Orchids and Oranges: A Yasammy Week Special
Tumblr media
Yasammy week brought to you by @yasammyweek!
Trigger Warning: Minor homophobia (And some tooth rotting fluff and sappy pet names)
Sorry this one was nearly two weeks late, I've been struggling with motivation and I'm slowly coming to terms with having ADHD. Sometimes my brain just won't let me focus on what I want it to, unfortunately. :/ (And a bit of an irl extra update that doesn't really mean much but-- I got a nose piercing a few days ago! Yippee! I love it! It has definitely improved my self image some in terms of boosting my confidence. :D A bit sore, but I decided to write to take my mind off it)
Day 3: Prom Rating: G/PG Summary: Sammy and Yaz have the time of their lives at Prom with their friends… even if a few students aren't accepting of their relationship.
AO3 Version:
Tumblr Version:
“Everyone say cheese!”
”Cheese!”
The cameras clicked, leaving Sammy and her friends slightly dazed by the glares of the flash. The boys were done up in tuxes and ties. Kenji had an excessive amount of gel in his hair and Ben was avidly loosening his seafoam green tie. Darius was, of course, wearing a red tie with faint emblems of various dinosaurs on it.
Brooklynn's hair fell down her shoulders in elegant curls. She wore a strapless black dress with a pink ruffled skirt that fell a little past her knees. Glitter was speckled all over the top, giving it an iridescent glint at certain angles. Her faux diamond heels glinted in the setting sun.
Yaz... Gosh, Yaz was stunning. Her athletic physique fit perfectly in a silver side-shoulder gown with a far less dramatic skirt in comparison to Brooklynn's. A black dress jacket wrapped around her shoulders, the sleeves extending down to her elbows. Matching black flats were just barely noticeable; she said she wouldn't be caught dead wearing heels or anything of the sort. Truthfully, Yaz had preferred to wear her usual tennis shoes-- much to Brooklynn's objection. She had expertly done up Yaz's hair in a high ponytail and curled two strands to frame the sides of her face. The blogger had insisted she could do a flawless smokey eyeshadow effect, but Yaz was comfortable in minimal concealer.
She was gorgeous. It took all the self-restraint Sammy had not to scoop her up and shower her with hugs and kisses. Though she wasn't sure she would appreciate the cherry red lipstick stains on her cheeks. Sammy herself had taken ages prom dress shopping; it took numerous facetime calls with Yaz and Brooklynn to narrow down her specific desires. In the end, she had picked out a red ball gown with a cascading skirt. Pink roses went in a diagonal line down her chest with a few others dotted along the hem of the skirt. Unlike Yaz's, Sammy's dress was long enough to touch the floor and help hide her trusty, comfortable boots. To complete the look, Brooklynn had picked out a pink rose headband.
Their parents were watching them in pride, fawning over their outfits and how "their kids were growing up." Sammy even noticed her father getting misty eyed.
"Woo! Party people! Who's ready to hit the dancefloor??" Kenji boomed, picking Brooklynn up and giving her a little twirl.
Brooklynn giggled exuberantly. "Hey! Quit! You're going to ruin my hair!"
"You of all people would know how important hair is, Kenj," Yaz snorted, wrapping her arm around Sammy. Her heart thudded at the touch.
Kenji set Brooklynn down on the ground. In immediate response, Brooklynn leaned forward and playfully ruffled his slicked back hair.
"I'm so excited! I've always wondered what prom would be like!" Sammy chirped, restlessly shifting her weight from foot to foot. "I mean, is it like all those cheesy high school movies? Will there be drama? Will we break into song?"
"Oh, like High School Musical?" Brooklynn asked.
"I used to love those movies," Kenji added.
"What? High school wasn't at all like those movies," Ben crossed his arms with a raised eyebrow.
Darius chuckled and pat Ben on the shoulder. "Oh, Benjamin. Don't you know? ... We're all in this together."
Ben groaned in disgust as the others burst into laughter.
"Alright, kids. Time to take this show on the road," Mrs. Bowman announced, gesturing a hand to the crew's awaiting limousine. For such a special occasion, their parents had offered they ride in style. This was a night to remember after all!
~
"Ooo! Yaz! Look at that! Or-- look! A photo booth!" Sammy had her arm linked in her girlfriends as the group entered the ballroom floor. The theming of this year's prom was "Moonlight Ball." Stars draped down from the ceiling with a disco ball sparkling in the center like a faux moon. The tablecloths and drapery were speckled with stars and clusters of purples, blues, and blacks to form a miniature galaxy. There were even some colorful mosaic planets that were scattered about the room to mimic the solar system.
