A Nuzlocke of Pokemon White: The Failed Attempt (fuck you Clay)

Before this, in since deleted posts, I had spoken about a previous Nuzlocke that I aborted after the 2nd gym as I wanted to restart- you can ignore this, it isn’t very important as I was learning and getting a feel of things ‘^u^

This is just 3 posts compiled into one! So on occasion previous sections are referred to as a different post.

This is mainly a diary of sorts. I do try to entertain but this is basically me live-posting the game and the first time of me ever doing this, hence lacking grammar/punctuation or generally sporadic or uninteresting writing. I do assume you have a basic idea of what a Nuzlocke is, as well as knowledge on pokemon :)

I’m playing with general nuzlocke rules, but not all of them. Dupes clause obviously, level caps, must nickname all Pokemon, shiny clause, gift Pokemon/eggs are separate encounters- but I am playing on switch mode w battle and healing items allowed since this is baby’s first nuzlocke

I am playing on official hardware with no access to an action replay or any kind of save file editing for rare candies, So I have to grind for EXP which sucks because this is gen 5, things take ages, and I suck at identifying crit ranges before it’s too late no matter how much pchal or wolfyvgc I watch

I chose Snivy as opposed to Oshawott this time around, purely just because I love the design- also the panpour I receive in the dreamyard can be used for cut, dive, surf, and waterfall later in the game. Even if I just use it’s corpse lmao. Even though it’s the worst choice matchup wise considering there are quite a few major trainers w bug types and obviously I don’t get it’s hidden abilty- I do get access to aerial ace, and there are very strong fire types anyway. But mainly because it’s my favourite starter design wise across all games. (Love my little prince ^u^)

Snivy has an adamant nature with pretty mid IVs, a godawful special attack IV, but an almost perfect speed IV. Pretty sure this is fine, as Serperior is mainly focused on speed and defence + it gets pretty decent physical attacks. Named him Keylimepie

Route 1 encounter was a Lillipup with unfortunately a calm nature :( I named her creampuff (I think I just want dessert)

COMPLETELY zoned on out route 2 and killed the Patrat I encountered for no reason (I fucking hate the Patrat line so it’s fine <3 (probably the only pokemon I hate after Pelipper. Fuck you Pelipper.)) but that means I missed out on fodder, will likely encounter it in the future when there’s better stuff to find, and I have an 80% of getting the worst encounter in the dreamyard so blehhhhhh (I count gift encounters separately)

I name the Panpour I receive Sorbet, she has a jolly nature and awful IVs (with only a SINGULAR special attack IV) apart from HP so that’s bad for right now considering we’ll want to be using watergun in the gym

Levelling up for the gym/rival battle goes smoothly until about level 12 (only level 10 on Panpour I HAVE BEEN LEVELLING THE OTHER TWO FOR NEARLY AN HOUR) then it’s just torture so I give up and go aheadwith Cheren’s fight in the hopes I’ll gain more EXP from a trainer battle :’)

Since my game cartridge is only a few years younger than I am, and very well loved I gotta save every few minutes because I’m paranoid after losing 2hrs playtime on my first run. I will in fact hold a mini funeral for my fucking video game if this thing breaks. I am holding my breath every time a battle ends or I exit a building because that’s when it loves to crash apparently

I only use Panpour in Cheren’s fight with the use of a single potion and this thing still isn’t level 11 >:0

I’m not going to be able to use the berries he gives me in the second half of the gym battle as another downside of choosing Snivy is Chili has a Pansear knowing incinerate and I’d prefer not to waste them right now- but I do equip one onto Sorbet so she can gain more EXP in the 2 battles leading up to Chili

THE FUCKING LILLIPUP’S GOT PICKUP AND USE MY BERRIES AGAINST ME FUCKKKKKK SEREBII SAID IT WAS VITAL SPIRIT It’s fine though, just annoying. I win but decide to go back to levelling Panpour to at least level 12

Annnddd I immediately change my mind because that EXP bar is barely moving

The monkey’s death will not weigh heavy on my conscience if it occurs

Speaking of that in the next battle I almost lose her to a Patrat using bide

For the actual gym battle I lead with Lillipup (level 13), leer twice, bite twice with a flinch, getting through the first Pokemon without lowering any stats or losing HP

I’m not as daring against Pansear, especially since it’s faster so I only leer once, do a little damage before swapping into Panpour (level 12) Battle goes much cleaner than my first run w the only death being Creampuff’s oran berry

I give Sorbet work up instead of leer for now, it would’ve been nice on keylime (Snivy) unfortunately he doesn’t learn it, but turns out we get growth just one level later

