on him that was slowly working and as long as she stayed behind him, shielded by his body just in case things went south- he knew it was best if she was the one talking. And he was right because soon she was pressing her fingertips into his shoulder blades and he knew exactly what she meant, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce. She dug her nails into his arm and he took the cue without a moment’s hesitation. She ran to the right and he immediately reached to grab the gun from the man, but was a little too slow. A gunshot went off and there was a sharp pain in Alec’s arm that he barely registered as he grabbed the gun from the man and flipped it around to point it right between his eyes. Alec’s arm was bleeding heavily, but he hardly registered the pain, adrenaline rushing, “Wren are you okay?” he asked, not wanting to take his eyes off the man. The sound of the gunshot had apparently woken up their daughter who started shouting mama and dada in between screams and cries and the sound broke Alec’s heart. “Kill me then! Do it!” the man shouted, And Alec’s heart pounded thinking about the stress he’d put Wren through- how he’d pointed a gun at his pregnant wife and he almost pulled the trigger. He could’ve. But he took deep breaths and shook his head, thinking about Wren, “I don’t need your blood on my hands…” he muttered, starting to feel the blood loss, “Wren, you called the cops right?” he asked, eyes trained on the older man.

“I witnessed what they did to you, I saw how you were kept- my testimony could put them away, or at least help. I love you, but this is my choice. I’m going to put them away for what they did to you,” Sam said, her jaw tight as she held onto his hands. When the lawyer had called them and told them that they’d rounded up the circuit of slave rings in the area, Kyle had looked vaguely scared and ill and it killed Sam. He’d worked so hard to begin healing from what he’d went through, and now all of this was just going to rehash all of the trauma he faced. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she pulled him down to her height; hugging him tighter than she had in a very long time. There was a sense of urgency, the way she held onto him. “We’re going to take them down. And then they’re going to jail. I’m not going to sit on the side and hope that this all works. If my testimony helps put them away, I’m going to testify. I need them to pay for what they did to you, the way they treated you-”Her teeth were gritted, her voice low and gravelly as she took a deep breath.
“Sam…” he muttered in a low, warning tone. “You’ve already done so much for me- these people- there are more of them, and if they know who you are…” he shook his head, “I know you want to help but I can’t risk that. I’d never risk your safety, you know that…” his voice was soft but firm at the same time because he really couldn’t put her in danger like that, even though he knew she’d fight him on that. He also knew that she was right- seeing the people that had held him captive and put him trough hell would be triggering, and there was no way for him to prepare for that and he had no idea how it would effect him. Even now his hear was beating so hard in his chest he thought he would pass out. Honestly he was terrified, and he could tell Sam was too, and he didn’t ever want to put her in a position where she had to be scared. “I have to do this. For all the people that died under their hands and so no one else ever has to go what I went through… But- if I do end up taking them down by some miracle and they know that I love you?… They can come after me all they want but you know I can’t put you in danger like that. I’d never let them hurt you. They’re cruel beyond anything you can image Sam, thinking of them even knowing you exist makes me… Terrified.”

When he picked up, her eyes closed at the sound of his voice, relief washing over her in a wave. She could barely move, she hurt everywhere, and he continued to talk to her while he drove; promising her that he was on his way. She was terrified that the man who’d hurt her would come back, so she tried to sink back into the shadows, her skin scraping against the brick building. Hearing his voice and seeing him coming towards her, her face crumbled and she buried her head in his shoulder; her petite body trembling. “I-I,” She shook her head, unable to vocalize the abuse she’d faced. The man’s warning still rang in her head; he would come after the people she cared for most, and the person at the top of that list was the man whose arms were around her. Her body sagged against him, a desperate attempt to stop trembling from the cold and from the trauma. “Need to get home, p-please take me home,” She managed, her teeth gritted as he tried to clean the cut on her head.
The moment he got her call and heard the way her voice sounded so broken he knew something was beyond wrong- she never sounded like that. So he reassured her and stayed on the line with her until he pulled up in the alleyway and quickly jumped out of his car, seeing her huddled on the ground made his heart shatter in his chest, feeling the pieces tear him apart. But he sucked it up and ran to her, falling to his knees beside her, “Josie… I’ve got you… I won’t let you go…” he whispered, scooping her up in his arms and holding her close, clenching his jaw tight, “Wh-what happened?” he asked quietly, pulling away just enough to look at her and brush some hair out of her eyes, seeing the cut there and tearing off a part of his shirt in an attempt to clean it and stop more blood. “You’re gonna be okay, I’ve got you.” he repeated in a shaky breath, knowing that he would never let her walk home like this again if he could help it, not even knowing the worse of what had happened yet.