"They really outdid themselves with this, huh?" Yaz murmured as she glanced around in awe. Their friends were of similar interest and begun chatting amongst themselves.
Sammy couldn’t contain her enthusiasm as she subtly bounced up and down on her heels. She needed to dance!
“Yaz! Wanna dance?” She chirped giddily.
Yaz blinked. “Me? Dancing? I don’t really know how…”
”It’s easy! Here, I’ll show you!” Sammy whisked Yaz through the crowd until she found enough empty space. She then turned on her heel, focusing in on the upbeat pop music. Definitely not a slow dance by any means! No matter, the Cha Cha Slide is something she'd learned since birth.
”All ya gotta do is follow what the music tells you!” Sammy instructed over the blaring stereos.
”Right foot now!”
Sammy stomped her right foot.
Yaz chuckled, moved to stand by her side, and followed along. It took her a moment, but she was a fast learner. Soon the two were laughing and playfully twirling one another in between the choreographed steps. At the end of the song, Sammy grabbed Yaz around the waist, picked her up, and spun her. The two giggled joyfully. The world seemed to fall away as the music faded. It was just the two of them, content to be in the other’s presence. What could be better than that? And the night was just getting star--
Someone laughed.
Sammy paused and set Yaz down, glancing to her left. A trio of girls their age was staring in their direction, all huddled in a semi-circle with heads bent close together. A blonde said something Sammy couldn't hear over the opening of the next song. Whatever it was caused her friends to burst into giggles, all three of them casting Yaz and Sammy side glances.
Sammy's paradise fell away before her. Were they... laughing at them? Sammy swallowed down the lump forming in her throat. Her cheeks flushed.
"Sammy?" Yaz asked. Her hands were suddenly in Sammy’s. Sammy looked back at Yaz to find her eyes speckled with uncertainty. Yaz always had beautiful eyes…
”It’s nothing!” She lied right through her teeth. Sammy hated lying, especially to Yaz and her friends. It reminded her back to the days where she was spying for Mantah Corp. But the last thing she needed right now was to spoil their night with a probable confrontation. Yaz did have a history of being the queen of sarcasm after all. And Sammy knew all too well she wouldn't hesitate to call someone out for their nasty attitude.
”Maybe we should get some food,” She offered. That wasn’t entirely a lie, she did have a hankering for some delectable prom treats.
”Are you sure? We just got started?” Yaz asked thoughtfully. Sammy felt her scanning her features to try and discern what was actually bothering her.
”Can’t dance our hearts out on an empty stomach,” Sammy pointed out and quickly led her off the dance floor towards the food buffet. The laughter began to fade over the overpowering boom of the stereos, much to her relief.
The buffet table had pretty standard food; chicken nuggets and fries courtesy of the local Chick Fil A, various fruit options, sodas, coffee, waters. But what Sammy was looking forward to the most were the desserts— brownies, trays of cupcakes, loaded chocolate chip cookies, and even some mini ice cream cups nestled inside a cooler. Tonight she needed to satiate her sweet tooth!
The duo waited in line before it was their turn to load up their plates. Sammy piled on her plate until she had formed a miniature mountain of a meal.
“Hey, Sammy. Try this.” Sammy looked over to find Yaz dipping a strawberry in a rich chocolate fountain. She held it up to her. Both Sammy’s hands were currently occupied in trying to steady her ever growing pile of food. She leaned forward and took a sizable bite, careful not to nip Yaz's fingers. Instantly her tase buds were hit with a smooth and tangy, fruity flavor. The chocolate coating was pure bliss.
"Mhmm. Thash purfect," Sammy rambled with a mouth full of food. Yaz laughed and gave her a quick peck on the side of the cheek. Sammy was about to return the gesture when she felt eyes on her. A young man their age was standing in line behind Yaz, a disdainful look in his eyes. Sammy's face fell.
Yaz noticed the shift in expression and began to turn to look over her shoulder. "Oh! Yaz!" She stopped midway and turned to face Sammy. "Why don't I go find us somewhere to sit?" She asked, privately relieved Yaz didn't notice the scornful look they were getting.
"In that mess?" Yaz laughed lightly, glancing over at the packed circular tables. "We'd be lucky to find a place on the floor to sit."
"What? No!" Sammy moved to stand by her side and nudged her shoulder. "We can't get our gowns dirty! Brooklynn would kill us!"
Yaz laughed again, sending little butterflies fluttering around Sammy's heart. The two abandoned the buffet, Sammy leading the charge to find a space for them to sit. All the while, she still felt those eyes on them. How many people were staring at them; were talking about them? Whatever joy she had been feeling began to evaporate like morning mist.
