The Art of Getting By
“We live alone, we die alone; everything else is just an illusion”
George Zinavoy, a senior high school student, is having an existential crisis. A teenager who’s having difficulty in giving a single damn to anything and to anyone, including homework, ergo, he just doesn’t take time to do them. But we all know that that type of attitude just wouldn’t cut it, and so, day by day, with no work done at all, George hurts his chance of graduating.
However, this type of attitude did catch the eye of Sally Howe, a fellow senior student. Although, the two are complete opposite, Sally being a bit eccentric for the likes of George who spends most of his time doodling, the two immediately click and became friends.
George, having a knack for arts, is having difficulty in expressing himself. Even though he would like to grab a brush and paint, he just doesn’t know what to paint or he just haven’t found what he wants to paint.
Being forced by the principal of his highchool to “volunteer” in becoming a liaison for the upcoming career fair, George meets Daniel, a frustrated artist, and has become somewhat of his mentor so to speak.
Over the course of weeks, George fell in love with Sally, but with an unfortunate turn of events, George dismisses his feelings alongside dismissing Sally altogether.
A wave of misfortunes has George stomped. Learning that his family is in debt and having his step father losing his job resulting into a divorce between his mother and coming to terms that they have to sell their house not to mention, he has to make up a year’s homework to graduate… and, oh yes, after gaining the confidence to finally kiss Sally and declare his undying love, he got slapped in the face with the fact that Sally began dating his friend Daniel, the last person he expected to.
Focusing his energy on finishing the activities he had missed—all of them, his art teacher gave him just one task, to paint whatever he wants as long as it comes from his heart.
Sally then asked George to meet one last time, telling him that she doesn’t want to go with her mother to Texas and so she’s going with Daniel in his Europe trip and she just wants to say goodbye but wants to say that she likes him too. It’s hard to explain…
But, you must have already figured it out, George manages to graduate, and the painting? He just painted Sally‘s face, I guess it depicts his longing for the girl and how she manages to give meaning to his life or whatever. And Sally stayed. So it all worked out for George. Yay George!.

QUESTIONS:
1. What life lessons can be learned from the movie?
- We all have that moment when we question the meaning of life, why are we here, what are we really meant to do. Do we just gain consciousness one morning and do what society wants us to do and just go to school, get a job, pay rent and then die. It truly is a tedious process. But instead of just focusing on the fact that our destination ultimately is to the grave, we should pay attention on how to spend our time living, you only do live once, make the best of it. George somewhat made that clear in the movie.
2. What part of the story told by the movie was the most powerful? Why?
- By the end, when George was bombarded by homework, George almost gave up but seeing the sight of his situation, his mother being debt, the divorce, the fact that he let his fear ruin his relationship with the girl he loves, Sally, he gains the balls to actually care for once and work.
- This shows that we can do it, it may not seem like it but if we just put our minds to it, we can do it and it does matter.
Tumblr media
3. Who was your favorite character in the movie and why?
- George Zinavoy has the strongest character development amongst all of them, do I find him annoying at times?, probably so, but the way the character deals with the situation is realistic, and it’s that type of realism that makes the viewer empathize with them alongside wanting to punch him in the face for being too dense.
Tumblr media
We all do George, we all do...
4. Did anything that happened in the movie remind you of something that has occurred in your own life or with others?
- I do know a person who has the same views as George. We aren’t close so I have no idea what that dude is up to right now, but best luck to him.
Tumblr media
(I’m a fan of Rick and Morty, what can i say... But I’m not one of those crazy ass fanboys... or am i?)
Tumblr media
5. If you had the chance to ask a character in this movie a question, what would it be?
- To Dustin the Artist, can you explain to me what art is? Since you know, you’re an artist and everything...
Tumblr media
I am not trying to be edgy or anything, i just can’t seem to wrap my head around the fact that this was worth millions, I mean i get it, it has some deeper meaning or what, I just need someone to point to me what that is exactly...

Review:
I am not much of a fan for a chick flick movie and this movie didn’t make me turn into one. Though it is bearable, a bit boring here and there, predictable most of the times, have a bit of a cringe moment once in a while, the movie is a solid 6 out of 10.

