(Who are not so innocent.) A mighty death knell to ring out over the West, echoing his name and his sacrifice, his final deed to all who would hear. Yes. Awesome.

That is, until he regains consciousness standing over his own body as some sort of damned spirit. Jesus wept.

Now the only one who can see and hear him is Red Harvest. The least conversational person in the entire group. And his ridiculous horse Wild Jack, of course. He’s seeing dead people … well.. OTHER dead people. Creepy ones that seem to be after him. There’s a coyote that’s NOT a coyote. And owl that MAY be Death. (And very angry with him.) Spirit Lights that want to boss him around. Matthew Cullen. Teddy Q weepin’ like a widowed bride. And apparently … apparently … a scruffy Mexican outlaw that had much different feelings toward Faraday than he ever imagined.

Really. What the hell?

Varaday - Slow Dancing

@flufftober Day Two! Also, the first alternate prompt. I was informed a tango could in fact be classified as a slow dance, so I took a chance and rolled the dice on this one.

Day Two: Slow Dancing

“May I have this dance?”

Vasquez nearly laughed out loud at his husband’s question, giving the man an amused look.

“Why bother asking, guero? You know the answer is yes,” Vasquez replied as he took Joshua’s offered hand, letting the redhead pull him to his feet and towards the dance floor with some of the other wedding guests. 

Jake and Laura’s big day had finally arrived, and while the barn wasn’t nearly as packed as it had been during Joshua and Vasquez’s wedding, there was enough of a crowd to keep Billy’s servers occupied. 

“Hey, my ma did try to raise me as a gentleman,” Joshua defended himself with a faux hurt look. “Some of it stuck.”

“Well, she succeeded,” Vasquez told him. 

Joshua grinned and spun the brunet around.

“Where did you learn to dance, anyways?” Vasquez asked once Joshua pulled him back close.

“My mom,” Joshua said, quietly. “She was one of the best ballroom dancers, back in her day. She taught me when I was a kid, and Maria, too.”

“And then Alena’s a dancer, too,” Vasquez mused. “Did she… she never had a chance to meet her, did she?" 

"Nope,” Joshua answered, shrugging loosely. His brow furrowed, “Mom died before she knew about Allie, I think. Not sure… to be honest, those years were kind of a blur, for me, between everything going on.”

Vasquez let out a noncommittal hum. The music shifted from a slow waltz to something with a bit more tempo.

“What else did your mother teach you?” Vasquez queried, and Joshua smiled. It was full of mischief and heat, making Vasquez’s pulse quicken. 

“Little of everything, querido,” Joshua drawled as he shifted his grip from hand and waist to take both of Vasquez’s hands and pull him close. “Think you can keep up?”

Vasquez narrowed his eyes, “Try me, guerito.”

Joshua’s smile only widened, and he placed his right foot up against the inside of Vasquez’s left, applying just enough leading pressure for Vasquez to get the hint and extend his leg out. The two held the pose for a moment, staring at each other, tension building between them…

Then, Vasquez was stepping away, only for Joshua to grip his hand firmly and spin him, pulling him back in so that they were flush back to front. The music built up in tempo as they continued to dance some form of a tango. Across the floor and through other couples, the two kept their attention solely on one another. 

The music reached its crescendo before fading out. The couple stilled, staring directly into one another’s eyes, before startling as a round of applause filled the air. Joshua’s ears went red at the cheers they were being met with, and Vasquez couldn’t help but laugh at his embarrassment.

“Not used to having all eyes on you, eh, guero?”

“Shut it,” Joshua grumbled. He cast Vasquez a sideways glance, “Where did you learn to dance, though?”

Vasquez smiled; coyote sly as another song started.

“Dance with me again, carino, and I might tell you.”

This time, Joshua laughed. 

“Well, how can I refuse a request like that?”
