rewatching one of my favorite BAM edits. in it, the last couple beats of the loop depict them all dying, and it's really got me thinking about the beauty of the life series' balance between the themes of teamwork and the themes of mortality.

like watching this edit, seeing all the fanart that depicts them as the happy, cheeky little group they were, and having it flash their deaths sets such a feeling of melancholy. "look at how much fun they had together. look at the relationship they managed to form with one another. look at their hope for being the winners! too bad they're all dead"

it's such a wild (pun intended) emotion that the life series (and, by extension, the fanartist of the life series) really masters, especially once a season is over and everybody has the full picture in mind.

the life series as a whole, in my opinion, does a great job at retroactively asking the question, "is everything we do in vain?" are all those connections we form truly meaningful? are all those things we create truly worth the time? and what really makes the series so flavorful when it comes to contemplating this kind of question is the various types of answers it elicits. for some, such as the bamboozlers in wild life or the southlanders and fairy fort in last life, the answer is yes; those bonds are worth the time, regardless of the eventual ends each member of the factions will meet. for others, specially and especially such as martyn in limited life (as well as joel's care for structures and "continuity" in wild life), those things don't actually matter. the series has such a diverse response when it comes to the debate and i find that so cool. a little nugget of the players' psyche on if the friends they meet truly make a difference, or if they're all just another means to the lonesome end.