After what felt like ages, Yaz and Sammy finally managed to snag a spot... right next to the table of gossiping girls. Sammy tried her best to ignore them, but she couldn't help but eavesdrop on their conversation as she and Yaz dug into their food.
"... Do you think those two got together because they couldn't find a guy who wanted them?" She caught the brunette snickering.
"Couldn't be me," The blonde replied in faux sympathy.
"It's a shame too. They must've got loads of secret admirers for being famous," A curly haired girl with jet black hair added. "But instead, they turned them down to be with each other."
"Probably just a trauma response given what they've been through," The blonde dismissed. "Things like that are nothing but a phase. It won't last more than a month."
"Is that a bet?"
Sammy felt sick to her stomach. Is that what they thought? What her and Yaz had was... just a phase?
"Sammy? Did you hear me?"
Sammy jolted and turned her attention to Yaz, whom was sitting by her side. Her hand met Sammy's. She flinched and pulled away. Yaz recoiled subtly, not something anyone would notice unless they knew her like she did.
"Are you okay? You've been acting off since we've got here..." She asked. Sammy couldn't tell whether she was being blunt, concerned, or both at this point.
"Yeah! I'm fine!" Sammy lied again. Her heart felt like it was breaking. She wanted to cry. She wanted to scream. But she couldn't. What was the use of causing a scene? This was supposed to be their perfect night.
By the look Yaz was giving her, Sammy could tell she knew she was lying. Yaz opened her mouth, about to say something, but thought better of it. "I'm going to head to the bathroom. Be back soon," She said in a unreadable tone. Sammy's heart split in two.
"Alrighty. I'll be here!" She called as Yaz got up and headed off. The moment she was out of sight, Sammy's shoulders slumped and her bright smile withered. She began to pick at her cupcake with a fork, as impractical as that probably appeared.
"Never thought you'd be one to turn down sugary goodness."
Sammy slightly started in her chair and looked up to see Brooklynn flop down next to her.
"Oof. My feet are beat," She laughed lightly and leaned down to remove her shoes. "The pain of heels, am I right?"
"Yeah," Sammy replied shortly, trying to crack a smile.
Brooklynn was already on high alert, her gaze searching Sammy's features. It was hard to put anything past Brooklynn. That girl had a nose for deciphering the hidden and unknown. "What's up? I thought you'd be out enjoying yourself."
"I'm alright," Sammy lied again. She hated lying.
Brooklynn crossed her arms on the table and leaned forward. "I know that's a lie, Sam. Spill it. Please?"
Sammy took in a deep breath and glanced over her shoulder. The trio of girls weren't paying her any mind now that Yaz was gone. So, she leaned closer to Brooklynn and confessed. "Alright. Truth is... Yaz and I have been getting looks. Some have been whispering behind our backs saying... less than kind things... I didn't want to tell Yaz because, well, this was supposed to be a fun night. I didn't want to start any drama. And I know how some react to people like... us... I just didn't want Yaz getting hurt if someone instigated violence..."
Brooklynn's features softened. "Oh, Sammy... I'm sorry. I-- I get what you mean. It wasn't always easy growing up with two dads. Don't get me wrong, they're amazing parents. But ever since I was a little girl, when I walked down the street with them, I always caught those scornful glances and snide remarks. I never quite understood why until I was older, and even then it still doesn't make sense." She sat back and gave her a gentle smile. "But you know what? It didn't matter. My dads loved each other, and they loved me. No matter what others thought of them, that was always true. And no amount of hate would be able to stop that."
"How did they learn to work through it?" Sammy asked, still absently picking at her dessert. "Those comments... they hurt. I know they shouldn't, and I know I shouldn't listen, but... it doesn't feel good."
"Not everyone you come across in life is going to agree with you," Brooklynn answered after a brief silence. "There's always going to be self-righteous jerks who think they know best. Whatever they say about you, or you and Yaz, let it roll off your back. They don't know you two. They don't know how you built your relationship brick by brick. Your love for one another, it's special. If they can't see that, it's their loss-- not yours. What's important are the people that love and accept you. They're the ones you need to remember in times like this... Remember what I said on the isle? What you and Yaz have is awesome--"
"Let it be awesome," Sammy finished, brushing away tears. Shoot, her mascara was running.
Brooklynn chuckled at that and dug around at the purse dangling by her waist. She pulled out some wipes and a mascara tube, then went to work fixing Sammy's makeup. "Now, if anyone else tonight gives you two any grief... come get us. We've got your back."