Short term 12
Short Term 12 is the name of a residential treatment facility set to help kids who are at need of help. There are kids there who suffer from traumatizing experiences of domestic violence, kids who have depression, kids who commit self-mutilation, kids who underwent substance abuse, kids who have a story.
The supervisor of the home is a woman named Grace, she is in charge of keeping an eye on the children until they are free to go, giving advices that she herself doesn’t take. Alongside her are her coworkers set to help manage the children. Including her long-term partner Mason, a scruffy looking dude who apparently sharted his pants years ago that made him an infamous personality in the home.
Before continuing, I would like you to add in your vocabulary the word sharted; you know those times when you really have to release gas but one thing led to another and you are now standing with shit dripping down your leg, you then, my dear reader, had just sharted. You are welcome.

(Rest in Peace Mr. Philip Seymour Hoffman)
Going back:
A new kid has arrived at the residence, an estranged teenager named Jayden. A girl who made it clear on the first day that she’s not there to build any relationship whatsoever and is not planning to stay any longer, appearing absolutely disconnected and having a bit of an attitude, Grace seems to have to work harder to get through the girl, but she has a problem of her own.
For the second time around, Grace got pregnant. Having a hard time to confess to her partner Mason about the pregnancy, she finally had the courage to do so, and to her surprise, it resulted to an overjoyed reaction from the boyfriend. And so, Grace left out a minor detail about scheduling an appointment for an abortion.
Still having some difficulty to connect with Jayden, Grace is busy in planning the departure party of a residential kid named Marcus who has been in the home for more over than 2 years and struggling with the fact the he’s leaving, oddly so, the kid’s final request is for his head to be shaved, which to his surprise, looked pretty decent.
After a while, Grace and Jayden bonded together, it seems that they found an unspoken common ground, something that is not as pleasant as you would think.
On Jayden’s birthday, her father bailed and did not pick her up from the home which caused an outburst and a violent reaction from the girl towards the staff.  After an attempt from Grace to calm the girl down, she has finally succeeded.  Jayden then decided to share a fairly disturbing story she has been working on and made Grace suspect that this was the only way for Jayden to say that she has been hurting and it is caused by none other than her own father.
During a celebration at Mason’s foster parents’ house, he had proposed to Grace which willingly said yes. In hindsight, it couldn’t be a more picture perfect moment for Grace, carrying the child for the man he loves and being a bride to be, but it couldn’t be any further from that.
Moments later, Grace found out that her father will be released after spending years in jail. Grace who finds it difficult to open emotionally fails to open up to his now fiancé, which is something that Mason have been bothered about since they began dating.
And with an unfortunate turn of events, Marcus’ fish had died which had triggered him to commit suicide, maybe the stress of his situation has been building up day by day and the death of his fish was just too much to handle.
Not to mention, the foster care had decided to bring Jayden back in the care of his father which made Grace furious for she knows in her that her father is abusing his own daughter and Jayden is not safe there, but it seemed that her boss is indifferent from the situation for no confession from Jayden have been made.
While the staff is waiting as Marcus is being treated, Mason tries to get in to the head of his fiancé but Grace simply bursts and in the moment tells him that she no longer wants to marry him and that she was planning to get the child aborted, ouch, and that made it clear that a time to be alone is needed.
Overrun by emotions, Grace rode her bicycle to Jayden’s house and planned to ‘bash the dude in the head with a baseball bat’. But Jayden was there at the right moment before any irrational decision was made.
There, Grace opened up and shared that she too was abused physically, emotionally and sexually by her own father to the extent that he even got her pregnant, and that that was her first abortion.
Grace just felt that she needed to save Jayden.
The two then proceeded to release all their hidden anger in bashing Jayden’s father’s car bits by bits.
Then, Jayden finally decided to confess about her abusive father, Grace then apologized to her fiancé and said that she did not meant any of that.
Grace alongside Mason is seen on an ultrasound appointment, it’s safe to say, they worked out.
And oh yeah, Marcus? He’s doing pretty well himself.