Then it’s dreamyard and audino time! We encounter…

Patrat. Yay. It gets it out of the way at least- I name her Cinnamon. She has a mild nature and similarly to the rest of my team, no IVs to really take note of

I heal then level a little with the Audinos before heading to the next city. It’s very satisfying gaining like a level and a half with a single battle, but growl is especially annoying considering my team are physical attackers right now

During levelling up, I get the 5% Musharna encounter and Cinnamon tanks a psybeam with 1 HP remaining. The little shit won’t die

Some trainer battles on route 3 then it’s time for more of team plasma and wellspring cave

I would love to have a Roggenrola, but Drilbur is a far, far better encounter and guaranteed with repels anyway

Anyway I name the Drilbur, Cobbler. She’s a neutral nature, decent defense IV but the worst possible speed IV :((( I love her anyway

Route 3 I wait until the double grass and we get a single Purrloin instead of the Blitzle or Pidove I wanted. I name him liquorice and we finallyhave a full team!! Similarly to Lillipup we get unlucky nature-wise as it’s relaxed but we have pretty good IVs! I go back for the items I missed in the lighter grass, battle trainers to get to nacrene city and I’m done for the day-

Soooo. Drilbur (Cobbler) died pretty much immediately after that first post :|

Wtf man, she was like my left hand lady- ngl the team is kinda dogshit without her slow ass <\3

Woke up and started levelling after breakfast in the hopes that I won’t get caught out like that in future

I reach Nacrene city without further death, I pick up a miracle seed then it’s time for the N jumpscare I 100% forgot the first time around

My Pinwheel exterior encounter is a tympole. I am coping with this fact only because water-ground is an amazing type combo. I also hate the Tympole line, why do they have tumors (Seismitoad is valid). The face of this thing really reminds me of O’hare from the Lorax movie TwT. At the very least I now have a better water type than the Monkey because that thing won’t hold up reliably in a few more gyms

She’s dubbed Ricepuddin(g) because I kinda like the dessert/food naming scheme I got going. Andddd we have a decent nature of rash!

Her IVs are pretty good, but a bad special attack one unfortunately- but the perfect 31 on speed makes up for things! She’s already grown on me, I might have to shiny hunt Tympole in future because the shiny is really nice

I unlock the nurse outside the actual forest, part of the reason why I was pretty happy with Liquorice (Purrloin) if that we have immunity from psychic type moves, and the Nurse’s only attacking move is one of those

Everyone is successfully levelled to 19 without fuss, so it’s time for the gym! (And Clyde my beloved <3)

Similar to last time, I immediately lose a pokemon to Lenora’s Herdier. People say to be careful of Watchog but noooooo it’s this fucker. Sorbet is dead which is a shame because I was actually pretty attached to her D:

I swap into Keylime (Servine) growth, then vinewhip twice. Unfortunately twice isn’t enough to kill and I survive two stab takedowns with 6 HP o.o

Next I send out Cinnamon to use Detect and potentially get rid of that powered up retaliate that I do live in fear of. Lenora’s Watchog just uses leer so I hypnosis instead to then send out Creampuff to intimidate and kill with rocksmash

Things would’ve been fine if not for Lenora’s super potion- the Watchog wakes up next turn and uses hypnosis, putting Creampuff asleep and making me waste a turn on an awakening (I should’ve thought ahead and gave out chesto berries)

The intimidate was a good play because retaliate doesn’t do much and I can continue chipping away w rock smash. We then win with only 1 death, being Sorbet (Panpour). But tbf she wasn’t going to be much use now I have Ricepuddin (Tympole), the monkeys are only good early game imo

(Team plasma steal what is VERY OBVIOUSLY a dragonite skull so we now get access to the good part of Pinwheel forest)

I’m ideally hoping for Venopede, Petilil isn’t as big of a deal to me this time around as I have Keylime (as much as Lilligant is one of my faves)

I kinda wish they made Burgh a late game gym leader because they gave us soooo many great bug types in this region, Lenora as well- she’s kinda terrifying since normal will hit anything that’s not ghost

Next encounter is a Sewaddle which is ok, but not the greatest <\3 quad weaknesses aren’t great, but like I said the bug pokemon in this gen are pretty cool- also if it lives till the elite 4 we have something against 2 or 3 of em

He straight up almost murders Cinnamon so he’s based in my opinion

I can’t think of green dessert for the actual life of me, so he’s Kiwi. Kiwi has adamant which is an excellent nature, well done Kiwi. Bad IVs for what I need him for though. I’m really not getting lucky on that front :((

Since Sorbet is now dead, Kiwi gets to join the team because I forgot to but her in the grave box (I WILL be lugging around corpses to use as HM slaves later, you CANNOT stop me)

I have no fire types or a Pidove, so we are leading with Cinnamon whenever I step into tall grass. I obviously don’t want her dead unless it calls for it as fodder is useful, but again I don’t particularly like the Patrat line.

