An Examination of Joseph Cullman’s Childhood

Okay, while I don’t want to make a habit of answering twitter asks here on tumblr, this got my brain buzzing, and I want a little more room to ramble than in a tweet thread.

Before we get started, the lovely artwork I’m using for this post was drawn by Sauce/Jambeebot and was posted on their public twitter before it went down. As always, I’ll gently remind you not to post any of the private pictures from the SnaccPop Studio patreon. It’s only $3 to sign up, and it really supports this engaging game. Quick warning, Something’s Wrong with Sunny Day Jack is an Adults Only game, so there will likely be some mature themes discussed. At least one image I use will depict a person committing self-harm while being encouraged verbally to do so. Take care when indulging in this fandom.

With all that out of the way, let’s get down to business.

First, let’s list out the facts we do know about Joseph’s childhood that are canon according to the official Sunny Day Jack twitter.

What would Jack do if he found out Sunshine has a certain type that they’re into? And that type is the “bad boy”? Just, imagine if Jack asks his Sunshine what’s their type when getting to know them, and they end up giving a description that sounds almost exactly like his “bad boy” self Joseph.😂

I can imagine that would cause a bit of cognitive dissonance for Jack. Considering how remembering that he used to be Joseph was a trauma trigger for him, and in the past he regretted his "bad boy" attitude that led him to get tattoos when he was a teen...

Honestly, I don't think Joseph was a "bad boy" as an adult. Yes, he fits the stereotype when it comes to his appearance - what with being tall, muscular, having numerous piercings, tattoos, and wearing attire we tend to associate with the look of a "bad boy." He also smokes, which is a pretty stereotypical "bad boy" behavior. Plus there were hints that he actually went through a "bad boy" phase as a teen, but he seemed to be ashamed of that phase of his life after growing out of it.

In the recording with the psyche consultant, Joseph explicitly expressed regret for getting the tattoos, and he worries about doing right by the children. He's rather soft spoken and tries to be friendly, overall showing none of that typical "bad boy" attitude. He even stutters a bit, showing how nervous he is. There's no cocky confidence in his attitude that he seemed to display as a teen.

Then there's the interview with reporter Dan. Joseph shows discomfort when being judged for his appearance in a sexual way. He even cuts things short once the reporter made direct sexual insinuations about his past. It suggests that he might have some issues being judged based solely on his appearance.

Joseph might have been a "bad boy" in the past, but he turned his life around as an adult. He had friends on the set in his co-stars who spoke highly of him, as seen in a couple pictures Sauce posted on their old twitter.

It would seem that even while he was still alive, Joseph was trying to separate himself from his past as a "bad boy." He did run away from home and changed his name for a reason after all. I think it's this drive that ultimately led to Joseph deluding himself that he's Jack in the present after his death.

Sometimes we go through phases were we act up and practically become a different person than who we really are deep down, and we often look back on those periods of our life with regret. This seems to be the case with Joseph due to a troubled childhood. I've gone over some of the hints we've gotten of it and my own thoughts in this post.

So, really, it seems that even as an adult, Joseph was trying not to be a "bad boy" or be judged by his appearance or past. I imagine Jack would have a lot of unpleasant feelings towards the idea that it's this sort of person that his precious sunshine is attracted to.

I suspect that it would lead to some conversations, with Jack trying to find out what about this "bad boy" attitude that draws sunshine in... while also making sure MC is aware of how risky some of those behaviors are. If it's just the aesthetic, well that's just fine. Anyone should dress the way they feel comfortable, and there's no harm in finding a certain style of dress attractive.

Though it might be difficult for Jack to dress up as a "bad boy" to suit their tastes. If he tried, I imagine it would be less like Joseph's look and more like a Sunny Day Jack-themed "bad boy" appearance that would look more silly than rebellious.

It would be concerning to Jack if MC might be attracted to someone who might disregard their feelings or treat them with little care like the "bad boy" stereotype. It can also be pretty self-destructive and lead to reckless behavior and choices that leave deep regrets, like Joseph felt in his adulthood.

Jack wants MC to be happy and for their light to shine bright. He doesn't want to stifle that light, but taking care of them comes first. He'll be whatever they want him to be, but that doesn't mean he won't encourage them to want him to be the person he wants to be.

I suspect that Joseph was judged a lot for his appearance, both as himself and as Jack. Given how desperately he's clung to his persona as Jack in the present, I think we can tell which way he would rather be perceived.

As an aside, this is why I personally am not exactly keen on the fanon that Joseph calls his lover "doll." That sort of nickname tends to focus on a person's appearance and can be kind of objectifying. As we've seen with the interview with Dan, Joseph had to face quite a bit of that himself, and he didn't care for it.

