I don't know if there's much else I can add to this, but I find it wild that we're celebrating players putting themselves in potentially seriously damaging positions to play. If England had lost, the same people praising her would have dragged her name through the mud. Probably would be saying that she shouldn't be so selfish or delusional or something else along those lines.

I have to wonder if LJ was fully conscious of the decision to play in a final while still coming off an injury. Was it really of her own volition or a feeling of pressure to play despite it?

I think also sometimes we have to understand that player's desire to play is detrimental to their health and safety and even if they really really want to play, we should not let them play. Not because they're not good enough, but because their health and safety comes first even at the expense of not letting them do their passion for a while. Aitana Bonmati would be the perfect example from this tournament. Literally just days out of the hospital and she was thrown into the tournament. It just felt like there was no consideration for her as a human being or her future outside of football, and her being the football obsessed genius she is of course isn't going to turn down playing time.

I'm not saying there's any person at fault (but once any money comes into the system, player safety usually takes a backseat), but putting players in positions to chose between winning and potentially causing permanent damage to themselves sounds pretty wrong to me.

I think it's mainly cuz she's got a story to go with it. She scored the winning goal last EUROS that won us the final. This season she has a suffering story at City, revival at Arsenal, wasn't on the initial selection for the EUROS but got herself in, was on the verge of quitting football, etc. Additionally, she has a signature for her penalties and after her stat of having a faster pen than any PL goal is a p cool thing that people latch on to.

I have an honest question. Why is Kellys penalty so special in comparison to the others taht converted? Because she was last? That's so stupid lol

So...I did a thing.

If anyone is interested, I spent the last 6-7 months tracking AWFC's game and player statistics across all competitions and compiled them into a google sheet, so this is for all of you on here. Can I get this all online? Yes. But the sites have a habit of separating by competitions and I don't believe that gives a full overview of how the season went. So yeah.

Still evolving some stuff for a separate spreadsheet for next season (hoping to start expanding to include more teams), might add or subtract (e.g. separate duels to ground and aerial cuz now I know they need separate skills) some things but we'll see how it goes.

I have a record of AWFC's last 5 years, but the only in depth one is for the 2024/25 season. I'm hoping to expand the project by another 2 or 3 teams next season and eventually get it to include national teams as well, but if anyone's interested in helping out it would be great to know.

people crashing out saying 'England didnt deserve to win' and yeah looking at the stats they didnt but football is football - if you dont actually use the power you have in the game to win and then start to result to flopping and crying to get free kicks at what point do you go 'yeah nah, you had your chances and you blew it - England deserved it'?.

i was thinking Spain would win but kept hopes for England but Spain didnt wanna use their advantage and actually score more than one goal - thats on them not England. England locked in on defence, kept trying and fought tooth and nail - example lucy bronze playing the whole tournament with a fracture tibia and then cooking her knee in the final. England mentality is 'never done' and they showed that - the fought, they cried, battled through injuries and kept going to win.

you cant dismiss Spain inability to score with 22 shots at goal, nearly double the passing rate and possession - they didnt capitalise and thats on them.

dont dismiss Englands win cause statistically they didnt win it, their gameplay and ability to use any chances to win it, won it for them.

this is coming from a non english/spanish fan - dont blame the game, blame their lack of capitalisation on chances.

ps - the flopping, diving and crying for free kicks still irks me and i hate when ANY player does it but jesus it started to get like really annoying tbh

This is what many of us were afraid of. Yes, women's sports is growing, but the toxic culture of men's sports is infiltrating. Racism, sexism, and homophobia only skims the surface.

This is not the first case of discrimination I've seen but this hit me. It's not a league match, this is on the international stage. This isn't coming from rival clubs (which by the way, the discrimination happening there is insane as well), this is coming from other English people. Fellow countrymen and women.