"Thank you, Brooklynn," Sammy smiled. Her soul felt a little lighter. Her friends had always been there for her when she needed them most. Of course they'd have her and Yaz's back against adversity. "...Where are the boys at anyways?"
Brooklynn tossed her head towards the dance floor. Sammy glanced over, careful not to move her head too much in case Brooklynn accidentally jabbed her eye with the mascara brush. Kenji, Ben, and Darius were all doing the Macarena on the outskirts of the crowd; Ben accidentally kept hitting Kenji with his long arms. Sammy laughed, her first genuine one in a while.
Once Brooklynn had finished touching up Sammy’s makeup, she sat back and begun slipping on her heels. “Alright then. Go enjoy the rest of the dance with Yaz. You two deserve it.” Her voice raised and her eyes slid towards the trio of girls who had begun staring at her again. “And if anyone tries to ruin your night, I’m sure they wouldn’t appreciate negative publicity on my blog. Brooklanders are some of the biggest Yasammy supporters after all.” Brooklynn’s gaze hardened into a warning, fiery glare.
The trio quickly turned away just in time for Yaz to make her way back to the table. “Hey, Brooklynn. What did I miss?”
”Oh nothing, just a bit of a pep talk and a personal beauty appointment,” Brooklynn answered, giving Sammy a side, confident glance. Her lips curled into a mischievous smirk. “Would you like an appointment too, Yaz?”
”Over my dead body,” Yaz snorted bluntly and crossed her arms.
Sammy and Brooklynn giggled at the response. Just then, Kenji came up to them and set a hand on Brooklynn’s shoulder. “C’mon party people! The fun is that-a-way.” He pointed towards the dance floor.
Brooklynn abandoned her chair and took Kenji’s hand, reaching up a smidge to give him a kiss on the cheek. “Alright, alright, we’re coming.” She turned her head and gave Sammy a quick wink.
Fueled by newly placed passion, Sammy stood up. She did a grand curtsy and extended a hand toward Yaz. “May I have this dance, my gorgeous, witty goddess sent from above?”
Yaz laughed at the cheesiness and blushed as she took Sammy’s hand. “You may, my country strong, beautiful cowgirl…” She leaned forward and whispered, “Sorry, I’m not really good at this pet name stuff.”
Sammy chuckled in response and kissed her on the forehead. “I think it was lovely, mi diosa.”
Yaz’s cheeks were turning as red as a ripe tomato. Sammy couldn’t help but burst into laughter. She’d never seen Yaz so flustered before! It was soooooo cute!!!
Sammy pulled Yaz back onto the dance floor, catching a glimpse of the trio of girls watching them once more.
Let them talk. Let them stare. It didn't matter, not really. Sammy had her family, her friends, and she had Yaz. They were her whole world. And that was all that mattered.

@yasammyweek So I've decided to do another one of these yasammy week things. And I decided to do the second one, which I believe is hurt/comfort. I did one of these yesterday so feel free to check that out as well as my other headcanons. Hope you enjoy.
TW: BLOOD, NIGHTMARE, AND GENERAL SAD THINGS (but has a good ending)
Thunder and lightning shook the sky as Sammy sprinted as fast as she could through the forest of Isla Nublar. Her heart pounding so hard in her chest she thought it would give out on her, she couldn't breathe, couldn't see more than a few feet ahead of her, and couldn't hear anything over the rain constantly coming down, hitting so hard it stung her back. But out of the darkness a faint light shone through the rain and pitch black sky. The camp....if she could make it to the camp she'd be safe.
She sprinted on and on as hard and fast as she could, getting closer and closer until she finally made it to the base, but something was wrong...where was Kenji, Brooklyn, Ben, Yaz, Darius? They weren't in the ground waiting for her, or in the treehouse. She looked everywhere for them but nobody was there.
*snap*
Something broke behind her, she flipped around only to see two red eyes, massive white fingers, attached to massive white claws, and Yasmina Fadoula pinned to the ground, covered in blood and mud, with the claws of the Indominous Rex digging into her back.
Y: Sammy....help me......please.....
Yaz was silently sobbing, begging to be helped, and Sammy wanted to, but something was holding her back, holding her shoulders were three hands, one dark skinned, one tan skinned, and one pale skinned. But they weren't attached to anything, blood dripping down the arms and onto the floor. Sammy was horrified, backing away and trying to find Yaz. But all she saw was the claws of the Indominous piercing her best friends back and dragging her away while she screamed and cried, desperately trying and failing to get away. Then it was silent, deadly silent.
