oliver is still not over how easily josh wanted to break up the first time. how he said it was just “misplaced grief” and they were just “having fun”

so apologies if oliver is not entirely believing the whole “i think im falling for you” thing now. okay.

he got his heart shattered the first time around when he thought they were doing great. and was absolutely blindsided. and you can’t exactly blame him for being cautious and wanting to end things on his own terms this time around (should it come to that, but it won’t, because they will communicate and talk it out and sort it out)

any thoughts on the colour yellow in relation to josh nichols

i love this as a certified yellow enjoyer myself

i feel like he would like the color yellow. he's shown to actually be a very sweet and caring person underneath this rule following and more gruff exterior, and i think the person he is underneath is really similar to the vibe of yellow. like nichols when he's with oliver and happy and in love feels just like the color yellow, like finally coming home after a long day to a familiar comfort.

of course, in canon nichols is a very neutral colored guy; he doesn't wear much of anything bright, and it's all kind of those greys and blues that you would associate with professionalism. but this masking of the fact that he loves those kinds of bright colors is the same as the way he seems to mask how gentle and kind he is. when he first meets oliver he's guarded and serious, hiding his true self behind some kind of mask because he wants to be taken seriously.

and i like to think it stems from his past; to me he was in the military because his family's been in the military for generations, and so he's raised in an environment where men are strong and they don't feel and they don't cry. and this is hard for a young nichols who feels everything super strongly and doesn't understand social cues and likes guys instead of girls yet he has to fit in. so he learns to mask anything that's not the perfect man.

and that includes the fact that he likes colors, the fact that he falls too easily, the fact that when he looks at oliver for the first time he has a feeling in his chest that makes him want to start something between them. when most people ask if he has a favorite color, he doesn't tell them the truth, because for a man like him to say he loves the brightness and joy of yellow would be an embarrassment to the man he's meant to be.

but when oliver asks he doesn't hesitate, because he knows oliver sees beneath all that and understands who he truly is on a level most don't. and the first thing yellow he's worn in years is a tie oliver got him, because now he finally feels that it's possible for that side of him to be appreciated