I make my way through the forest and dodge trainer battles when I can just in case. I pick up the TM for grass knot and use it on Kiwi- grab the miracle seed as well. I didn’t realise I’d get be in here, otherwise I would’ve grabbed charcoal in the last city oof. I also get the quick claw before skyarrow bridge B)

Castelia is one of my favourite cities across the games- I grab a leaf stone for cash since the only stones offered are only required to evolve the monkeys, and mine is dead. I do the dancer miniquest to collect gift items as well as exploring the city and grabbing the eviolite (I’ll do the battle company after the gym)

Gym 3 is …complicated. 3 different lines of bug Pokemon show up, Venipede- weak to fire, flying, and rock

Sewaddle, weak to fire, ice, poison, flying, bug, and rock

Then Dwebble, weak to water, rock, and steel

Losing Drilbur was kinda huge because while I can use Ricepuddin (Tympole) against any Dwebble comfortably- my only answer for the Sewaddle line would be Kiwi (newly evolved Swadloon) who is also weak to the bug moves I would be using against the exact same Pokemon family as itself. Drilbur would have metal claw and rock throw so RIP queen. I was an idiot unfortunately

Before the gym itself I do in fact remember the existence of route 4, so head there to hopefully (please please please please) get a darumaka

I get the 20% Scraggy which is cool, yes. But I accidentally crit and lose the encounter <\3

THINGS ARENT GOING PARTICULARLY WELL

I train everyone I plan on using up to 22/23- so Ricepuddin (Tympole), Creampuff (Herdier), and everyone’s favourite for some fucking reason?- Cinnamon (Watchog)

Brief team plasma interaction then it’s time for the gym itself!

I gotta stop looking away and spamming A because I almost lost Creampuff

AND I KEEP STEPPING ON THE STUPID ASS CLOWN BUTTONS

For the gym fight itself I definitely make burgh use his two hyper potions on Whirlipede on purpose. Yeah…

I get very lucky and completely avoid getting Creampuff poisoned, yayyy!!

Next up is Dwebble so I switch into Ricepuddin for an easy sweep now the potions are gone. Things are nice and easy which is perfect for my sanity :)

It’s then back to Creampuff to intimidate and get some damage in- but I immediately swap for Kiwi because bite is doing jackshit

The only bug move Levanny has is bug buzz, only 30 power with the bonus of lowering special attack which is fine as we’re physical

And it immediately starts to protect. I know AI doesn’t have feelings, much less a Pokemon battle AI- but let me have my fun

The problems arise when Levanny crits on Kiwi, almost taking him out

Instead of switching I decide to heal (we are allowing battle items if you didn’t see part 1)

I’m being incredibly risky rn, bugbuzz does about 1/3 of HP so there’s a decent chance I lose Kiwi

I get Levanny down to red HP then swap for Cinnamon to be safe

No one dies!!!! Hooray!!! We came very close though <\3

Before I forget, we’ll hit up the battle company in Castelia for much needed items- ESPECIALLY THE EXP. SHARE C’MERE I NEED YOU- as well as things like a scope lens for a higher crit rate, and pokeballs. notably quick balls in the hopes of catching encounters without having to weaken and risk losing them doing so

We do have to battle almost everyone to grab all the items but it’s fine, I’m a big girl B)

I kinda forget Bianca’s trainer battle isinside the gatehouse instead of route 4 but things are again fine

There’s no route 4 encounter since we lost it yesterday ‘^u^

Apparently everyone wants a piece of because Cheren’s next- I healed up dw and again the battle is smooth since everyone is a few levels above

I got really distracted so I don’t have much commentary on route 4, only that the Petilil and cotnee lines are superrrr annoying without super effective moves (I forgot about Kiwi lol)

I grab dig which we DEFINITELY NEED SINCE I ACCIDENTALLY KILLED OFF COBBLER and teach it to both Cinnamon and Creampuff

I buy. A lot. Of lemonade. Thirsy :3

Desert resort time! I decide to get my encounter inside so the encounter slot for scraggy is instead Sigilyph (I would like tailwind and a decent flying type)