QUESTIONS:
1. What life lessons can be learned from the movie?
- You are not alone. Even if you feel that your feelings are just burden and no one out there will be kind enough to care, you are wrong, because there are, there are people out there who are just waiting for you to open up, people who are ready to be your crying shoulder, but they need you to decide for yourself if you’ll keep it bottle it up inside or let them in. They can’t help you if you won’t help yourself.
Tumblr media
2. What part of the story told by the movie was the most powerful? Why?
- The moment when Grace apologized to Mason and Mason gestured to Grace to just lie besides him and they laid there silent. That silence connotes understanding. Despite the harsh words from Grace, Mason understood. This maybe the moment Grace realized that here is someone who actually cares, what is she so afraid of?
Tumblr media
3. Who was your favorite character in the movie and why?
- Mason the boyfriend and the co-worker. This dude has the longest patience I have ever seen in anyone. He depicts , as corny as it sounds, true love. And, his stories are pretty interesting.
Tumblr media
4. Did anything that happened in the movie remind you of something that has occurred in your own life or with others?
- I have heard rumors going around where i live about this guy molesting a 5-year old girl, but i never really look into it. If that is true, the guy is just…
Tumblr media
5. If you had the chance to ask a character in this movie a question, what would it be?
- To Mason, what does sharting yourself feels? I am very curious.
Tumblr media
Review :
The movie is absolutely amazing. It gives you another perspective in life, it makes you empathize to each and every character;  if you were in there situation, what would you do. It ignites your sense of curiosity, what happened? What will happen? What is happening?… it felt real which makes the movie a 9 out of 10.

Whiplash
Who knew drums could be this epic?
This is a story about an artist’s obsession on perfecting his craft, the sacrifices he made, the road to his slow madness, and the extreme means he did to do so.
Andrew Neiman, a college student who has been given the opportunity to study at one of the most acclaimed music university in the country, Shaffer Conservatory in New York City,  has his eyes set on the goal of being the best that he can on being a jazz drummer.
While practicing one day, Terrence Fletcher, one of the best band conductor at the university, caught a glimpse on Neiman and saw a tiny bit of potential on the young drummer, giving him a piece of advice on what he would be looking for at a new musician, Neiman immediately practices on perfecting his drumming.
On a surprise visit during a band rehearsal, Fletcher had made the students play for him, unimpressed, he picked no one except for the one person who had the advantage to perfect exactly what Fletcher was looking for, Andrew Neiman.
This was the turning point for Andrew, the moment he realized his desire for greatness.
Ecstatic and feeling on cloud nine, Andrew had asked the girl he had a crush on for a while now, and lucky for him, the girl said yes.
Being chosen to be on the team and also having an upcoming date with the girl he likes, it seemed going pretty well for our young drummer, but what comes up must always go down.
During his first rehearsal with Fletcher’s band, he had witnessed that the instructor was no joke, he is serious in every way, and the students there have every reason to be afraid of him, witnessing him to cut out a trombone player for not knowing if he was in tune or not, Neiman was nervous for his turn to play the drums was next.
While trying to memorize the counting, Fletcher gave Neiman a small talk, telling him to relax, giving him a false sense of comfort but Neiman took the bait.
During his turn, this was the time Neiman realizes that he was fooled by, embarrassing him in front of the band and physically threating and hitting him, Neiman shed a tear, all because he couldn’t get into Fletcher’s tempo.
But instead of giving up, Neiman pushed himself to please Fletcher.
On a jazz competition, Neiman was asked by the core drummer of the band, Carl, to hold his folder containing the music sheet, but in an unfortunate event, he lost it, well, unfortunate for Carl because Neiman successfully played the part and was promoted as the new core drummer.
At a family gathering, it looks like none of his family members truly appreciate the beauty of jazz and only cares for sports, which drove Neiman infuriated and realizing his true fear, and that is the fear of mediocrity.
To avoid being too complacent, Fletcher proposes a threat to Neiman of being replaced by his former core drummer at a lower-class band, Ryan Connoly, something Neiman absolutely abhor. Telling Fletcher that he is far better than Ryan and can play the part. Fletcher responded by saying that Neiman needs to  earn the part.
This is the beginning of Andrew’s self-destruction. Breaking up with his girlfriend for he thinks that she would just hold him back, destroying his relationship with his family and pushing himself to the limits to the point of bruising. He slowly loses his love for music and just focuses on pleasing his abusive conductor, Fletcher.
Because of his obsession for approval, Andrew had been hit by a car, forcing him to stop playing.
It is sad to think that a car crash is Andrew’s only awakening. A realization had dawn on him after hearing that a student who was also tormented by Fletcher had committed suicide; this could no longer continue, Andrew agreed to file a case if only it is private.
Having the time to think and to really digest what happened, Fletcher and Neiman had met once again. Fletcher justifying himself by saying that anybody could just wave their hand and keep everyone in tempo, he just wanted to find his Charlie Parker.
Charlie Parker is a legendary drummer who had been thrown a cymbal at by Jo Jones, his mentor, almost decapitating the young man but instead of giving up, he happened to become one of the best.
This is the story that inspired Fletcher, a story he thinks justifies the means of his teaching.
After the encounter, Fletcher invited Neiman to play for him for the upcoming Jazz Festival, to which Neiman agreed.
It seems that Neiman once again is falling for Fletcher’s trick, and he did.
Moments before the band played, Fletcher reveals that he knew all along that Neiman played a huge role for his dismissal at the university and so this was all a plot for revenge to embarrass Neiman.
Shocked, Andrew failed to play and was completely humiliated. He went off stage and was comforted by his father, but something in him ignited, he went back to the stage with a vengeance.
Completely caught off guard, Fletcher did not anticipated the sudden arrival of Neiman, it seems like Andrew no longer plays for Fletcher, he is now playing for himself.
One of the most epic 15 minute ending scenario in any movie has been made.

