i think the reason these 'soft reveals' work so great because because in a darker universe, a universe made in darkseid's image, you expect things to be things to be the worst, the most miserable they could possibly be.

and yet, its in this universe that bruce and kal get to experience life with their parents.

even diana, taken from her mother and sisters as a baby and cast into literal hell, finds the love of a mother there.

despite everything, they experienced that love. despite everything, there's hope.

So, I wanted to combine the absolutely insane shenanigans fandom has yj getting into in space for months at a time with the fact that actually none of their guardians are as terrible/neglectful as they seem based on their absence from the narrative. (It's just that there are No Adults Allowed in the kids' book. They couldn't make them all orphans in the grand tradition of kids' fiction everywhere, so they just ignored the adults when convenient.)

Which means I need a way for them to spend months in space without anyone knowing, but also not have them absent long enough to ring any alarm bells.

Solution: take full advantage of the fact that time is Messed Up in comics. (7+ Christmases in 3-4 years anyone? One year time skip where not everyone ages a full year?) YJ can be in space for 8 months and it's only, let's go with two weeks, for their guardians.

Mind you: THEY STILL DON'T TELL ANYONE!

So you can get the scene years later where it's like:

JL: How do you know that alien race/language/solar system/interstellar legal code? Why are you citizens/married/ambassadors/boogiemen/deities on this random planet?

YJ: We spent 8 months hitchhiking. Stuff went down.

JL: ...there are no 8 month gaps unaccounted for. The longest we can come up with was two weeks, four if you're all really good at faking things.

Like how people were all pissy about the retcon where she didn’t want to kill Nightcrawler as a baby. Saying that wanting to keep her baby and have a family ruined her character.

Yeah she’s evil, but it’s not because she doesn’t care about anyone, her entire fucking thing is that she cares too much. Her character has always been that she wants mutants everywhere to be liberated and free, and will stop at nothing to get that. Yes she’s selfish and mean but she’s not pure evil. Yes she’s hurt the people she loves but it’s not on purpose, it’s always either because she was scared and trying to save herself or because she genuinely believed it was for the greater good.

She’s shown again and again that she genuinely cares for people, that she loves her family and mutant-kind as a whole and only wants what’s best for them, even if her view on what is best is fucked up.

She’s a complex fucking character and honestly the more mysogynistic thing is to want a bland and evil femme fatale character with no motivations.