Sammy had just seen her best friend die right in front of her, all her friends gone, except for one.
B: Why didn't you help us Sammy? We needed you and you weren't there. Why Sammy? Don't you care? It was your fault we got trapped here in the first place, but you couldn't even bother to keep us safe?
Sammy stood horrified as she watched Brooklyn, a limp figure in the jaws of a T-Rex, speak to her in a monotone voice and unblinking eyes. Covered in blood and dirt, tear stains visible on her face, reaching an extended hand to Sammy, beckoning her to come closer.
Brooklyn grabbed Sammy's arm and yanked her in close, for a minute having a clear expression of anger, fear, sadness and pain. Inches from Sammy's face, Brooklyn spoke.
B: You are the worst person on this planet, we supported you, forgave you for stealing my phone and getting us stuck here, and yet you couldn't even be here to help us? Kenji, Ben, Darius, and me are all dead because of you!
Sammy was able to speak for the first time, sobbing and holding onto Brooklyn's hand and apologizing as desperately as she could.
Sammy: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, I was...I....I just... I didn't want....
B: What? Didn't mean for anything to happen to us? HA! A little late for that Sammy, isn't it? You know the saddest thing? Yaz was holding out hope for you, convinced you would save us, that you would be there when we needed you.....it's pathetic really, that girls love and admiration in you so strong that she bet her life on it.....and you let her down.
Sammy: No.....
B: YASMINA IS DEAD BECAUSE OF YOU!
Sammy fell to her knee's, defeated. Brooklyn was right, SHE was the reason her friends were dead, SHE was the reason they were stuck on the island in the first place....it was all her fault.
A black figure seemed to appear out of nowhere as Sammy sat on her knees in the rain. As the girl looked up, the lanky, spiky, figure was all too familiar for her, the Scorpius Rex. The creature from hell raised its tail and extended it's poisonous spikes. Sammy knew what was coming, somewhere in her memory she recognized it, and accepted it. Sammy closed her eyes, puffed out her chest, and lifted her arms into the air, as she felt a sharp pain in her side, and the world faded around her.
Yasmina Fadoula sat beside the hospital bed where her wife lay, scarred, bloody and bruised. Yaz had been at a contracting job (she was a carpenter) and was having an amazing day. She was planning on picking up some flowers and a special order from Sammy's favorite fast-food place for the couples 3rd wedding anniversary. She had invited Kenji, Brooklyn, Ben, and Darius down for the weekend and they were all planning to go on a special camping trip, where Yaz had rented a portable movie projector kit, and had ordered everyone to pick out their favorite movie to watch. That's when she got the call, Sammy had been in a car accident, swerved off the road to avoid a dog, and hit a telephone pole. It wasn't looking good, and she needed to come to the hospital right away.
Yaz had broken about 16 traffic violations to get to the hospital, and almost took out a handicap sign trying to park her truck. She raced into the hospital, to find Brooklyn standing outside the door to Sammy's room, and stopped her from entering. Before Yaz could speak, Brooklyn did.
B: Yasmina, I know you're worried, and you have every right to be, Sammy's looking rough. But she needs you to be calm, if you get worked up, EVERYONE will get worked up, and that won't help anybody, so I need you to take a breath, calm down, and slowly walk into the room with me, ok?
Y:......ok.
Yaz and Brooklyn walked into the room and it took Yaz a lot of self control not to freak out. Sammy was wrapped in bandages, hooked to a heart monitor, with her chest slowly rising and falling, soaked in a pinkish red. Ben, Darius, Kenji, and Brooklyn sat with her for 3 hours before anyone said anything.
Y: Why did this have to happen, why her? I was so excited for tonight, the movies, the food, the surprise, of COURSE this had to happen to her......like we haven't been through enough already.
Ben: Surprise? What surprise, Sammy knew about the camping trip and everything already right?
Y: Yeah....she did, but that's not what I was surprising her with.
Yaz sat back in the chair that she was sitting in, and everyone noticed that her stomach had seemed to have gotten a little bigger, but not from food.
B: Yaz.....are you....
Y: Yeah....4 months along. Sammy always wanted kids, and for obvious reasons we couldn't "technically" have our own, so I found a good donor through a reputable company and....
D: Yaz that's amazing, Sammy's going to be so excited, once she wakes up........
The room went silent after that, because there in lies the problem, they didn't know if Sammy WOULD wake up, the doctor was hopeful, but remained realistic, the crash did a number on Sammy, and was very clear the only reason Sammy even MADE it to the hospital was because she was wearing a seatbelt, and only hit the pole going about 30.