Wren wasn’t normally an open person, even to people that had known her for years. But Alec, there was a connection there that made her more comfortable and able to share things. It was like, without saying a word, he could tell that something had happened to her and he wasn’t going to force it out of her. But he was there, and that was something. In all honesty, that was everything. She could feel a mixture of emotions coming from the man sitting beside her; anger, hurt, and something else she couldn’t figure out. “That means a lot to me. And I know people say that but seriously, thank you,” She wasn’t one for flowery words, not because she wasn’t emotional, but because putting her emotions into words was so damn hard when someone meant a lot to her. Alec already meant a lot to her, and not just because he was her partner. There was something else, the something else that he was talking about when he asked about rules. The tension between them was crackling enough that it was impossible not to notice it. She wasn’t sure what the rules were in the department, she knew of a cop in Chicago who began dating her partner and neither of them had gotten in trouble, but here it might be different. She didn’t know. And in that moment, with him, she was having a very hard time trying to care about any rules. His crooked grin reminded her of in grade school, when everything was simpler and she had a lot less broken edges. “You wanna date me huh?” She couldn’t help but smirk a little, a shy laugh escaping her a moment later. His eyes were kind as they were fixed on her, she could very nearly sink into them.
The way she immediately looked down and her knuckles grasped her plate and turned white- he knew he’d struck a chord. And he knew what that meant. The thought made Alec want to punch something and shout and comfort her all at the same time but he knew that wasn’t an option so he’d go with the last of the three. But those two same words left her lips and he frowned, knowing that she wasn’t ready to talk yet. And that was okay- it had to be okay because Alec wasn’t about to push her to talk about it if she wasn’t ready. He just wanted her to know that he understood and why he cared so much that she never had to go through that again, and he was sure now that he’d gotten his point across even if she still didn’t have the same opinion. “I trust you too, and I swear, you won’t regret trusting me, I won’t let you down. I’d never let anyone hurt you.” he promised with a little nod. When she smiled the air lightened significantly and he could feel her bright blue eyes, clouded a little by the days events, but still a striking blue all the same, flickering over his features as she took him in. “I guess we are.” he sighed, but it was happy, glad to have confirmation that she at least felt the same things that he did. “Do you know what the rules are around… This kind of thing? Because at a more appropriate time I’d like to ask you out on a date… But I’m not really sure if that’s violating some kind of work code.” even though it wasn’t funny, admitting that he wanted to ask her out made him smile cheekily like a kid with a crush.

“You’re a changed man and you’re allowed to have a family. My son will never have a family, you took the only family I had,” The man bellowed, although Wren saw there were tears in his eyes as he stood there holding a gun on them. Wren knew of Alec’s past, and while she knew that things he had done were nearly impossible to forget, she made the decision a long time ago to forgive him and leave those things in his past. But this man hadn’t made that decision, and he stood there, looking the man who’d killed his son in the eyes and Wren knew that he thought he was doing the right thing. In his mind, this was justice. “Shooting us will not bring him back,” Was all Wren said, and the man’s stead hold on the gun faltered. When Alec pulled her behind him slowly, her fingertips pressed into his shoulder blades, trying to get him to notice the man’s anger morphing into grief. “I am so s-sorry that you lost your son. But this w-won’t bring him back. All this will do is cause you more hurt, it won’t fix anything,” The man’s eyes were filling with tears, the scowl still on his face, and Wren noticed his gaze wavering enough to know that now was when Alec had to act. Digging her nails into his left arm to indicate to go for the gun, she made a sharp move to the right knowing- or praying- it would distract the man for the split second they needed.
She wouldn’t get behind him and Alec was about to physically pick her up and move her behind him- she had no idea who she was dealing with. Alec had killed the man’s son. It wasn’t for no reason of course- his son was a monster, but that didn’t make a difference when he was family. It always hurt regardless of how awful the person was when Alec was forced to think about the fact that the men he’d killed were someone’s sons or brothers or husbands or even fathers. He’d been a horrible awful person before he’d met Wren and she knew that- but sometimes he knew she blocked out the worse parts like this. And then he yelled that Alec had killed his son and he knew that if their daughter made a single noise in the next room over… He didn’t even want to imagine. But as he moved to pick up Wren and put her behind him, she started speaking. And then she said she was having a baby and Alec’s heart nearly stopped in his chest, reassuring himself that she was just saying that to make the shooter empathize but then… There were pictures and he he was suddenly terrified because there was no way in hell she was going to stand in front of him like that. She was carrying their child. “I know what I did.” he finally found his voice and spoke up, pretending that he knew all along that Wren was pregnant but not making eye contact with her because he knew it would give them away, “I know it was wrong, but I’ve changed. Wren- she changed me and made me better. I’m going to have a family. I’m going to therapy now for anger, I’m out of… That business. I’m trying to be better.” it was at that point that he picked up Wren and moved her behind him, knowing she wouldn’t do it on her own, “I know I killed your son and that’s unforgivable and I’ll spend my entire life with that pain and guilt and regret, but please don’t make my child grow up without a father.” he pleaded, holding Wren behind him even as she tried to step in front again. There was no way in hell he was letting her put herself of their child in danger like that.