You can get a guaranteed darmanitan by visiting Icirrus city in the winter (so next month) and grabbing a rage candy bar- but I’ll be able to grab a litwick eventually

I oneshot the doctor’s solosis at the entrance of the resort for the free heal then it’s encounter time >:)

I get Dwebble. I am not winning at life

ALL OF MY POKEMON ARE PHYSICAL ATTACKERS THIS ISNT VERY DIVERSITY WIN

Good news is we immediately have another encounter in the relic castle- boy oh boy, I love to gamble >:3

I won’t be able to check nature and IVs on my new team members until a Pokemon centre as I have a full party currently-

I grab black glasses on the way as well to power up dark type moves

You can get a Volcarona in the relic castle, but it’s unfortunately post game <\3 besides, we need more fodder rn

Anyway we gain a Yamask and I name her Toffee- unfortunately not the sandile that would’ve helped right now, but it was a 50/50 chance

WANNA GUESS WHO LOSES LIQUORICE (Liepard) TO A CRIT AIRSLASH FROM SIGILYPH AND THEN ALMOST CREAMPUFF TO A CRIT PSYBEAM??

I continue through the ruins, grab the plume fossil, then we’re racing back to Nacrene to revive it and check up on our 2, now 3 team members

Archen is revived (from a fossil dw) and she’s named Poprocks

She has a mild nature which is fine but yet again the game really hates me and we have horrible IVs, especially in her two main stats- Attack and Speed

At the very least, it isn’t a nature that disadvantages either of those stats >n<

Now the two from earlier!

First is Toffee (Yamask) who’s holding a spell tag! Yayyy!!! Gentle nature with… bad IVs. The nature isn’t the best either. Minus speed or attack would’ve been optimal lol

My game cartridge may genuinely have something against me

Caramel is kind of? Better? Bold nature- good for the defence but lowering attack, its second best stat as Crustle

Perfect defense IV though! This is probably the first thing done right in the entire game <\3

I am not! Looking forward to piecing together a strat for Elesa so I stop playing for the day

Ok we’re finally in Nimbasa and I get the bike and purchase the TM for safeguard as status conditions are VERY annoying (ideally if I had caught a petilil to trade for cottonee, or was playing black to catch one myself- this would be amazing w prankster provided that was the ability I got)

I was trying to strategise somewhat last night and depending on the encounters we get on routes 5 and 16, we may or may not be screwed <\3

But before I can actually get my encounters, I’m dragged to the musical and forced to play dress up. It’s fineeee I loved this feature when I was little and would play it for hours.

Anyway on route 5 I find a minccino which is definitely one of my favourite normal types and something that learns dig, but not the Solosis I was hoping for. Good thing is the encounter tables for 5 and 16 are identical

I name him Marshmalow (the extra “l” won’t fit) He has both an adamant nature and the ability technician so I am VERY happy- with ACTUALLY DECENT IVs!!! (Except special defence but I’m not too fussed) This is very exciting for me

I train to the level cap before getting my route 16 encounter because I am pretty concerned at losing someone in a trainer battle if I’m not careful

…I accidentally fainted another encounter, so nothing for me on route 16 :(

I pick up a Petilil in Lostlorn forest

I name her mint- she has decent IVs (perfect 31 on attack) and a hasty nature with the ability “own tempo” I decide to keep her as when she eventually learns petal dance (hopefully) that’s 2-3 turns of 120 damage without the debuff of confusion afterwards. Also I really need a special attacker. While I can get a sunstone in nimbasa, I won’t be evolving her until level 35 as that’s when she learns energy ball

I collect items around the city and visit anville town to let some guy infodump about trains to me. I’m not going to challenge the battle subway as I have no idea if that’d count as a loss if anything fainted- so none of the TMs there unfortunately

It’s also time for my ferris wheel date with N >:3 (It’s absolutely not a date)

For the 4th gym the team is as follows:

Servine, Herdier, Minccino, Palpitoad, Watchog, and Yamask

I’ll mainly be leading with either Palpitoad or Herdier, as the Emolga in this gym and very irritating and the Blitzle and Zebstrika have flame charge- and Palpitoads bubble beam may reduce speed and also hits decently hard for a special attack from a physical attacker

The Elesa fight is immediately scary as voltswitch leaves Creampuff (Herdier) with 19HP on a critical so I gotta heal instead of switch as these fuckers know pursuit

I genuinely hate Emolgas. Like actually. This is hell

I’m considering using Toffee (Yamask) for disable- but again, these things have pursuit and I’m not all that sure if disable is still in effect when Pokemon switch out

