Teamwork is one of the main core that makes a team great. Coach Elai of the CHASE Basketball Women's emphasizes on the team's technique that made them possible to bagged the championship "We have to be a team. Kasi ayun yung lamang naming sa iba eh, may mga hindi magkakasundo na students sa ibang courses" she stated.
The team is composed of different students from the programs of Mass Communication and PBEN. Most of the school's varsity are included in the said team consist of the following students: Joanne Pecson, Jewel Carreon, Jolina Lagman & Gaby Carreon.
Coach Elai stated that every year is always a struggle because of acquiring new faces and rebuilding of trust and comfort within players in the team. Getting back to basics is her main concern and recruiting more potential players to join the team.

HOW TO BE A CHAMPION: 5 WAYS TO OWN THAT BASKETBALL TITLE
by Buena Rica Tojos Pascual

1.) Prepare for practice.
Pull yourself together and demand cooperation from your whole body, including your mind, heart and spirit. Get your head in the game, but be ready for it as well. Encourage yourself to do better every time; this will be an individual reflection of what you will show in the game and what you are willing to give the team— and make sure it’s your 100%.
2.) Be mindful of the “domino” effect.
Keep the work as a “team.” It’s not just about being able to split tasks inside the court. This is about being effective together, something that cannot be achieved overnight. The team’s bond and connection must be given early and constant attention just as much as with the drills, objectives and etc. Part of every training is not only to improve strength and practice basketball skills but to also see to it how every player is a contributing factor to the team’s well being. This is why the attitude that every player brings in from practices to games is important, the shared energy, hype and feelings as well affects the team and its play.
3.) Embrace awesome responsibility.
You have been given the willpower, to choose things and are most likely responsible of the way you feel and carry yourself. Show up, always (whether you are not feeling it today or thinking of skipping training) remember what you signed up for. Remember that a group championship must be achieved together as a group as well. Choose to be dedicated from the smallest to the biggest requirements that you will have to do. Do not cheat during trainings, learn and gain from everything rather than being defeated by the circumstances itself. Be mindful of your thoughts, emotions and your words as well. Good communication with those in the team and outside the team is part of training yourself on how to properly express yourself and your emotions.
4.) Take good care of yourself.
Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Know the difference between your body giving up or just letting your mind give up. Discern when to go, stop and take a pause. What good will all your hardwork do if it is already your own body that’s giving up on you? Strengthen your mind as you toughen your heart, look after what you drink and eat as to what kind of nutrients you are feeding yourself with. Your body is exerting effort and the energy that you have must be sufficient in order to achieve your goal.
5.) Keep yourself aware.
Evaluate yourself before you start your day and before ending it. A prayer of faith and humility expressing gratefulness to God’s wonderful grace guides a person throughout the day. This helps us to be thankful of the mere fact that we have a life, a goal and gives us a sense of purpose to strive greatly and remember our very purpose in life. That at the end of the day, what matters more than being a cheerful loser or a humble winner is the relationship that you are able to build and the values that you get through experience.

She first coached the Mass Communication Basketball Women Team for five years until it turned into CHASE where PBREN (Psychology, Biology, Religious Education and Nursing) was merged together with Mass Comm. and she continued to coached them for two years, in total, she had been coaching the team for seven years. She also played for the team back when she was still in college in SPUQC as a Mass Communication student for 3 years as a Point Guard. She decided to continue with CHASE and coach them when she saw that the team had a potential in winning. She was just an assistant coach in 2014 until the head coach during that time decided to leave the team. Elai came to the decision to take a risk and be the head coach of CHASE from there on.
“ayoko silang iwan na naghahanap ng coach tapos bahala na diba, ayoko sila na magstart from scratch.”

The most important strategy in winning according to her is teamwork, “We have to be a team” is what she always says to the them. Every year, new players come in and old players come to say goodbye, Elai makes sure that the bond of the players are intact and the team is whole. One way in gaining the trust of the players is “you have to make them your friend”.
“kailangan natin maging friends sa court, kailangan natin magain yung trust ng isa’t isa para mas masarap yung feeling na pag naglaro tayo”

What Elai likes the most about CHASE is the solid friendship of the team despite coming from different courses, they all managed to feel comfortable with each other, lift one another and hangout after trainings and games. Because of this relationship, they all love to play basketball and she can see that they are really enjoying it. It was their friendship, energy and dedication to win that makes CHASE different from the other teams.

When asked if she would still be continuing to coach CHASE in the future, she answered:
“Of course! As long as gusto nila maglaro.” She also added, “Gusto kong ilove nila yung basketball as much as I love it.”