Sammy was unconscious, nobody was sure if Sammy could hear them or not, because she showed no signs of moving. But Sammy could hear them, and she knew if it was the last thing she did, she WOULD wake up, and WOULD meet her child, whatever it takes.....
6 days it took Sammy to wake up, 6 days of nothing but worrying from her friends, and a near heat attack for Yaz when Sammy's heart monitor started to speed up, Sammy's heart beat apparently skyrocketed for no reason. Turns out the heart monitor had a malfunction and Sammy was perfectly fine, Yaz was not. Brooklyn almost put the nurse in a hospital bed of her own, and DEMANDED the hospital check on Yaz and the baby. They checked on the baby.
When Sammy had finally woken up, she was greeted by her wife, friends, and smiling hospital staff. Yaz immediately asked how she was doing, and Sammy had assured her that she was okay.
Sammy: All I want to know is how "she's" doing.
Sammy said as she gently and weakly put her hand on Yaz's stomach. Yaz's eyes widened in surprise, before smiling warmly at her wife, and reassuring her that "she's" ok.
Y: So, you think it's a girl....I've always wanted a girl.
S: Me too. I'll love she or he no matter what, but a daughter has always been my go-to when I think of having a baby.
Sammy beckoned Yaz closer, and whispered something in her ear. The two women smiled and looked at Brooklyn, which made Brooklyn a little nervous, but they called her over.
S: Brooklyn, you are one of our best friends, an incredibly important person in our lives, and have been nothing but supportive of us since we've been together, and we wanted to ask you......
Y: Would you like to be our child's godparent?
Brooklyn was stunned, shocked, and so happy. She immediately accepted, and thanked them for the incredible honor. The entire group hugged and talked for the rest of the time Sammy was in the hospital.
5 months later, it was Yaz in the hospital bed, when the accepted Isabella Fadoula into the world. And it just so happened she was born on the day they returned home to their families. A consistent reminder of the best days of their lives.
Sorry if it's not the best, I'm tired and just threw this together on the spot, but I hope you enjoyed nonetheless

Yasammy Week Day 7 (Free Day)
I love an AU guyz!! I reached 100% neuron activation while drawing this
I imagine them both leading separate pirate crews and they’re like rival captains but Yaz takes it way too seriously and Sammy thinks they’re basically dating (and she’s real for that)
((Sorry I’m late with this but happy Yasammy week! It’s been great seeing everyone’s art and participating in this for the first time <3

@yasammyweek Ok I guess this is a thing that exists, so I'm gonna contribute to it. Today's theme is a wedding, so I'm gonna write something that relates to that. This kinda caught me off guard but I'm gonna try my best. Enjoy
It has been about 8 years since Yaz and Sammy had "officially" gotten together, If you ask them they'll say they started REALLY dating after they made it back home, an agreement they made when they were still stranded on Mantacorp Island, in case either one (or both) of them hadn't made it, but basically everyone else agrees it was after they both brought their feelings to light. Either way it had been about 8 years, but for the past week, Yaz had been acting a little....skittish.
Yazmina was a woman of focus, commitment, and sheer flipping will. She had survived almost a year on an island full of dinosaurs, while having a sprained ankle for two of those months. She had faced down the Scorpius Rex, the Mosasaurs, and a really ticked off Galimimus (long story, but the dino had it coming). After all that, the almost dying nearly every day, why on gods green earth would a small wooden box with a diamond ring inside make her so nervous. She wouldn't even be the one receiving it, but the conclusion this poor nervous girl came to, is that the reaction of the person she wanted to give the ring to was what caused her nerves to shoot up. What would Sammy do? Cry, laugh, run, say no? All these possibilities were making Yaz more nervous than it would if she just asked Sammy the damn question "Will you marry me?". There's no reason for her to be this nervous right? I mean, the two of them have already been as intimate as you can get with another person, multiple times, so there was no grand surprise afterwards, no pressure to hold up to any "expectations" except of course actually showing up for the wedding....the wedding, the music, the people, the dresses, all the things that weddings involved made Yaz feel even more nervous. She had always considered herself the quote-un qoate "man" of the relationship, and as such she felt it necessary to perform the usual "man" rolls, she opened the doors to restaurants and vehicles for Sammy, made sure Sammy's truck was safe before she drove somewhere, and besides all that, had always gotten along better with Sammy's father, brothers, and nephews, than she had her mother in law, sister in laws, and nieces, though they all still got along well, but she had always found herself gravitating towards the guys, and had actually went to Sammy's father for advice on what to do for their first official date. But unfortunately, with Yaz fulfilling that role (that she was perfectly happy in, Sammy as well), that means it was up to her to propose. Great 😑.