I was trying to save Ricepuddin (Palpitoad) for the last half- but I just can’t put up w voltswitch. They start using aerial ace instead which does muchhhh less damage so I’m comfortable now. I set up aqua ring to be safe though

Finally we’re on Zebstrika and this thing doesn’t bother using flamecharge to up speed since it’s not very effective on Ricepuddin. Mudshot lowers speed so in a few turns we’re faster. it’s an easy win with Mudshot since all of Elesa’s hyper potions were used up and I get the badge and voltswitch (nothing learns it rip)

Next is the Cheren rival battle. Super luck on his Tranquill is fairly upsetting, but luckily I have Poprocks (Archen) with me who knows ancient power so I one shot it and gain the stat boost as well and get to again one shot the rest of his team

Little double battle against literal infants then it’s time to catch a Ducklett on Driftveil bridge- I catch her and name her Yogurt. Quiet nature and decent IVs, so considering my past luck I’m pretty happy

We can also go pick another Pokemon at cold storage so I do just that- it’s Vanillite or Timburr since I already have Herdier and Minccino

On the way I pick up the rocky helmet and nevermelt ice as well as the other items available before grabbing my encounter of a Timburr. Not the Vanillite I would’ve really preferred but it’s fine.

Name her Cupcake, she has a hasty nature and yet again I get superrrr unlucky with 3/6 of the IVs <\3

Farming Audino for EXP is pretty awful now. Especially since they have secret power that has a chance of putting me to sleep

I also spend a good 6 minutes spamming A in front of a vending machine for lemonade because screw potion prices

It’s also taken me over a decade to realise that the Energy root healing item is supposed to look like an arm flexing

I grab the expert belt as well since everyone is level 30 (1 below the level cap) and manage to put my braincells together in order to remember the existence of route 6

I grab an Emolga and we’re good B)

She’s named Apricot and I’m VERY glad we got her incase we miss out on an electric type in Chargestone. Hopefully not though, since Emolga’s stats aren’t great. She has a neutral nature and decent IVs except slightly lacking in defence

Soooo I continue with the plot and deal with cold storage which is easy considering the strongest thing in here is level 25

Time for the gym! There’s quite a few trainers on the way as well but it turns out I don’t gotta fight many since I’m good at the lift puzzle

I start off with Keylime. I get crit by a Bulldoze- it doesn’t do much but I’m now slower than Clay’s Krokorok unfortunately

I take down the first Krokorok and switch out as my defence was lowered by a crunch and I do NOT wanna risk things

Excadrill is sent out next so I opt for Ricepuddin and set up my aqua ring. The fucker goes for hone claws so I’m already paranoid. HE DOES IT TWICE AND NOW IM PRAYING ONE OF MY BUBBLE BEAMS LOWERS SPEED OR ROCKSMASH LOWERS DEFENCE

Excadrill then uses slash and easily takes Palpitoad down to less than half HP without a damn crit.

I am SWEATING. Especially since the crit rate of slash can go up :(((

I don’t want to lose Palpitoad so I decide to potentially sack Yogurt (Ducklett)

It uses slash again, gets a crit- and Yogurt dies immediately. Oh god.

Kiwi has the best Defence stat out of my team, so I switch him.

Just when I think I may stand a chance, Kiwi is KO’ed by a simple rockslide- no crit at all. I’m sooooo cooked. The next sacrifice is Poprocks (Archen)

Clay still has a hyper potion left. If I don’t get rid of Excadrill in a single hit, this thing will be back to full health and sweep me.

I spend ages debating whether I use agility or rocksmash. I choose rocksmash.

It doesn’t matter- this thing is a beast and too fast.

Next is my starter. Keylime the Servine. Since Excadrill’s defence is already lowered by one stage and Keylime is mostly physical- I gotta go for vine whip over Mega drain. We don’t make it.

I have 2 Pokemon left. A Petilil that absolutely doesn’t stand a chance, or my half dead Palpitoad. I choose to offer up Petilil in the hopes of getting Palpitoad to full health and miraculously taking down both this Excadrill AND the other Krokorok.

But the problem is. Mint (Petilil) was holding a rocky helmet. So now Excadrill is in the red for HP. Why is this bad? Because the fucker is about to be put to full health with a hyper potion.

PALPITOAD LIVES A SLASH. THERE WOULD BE A MINUSCULE CHANCE. IF ONLY I GOT LUCKY AND LOWERED SPEED.

I whiteout. My first attempt is a failure. God fucking dammit I should’ve played X/Y instead