A Witty Title That Shows How Creative I Am
blog 1
Tumblr media
Why is introducing yourself so freaking awkward?
I mean I know the basics, you start out with your name, then follow it up with your age, then stating your birthday is optional, you can tell where you live which I will not do by the way, if you want to get a bit personal you can say your likes and dislikes.
So let’s do this, slambook style:
Name: Hazel Anne V. Paguirigan
Birthday: August 7, 1999. I am a Leo, which apparently makes me generous with money, which is ironic because I basically have none.
Likes: I like milk.
Dislikes: I don’t like not drinking milk. …
Tumblr media
Get ready for just a series of whatever I think of, this can be a bit exhausting and you might get bored to death but, at least you’ll learn a little more about me which I doubt you’ll actually care. But what the hell, I need to hit five hundred words.
Did you know that chickens do not urinate? If this is your first time hearing about this piece of information, I am guessing your mind is being blown right now, I know mine did.
Speaking of urinating, I had a classmate once named Prince who pissed his pants in the second grade. I bet he wished he were a chicken back then.
This reminds me of one of the acclaimed artist named Prince, you know the one who wrote purple rain , no biggie, it’s just one of the best songs ever, and how much I got exited finding out that he had a duet with my all-time favorite musician Amy Winehouse. Totally recommend. May their soul rest in peace.
Winehouse, for some weird reason I think of Netherlands which makes me think of Neverland, which then makes me think of Peter Pan, and then there it goes, I just end up picturing  Spiderman, because you know, Peter Parker.
Parker, I was in a mall once and then I saw this pen with a brand name Parker that costs over a thousand pesos, how can a pen cost thousands?! Is the ink made out of some exotic octopus ink or something?
That reminds me, I do not care what anybody says, Ringo Starr’s Octopus Garden is the jam. It’s a great addition to Abbey Road. Anyone who says otherwise is just, I don’t know, an octopus hater.
I have a funny story; I was in a road once, and I almost got hit by a tricycle. Okay, not that funny of a story as I thought.
Speaking of getting hit, have you watched Steven Spielberg’s Duel? You know, that movie about this guy getting tormented by a truck and all hell breaks loose, this soft spoken guy must gather all his might to survive and it suddenly became a game of catch me if you can.
Oh, and his other movie Catch Me If You Can, starring none other than Leonardo DiCaprio and one of my all-time favorite actor Tom Hanks, that movie was a gem. Speaking of movies, I love movies, so I’m really pumped up to make a movie review.
And when I get really excited, I really need to use the bathroom, so have a nice life.
I HAVE TO PEE.
Man, I really wish I was a chicken at times.
