In my headcanon, the Soul is an unpredictable, chaotic being that does whatever it wants and behaves unexpectedly humanly. It can be slow-witted, over-reactive, has its own hobbies, and loves to comment on everything.

It has a solid form and a small form, so if there's a small space where They need to pass through or climb quickly, it's preferable to move in the shape of a heart. When it's not needed, it walks behind Kris. Only he can see it. The soul can taste things, but only through Kris himself, so it makes him eat a lot of stuff (including moss), and they can share dreams if it wants, or just his own.

Sometimes it can hear his thoughts, and sometimes it can't. Despite its appearance and apparent absolute power, it's not like that. Because of them, Kris has red eyes and a special power. It can move away from him, but they're inseparable.

thinking about how when you experience a lot of shame in your formative years (indirectly, directly, as abuse or just as an extant part of your environment) it becomes really difficult to be perceived by other people in general. the mere concept of someone watching me do anything, whether it's a totally normal activity or something unfamiliar of embarrassing, whether I'm working in an excel spreadsheet or being horny on main, it just makes my skin crawl and my brain turn to static because I cannot convince myself that it's okay to be seen and experienced. because to exist is to be ashamed and embarrassed of myself, whether I'm failing at something or not, because my instinctive reaction to anyone commenting on ANYTHING I'm doing is to crawl into a hole and die. it's such a bizarre and dehumanizing feeling to just not be able to exist without constantly thinking about how you are being Perceived. ceaseless watcher give me a god damn break.

it's okay, ulysses ogre. you can back up and try dubliners, it's a short story collection with much more straightforward prose, you can dive deep on one piece at a time, and once you've toyed around with that then I'm sure you'll have an easier time with ulysses. besides, I had an irish lit professor who'd been studying finnegans wake for twenty years and she said she still didn't really know what was going on in it. ulysses ogre, what really matters is if you are enjoying your time with literature and feel like you are gaining something, not whether you reach the "correct" conclusions. there's no need to try and force yourself through something if you feel like you aren't on an even enough plane with the text to reap any of its rewards.