Not really sure what to do, Yaz had chosen to try and distract herself from the thoughts racing in her head by going to lunch with Darius, Brooklyn, and Ben. Sammy was working and couldn't go, but insisted Yaz go and give them all a hug for her, which she had. As they sat down, the rest of the group noticed Yaz looked a little down, not that she was super bubbly to begin with, but she usually had more energy than this.
B: Yaz, are you ok?
Y: Yeah....I'm fine.
(obviously not fine)
D: Yeah sure, ok skip the BS and tell us what's up so we can help.
B: Dude, a little sensitivity would be nice.
D: What? She obviously has something that's bothering her, I'm just trying to figure out what?
B: Yeah but you can't just ASK, what if it was something sensitive?
Ben: Sensitive..... something kinda like a....ring...maybe?
Ben looked over at Yaz, who was now staring at Ben. And he instantly regretted it, Yaz had tears in her eyes, her cheeks red, and trying to compose herself as to not have a breakdown in the middle of a shopping mall food court. Yaz reached into her pocket, pulled out a small wooden box, and slid it across the table.
Y: Yeah, it's a ring. But I don't need it, it's not like I'd ever have a possibility of using it anyway....so take it.
She wiped her eyes and took a shaky breath and put a 20 on the table, asked them to pay for her food, and went to her car to go home.
Yaz made it to her truck, but didn't open it. Hand on the handle she looked at the reflection in the window, and it was a sad, sorry sight. Red in the face, tears running down her cheeks, crying like a 5 year old that had just broken her toy. What was she supposed to do? Go back to Sammy, the person that made her so happy, and dump all this on to her? And that's when the realization struck Yaz like a horse hoof to the chest, the reason Yaz didn't want to propose, wasn't because she didn't want to spend the rest of her life with Sammy, it's that she didn't want Sammy to be stuck with her. She's always been self conscious about herself, and in some ways that's a good thing, keeps a person humble, but it also can be a real pain for self esteem. Would Sammy WANT to be stuck with her for the rest of their lives, till death does them part? Why would someone like her, a beautiful, intelligent, friendly, girl from Texas want to spend the rest of her life with an introverted, relatively speaking average looking, sad nerd like her? There wasn't one, at least not one that Yaz could think of. So, she decided she wouldn't propose, and wouldn't put that burden on Sammy, so if at any time Sammy wanted to leave, she could. As corny as it sounds she'd rather Sammy be happy without her, then sad with her.
Yaz hadn't realized how long she had been standing with her hand on the truck handle, hadn't realized how long she had been crying, and hadn't realized how long her friends had been standing there, until Brooklyn had very gently put her arm on Yaz's shoulder, and was looking at her with so much concern that it almost made Yaz start crying again, but even if she wanted to, she couldn't, she was all dried up.
B: Yaz, we're so sorry, we didn't mean to push, we were just worried about you. I wasn't going to say anything, but the whole reason we came down was that Sammy was concerned about you. She said you'd been acting sad and wanted us to get you out of the house to see if you'd feel better. She's really worried, she was actually starting to think you had gotten tired of spending so much time around her.
Y: What? No, I....I didn't mean...I could never.....
B: Yaz, please tell us what's the matter, all we want to do is help you.
So Yaz did, Yaz told them EVERYTHING, every insecurity. All the hopelessness and sadness came out in one big, frankly depressing, story (including everything she said in her head, read above). At the end, Yaz was just sitting sadly on the tailgate of her truck, her friends sitting with her, looking for lack of a better term, dumbfounded and sad. They had all known Yaz had insecurities, who didn't, but they had no idea it ran so deep.
Y: So that's why I can't propose. I care about her, and I care enough to let her go.....I don't want to but.....
Ben: Yaz, kinda crazy question here, but have you... Idk......maybe mentioned ANY of this to Sammy, at all? Do you have any idea if she wants to get married?
Y: No, but I don't want to burden anything on her. And why would she want to marry ME anyways?
Nobody had noticed the black car that had pulled in the parking lot an hour before, and nobody had noticed the driver sneaking over and hiding behind the car beside them, listening to Yaz's entire story, every word since Brooklyn, Darius, and Ben had come out to comfort their sad friend. And nobody noticed the Texas girl hiding behind some strangers car, trying her best not to cry, and wanting to do nothing else but hug not just the girl she's been dating for 8 years, but her business partner, her other dog mom, and her best friend. But the little Texan girl couldn't stand it any longer and decided to set the record straight.
Sam: Yazmina Fadoula, are you kidding me?
