Happy Birthday Bay Ridge! Today in 1853, residents of Yellow Hook in the township of New Utrecht assembled at the district school house (District School No. 2) and voted to rename their village from Yellow Hook (established in 1675) to “Bay Ridge.” The change was prompted by several outbreaks of yellow fever in the area, and residents didn't want people to associate "Yellow Hook" with "yellow fever." The name Bay Ridge was suggested by James Weir, a local florist, who thought the name was a more appropriate description of the area. Below is a rendering of Bay Ridge as it looked in 1870. It was first published in 1943.