“Get behind me.”
Both Wren and Alec were no stranger to pain. Alec had lived through ten peoples’ worth of pain, and Wren’s father had exposed her to cruelty no one should have to face from family. But the both of them together seemed to be a target, and even now, her heart was in her chest as she faced down a gunman with his gun pointed directly at Alec. Someone else from his past had caught up with them, and when Alec demanded she get behind him, she stood in front of him, ice in her veins and fire in her blue eyes. Their daughter was asleep in the next room, Wren just prayed she made no noise. “Please, you can’t do this. You can’t-” “Tell me why not! He killed my son!” Eyes closing, Wren tried to ground herself, to not yell or show fear. “My name is Wren. I don’t know you, we’ve never met. I’m twenty. I grew up around here, until my mom left us. Then it was just m-my dad. His name is Lucas. I want to be a detective, I-I’m going to go to the police academy. I have no sisters or brothers, I h-have a cousin, Sam. I’m a person, please, d-don’t do this, I’m going to have a baby,” She hadn’t told Alec that she was expecting another, but it was blurted out and the look on the older man’s face shifted to something and she continued. “S-See?” Digging in her bag that was still slung on her shoulder, she pulled out a sonogram picture, feeling like she’d be sick. While she’d gotten the photo, she’d called 911 and left the speaker on her phone as she talked. “If you shoot me, y-you’ll take two lives. It’ll follow you for the rest of your life. Please, I-I am sorry that you lost your family. But p-please don’t take mine,” Tears were streaming down her cheeks, her entire body tense.

“I’ve got you,”
Josie didn’t like feeling helpless. She liked being invincible, she liked knowing that she was a women of authority. When she lived on the street, she was quick and was constantly on her guard. You had to be, otherwise you wouldn’t last. When you slept in your car, you knew to park somewhere safe but discrete. You knew where gang territories were, you knew the dealers to avoid and the ones that were safe. But living in a loft and being an editor for a huge magazine had resulted in Josie letting her guard down and while walking home from a bar one night, a man grabbed her from behind and dragged her into an alley. Holding a knife to her throat, he warned her that he knew exactly who she was and if she screamed or told anyone, he’d find the people she loved and do worse to them. So she laid there, frozen, silent tears rolling down her cheeks as he took advantage of her and when he had finished, he casually walked out of the alley and into the crowds walking around. Reaching into her pocket, hands trembling, the brunette felt a cut on her head bleeding down her forehead as she hastily dialed the first number in her contacts. “Cam, I-I need you to come pick me up,” She managed, her voice cracking as she tried not to be sick.

“I wont let them hurt you.”
“You’re crazy if you think I’m letting you face them on your own,” Sam said with arms crossed, mostly to hide how her hands were shaking. They were outside the courthouse, going to testify against the people that held Kyle captive for so long, and the ADA had warned them that seeing his captors again might trigger PTSD symptoms in Kyle. Sam had known that, she was ready to be there for him, and she knew all the signs; she could recognize if he was getting bad. What she hadn’t expected was for her own palms to be sweating and her heart to be pounding a hundred miles an hour. She was going to testify, and the ADA warned that anything in her past that could be used against her credibility, they had to know. So she had told them about the drugs, about rehab, everything. Now, they were about to go fight for the justice Kyle deserved, and she had never been more scared. Her father was a lawyer, she’d grown up seeing how the legal system failed innocent victims.