Sammy stepped out from behind the car she was hiding behind, and gave a heart attack to the entire group sitting on the tailgate. Yaz started to get up but Sammy in no uncertain terms gave her a look that said sit back down......Yaz sat back down.
Sammy: So let me get this straight....the reason you've been acting depressed all week, the reason you come to bed later and wake up earlier than normal, why you aren't eating as much and acting super shy, is because you wanted to propose? And was worried I would laugh in your face, or reject you, or not want to be with the girl that I've been with for 8 years??
Y: Um....yes? Look it's not you Sammy, it's me...I was just....
Sammy: Oh I know, I heard the whole conversation, basically everything. I came her to pick up some food to surprise you, and I see you crying and looking at the truck, you didn't even see me drive by. I was gonna talk to you, but I saw them coming over to you, and figured they'd be better at getting you to open up.....guess I was right. I'm gonna be honest Yaz, why didn't you talk to me? We're a team, you're supposed to be able to trust me, and I know that's selfish that I just WANT you to trust me, but we've known each other for almost 10 years, even before we started dating......is it me? Am I driving you away, am I being too over bearing, I just wanted to help you, I didn't mean to be too much.
Now Sammy was crying, and Yaz felt like the world's biggest a**hole, beating herself up internally for not thinking about how this would affect Sammy. She knew Sammy was sensitive, and tuned into people's emotions, so she definitely knew Yaz was upset, but wanting to respect her privacy, hadn't pushed the issue. Yaz felt awful.
Sammy: You know the worst part about this, Yaz? This entire time I was scared you were getting sick of me....I thought you were seeing someone else.
Well if Yaz thought she couldn't feel any worse, she just got proven wrong.
Y: Sammy.....you thought that.....why would....
Sammy: What? See someone else?.....Yaz I heard everything you said, and the entire time I was wondering the same thing you were. Wondering why you'd want to be with ME? I'm just some yee-haw Texan rodio, banjo playing, chubby, middle of nowhere farm girl and there's a million girls just like me within like 20 miles of just like me, except prettier and cooler. I was scared to death that the only reason you were with me is because we were stuck on the island and once you had more people to choose from.....you'd leave. Yasmina I would LOVE to marry you, of course I would, but I still don't really understand why it'd be ME you'd pick out of everyone else. You're beautiful and smart and ACTUALLY talented, you have skills that are actually cool and unique, unlike me who can do farm things yeah, but so can everyone else.
Yaz sat with her mouth hanging open, in awe of that one, her girlfriend had the same insecurities she had, and two, that Sammy thought of herself like that. Yaz couldn't understand why the girl she was so worried about proposing to had never brought these issues up to her before. Yaz decided there and then that damn the consequences, whatever her future had in store for her, Yaz was going to make sure Sammy never had to worry that Yaz would leave her again. She walked up to Sammy and kissed her, a long kiss full of love and warm feelings that made butterflies fly in both of the girls chests.
Y: Sammy, I'm so so so so so so so sorry that I EVER made you worried about me leaving, ever made you feel insecure about yourself. With our friends and God as my witness I will do everything I can to make sure you never feel like this again. Brooklyn.......can I have my ring.
Sammy opened her eyes wide, Ben and Darius gasped and Brooklyn smiled as she handed Yaz the ring.
Y: With this ring I promise to be with you forever, for every sad day, when it shines, rains, or snows. Through every up and down, left or right, whatever happens I want this ring to symbolize how much I care about you... Sammy Gutierrez, can I put this ring on your finger.
Everyone was crying now, their friends, and some random people in the parking lot.
Sammy: Of course you can, but I have one request......Don't call me Gutierrez anymore.....it's Fadoula now.
Yaz smiled, slipped on the ring, and grabbed Sammy by the hips and hoiseted her up off the ground so they could look at each other, Sammy's legs wrapped around Yaz's hips and her arms rested on her shoulders. The parking lot whistled and hollered, horns honking and lights flashing to celebrate the couple.
Sammy: Hey Yaz?
Y: Yes Sammy?
Sammy: I think the chicken thawed in the back of my car.
Everyone laughed, and Brooklyn, Darius, and Ben all drove home with Sammy and Yaz to stay the night. Brooklyn was thankful that Yaz had soundproofed her and Sammy's bedroom wall, and Yaz kept her promise and made sure that Sammy knew every bit of her was as beautiful to Yaz as anything else.
They went to the town office the next day and made it official, and Sammy bought Yaz a ring.
Woooo, that was a long one, I hope everyone enjoys my contribution to @yasammyweek. See y'all later