I understand the urge to differentiate Joseph from Jack with a different nickname for his love interest, but I don't personally see Joseph and Jack as totally separate people. As I've said in a previous post, I think that there's more of Joseph in the Jack that we know than Jack would care to admit.

Not to knock anyone who feels that nickname is fitting, has a different interpretation of it, or likes it in general. Don't let me dictate how you have fun with the character and setting. Fanon is for fun after all~! It's just something that I couldn't help but think about when examining how Joseph might have some issues with being judged for his appearance and objectified by others.

���� Jack absolutely adores your kid!! He'll treat them like glass and help you take care of them. You had watched the vhs with your kid in the room, and thankfully your kid can see and touch Jack! He's over the moon when he finds out. He's even more happy to take care of them! Baby crying in the middle of the night? Get your rest sunshine, he'll take care of it. Need to go to work buy your baby sitter bailed? He'll stay behind for you to baby sit (Though he'll be a little sad). He's there for you whenever you need him normally, but throwing a baby/kid into the mix reaffirms it more.

💛 Jack won't ask about the baby's father unless you're comfortable bringing it up! All he knows is that it's your ex's kid. If you ever being up that what Ian did, he'll be even more protective of you than normal! Encouraging you to block Ian and change everything on the lease so he can't come back. Jack isn't against haunting Ian behind your back if he doesn't back off.

💛 He'll use your baby as leverage to get you to stay with him and accept his love. He does so much for you, sunshine! He takes care of your kid so you can have time for yourself. Why do you miss Ian when Jack is right there. Jack is basically your kids dad, not Ian. He'll always be there to take care of you both! So why would you ever want to leave him? He'll never leave you! Never cheat on you like Ian did. Can't you see how much better he is for you?

💛 He'll ask about your pregnancy and how it was for you, wanting to know as much as he can. If there were any complications, if you're supposed to eat or avoid certain foods, what foods your baby likes or dislikes. He wants to know as much as he can so he can make sure you're both taken care of

💛 Jack will eventually start getting thoughts about having a family with you, you pregnant with his kid. Forever tied to him through your child. He won't love either kid more or less though! But something about having his own kid with you makes him hard in seconds. He doesn't even know if he can get you pregnant, but he isn't above fucking you senseless to try

whenever I play yandere games for the first time I usually start off with doing the route that gets you killed or hurt the fastest

Its not really a masochist thing its more that I like to test the limit of the game itself

something ive noticed with a ton of yandere games is there's an expected 'buy-in' for the yandere love interest where the game just thinks you're gonna love them no matter what

so by doing the 'bad' choices as fast as possible you see where not only the yandere breaks but the game writer too. its pretty clear when someone writes a bad route completely not expecting this to happen first or even at all depending on the game

Its also fun because sometimes the yanderes are just immediately weird or creepy but other times they're very good at concealing this behavior

one example of this is alan from hatchet man though I tried to do the more disinterested I don't like you route he was sincere and patient enough that I ended up caving and just doing a normal route first.

14 days with you also has very interesting gameplay if you do this harmful route first because ren himself has the kind of meta game knowledge to know you're choosing the bad options and actively tries to nudge you out of it because he doesn't want something bad happening to the pc

john doe is really cool because rather than getting pissed off or turning violent your lack of interest actually makes john lose his interest too! which is something I'm pretty sure I haven't seen from another yandere game since.

the most interesting one for me was sunny day jack because his response to the pc being disinterested is to pull a classic if you don't be with me ill die move. its what makes him one of the more unique yanderes because he turns to false self harm and turns it around that instead of him doing bad you're the one hurting him

I definitely think these bad or worser routes are something that the game devs of yandere games really have to think about because it can be just as fun or just as eye opening as some of the 'nicer' routes and they certainly end up sticking with me if they're well done

Got around to making him in the game, so here’s a Jack Mii for Miitopia for y’all to use I guess-

The tape "Incident 84" probably is a original copy of the show and contains the last episode of the original Sunny Day Jack, aka the one where Jack died/killed (was shot?) while filming. Everything directs that after said incident the producers tried to bury all clues related to it to protect themselves.

(In Jambeebot's drawings there was one with two formers actors of the show in what it seemed an interview or talking with someone who was asking them about the incident and the woman said they didn't let them hold a funeral for Joseph/Jacktor. AND in this drawing his grave seemed improvised God knows where by someone who knew him, no grave per se just a which further proves he didn't get a proper funeral and only the people who worked in the show knew he died at the age 25 under turbulent circumstances.)

So that tape was the only existing one that proved his death/murder, the person who kept it died and somebody donate their things or they get rid of it themselves and that's why Jack was trapped in there.

After all, it contained his death, but also the last moments of his life and who killed him or why he died. The first element his soul could cling to this realm, well, before you.
