Yesterday, members of the Met Outdoor Club and I hiked the Feather Falls National Scenic Trail outside of Oroville, CA. The trail is a 9 mile loop with amazing views of Bald Rock Dome, Bald Rock Canyon, and Feather Falls, the 6th largest fall in the United States at 640 feet. The trail to the falls forks about a quarter of a mile down the path. You can either take the Lower or Upper Trail to the falls. We took the upper trail to the right and hiked about 4.5 miles to a fork that meets the Lower Trail and the climb to Feather Falls. The Upper Trail gradually elevates and it was wide with occasional narrow segments with lots of overgrown Poison Oak. We broke bread at the Feather Falls lookout point and took in the view while we educated each other on the flora, fauna, environment and the indigenous people of the land, the Yamani Maidu. To complete the loop, we exited through the Lower Trail. Although it is shorter at about 3.5 miles, it was more difficult due to occasionally steep elevation changes. This trail is primarily uphill to the parking lot. The first quarter of the way, we were going downhill maneuvering through big holes, harsh terrain, and super narrow segments with poison oak on both sides of the trail. After that, the remaining three quarters of the way were primarily uphill. The last mile was felt for sure and we had to take breaks to catch our breath to keep going. Lucky for us, there are benches along the way to rest. It took us 5 hours to complete the nine-mile loop including breaking bread at the Feather Falls lookout point. It was worth the pain, and all of us felt accomplished at the end of the hike. I recommend this trail for sure, but maybe start on the Lower Trail. #xicanointhewilderness #featherfalls #featherfallsnationalscenictrail #onlyatthemet #metoutdoorclub #senderismo #hikecalifornia #nols (at Feather Falls Trail) https://www.instagram.com/xicogonzalez/p/BxfjX-6As4kvTtIfLdUGz-vem8d--5UgTCA0Uw0/?igshid=1l3dsonafcf0c

#xicanointhewilderness is back! I decided to take a mental health day to be introspective and reflect about issues that require some thought and action on my part. I hit the Shingle Falls Trail at the Spenceville Wildlife Area in Wheatland, CA. This is one of my favorite hikes in the greater Sacramento area. I had a great time hiking, reflecting, and breaking bread amongst the relaxing musical sound of running water on its way to the Shingle Falls waterfall. That’s my favorite sound! The whole Met Outdoor Club is graduating in less than a month and I wanted to do something nice for them. First I thought about buying them green cords to go with their graduation gowns, then I remembered that one of them is also in the Makers’ Club and is a badass using the laser cutter. I quickly designed a medal to be cut and etched in wood. The graphic is by a designer named Patrimonio, and it features a female hiker amongst mountains and pine trees. I just added the wording and a star with a circle to be cut inside of it. I went to Michael’s and bought leather string to be used as necklaces. ¡Sas! Wood and leather, very outdoorsy! I’m going to miss this crew! Shout out to Lola, Xandra, Sophia, Jenna, Nia, Evelin, Josh, Pedro, Jeremiah, J’Wan, Carlo, and Renee. We went on some amazing hikes over the past four years! PAISAS, PAISAJES Y POLITICA Selected Works by Xico González Saturday, September 9th, 2017 6:00pm -9:00pm Location: The Union Gallery 2126 K Street, Sacramento, CA 95818 Paisas, paisajes y política is an exhibit by Sacraztlán artivist, educator and poet Xico González that features recent portraits, and landscapes captured through film and digital photography, as well as selected political serigraphs. The Portraits The portraits feature Xico’s former Chicano/Native students at the Met Sacramento High School. Most of whom are the first members of their family to obtain a high school diploma and/or attend a two or four year university. The rest of the portraits feature community members, and cultural workers at rallies and actions to bring social justice to underrepresented communities. The Landscapes Most of the landscapes were taken in Canada’s Yukon Territory, where Xico spent a month backpacking and white water canoeing with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Xico recognizes the lack of diversity in outdoor exploration, and wishes to inspire people of color to partake in outdoor leadership and recreational activities Also included are landscapes taken at the Grand Canyon, and in Northern California at state, and regional parks where Xico often hikes with students and community members. The Serigraphs The serigraphs selected for this exhibit are from actions in support of human rights in the United States and abroad.
