They were never supposed to work together. It was physically- no, morally impossible for them to even be in the same room together. So when Near needs leads for his case and Mello shows up, they expected the fights, the disagreements, the mistrust. But neither expected that this reluctant partnership would begin to blur the line between their rivalry and something reckless they were both trying to run from.
