Project 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is my final publication. My typography design continues the philosophy of the designer I chose "Less is more." The overall tone is grayish.
I have never tried the design of publications before, and this attempt made me very excited. I’m afraid I’m not doing well and I don’t know what the project3 publication looks like, but Ben gave us a lot of good suggestions in the classroom, and showed us many examples to answer our doubts.

Week 12
Last Lecture
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the last Lecture. The speech summarizes what Andy and Karen have been talking about throughout the semester. From the beginning of squeezing the plasticine to the back, I talked about various sports and the development of art and culture. My favorite is the 80s and 90s design. I learned a lot in lecture, which is very meaningful to me.

★I designed my cover this week. I purposely depicted a photo of the designer on my cover. I really like this photo. Ludwig Mies van der rohe sits on a chair he designed (Barcelona chair) and does his favorite thing, which is smoking. The background of this cover is also a building designed by ludwig Mies van der rohe (Illinois Institute of Technology Chapel of St. Savior.)

Week 10
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week's course is to continue to Project3. I wrote my five questions, which are all my own curiosity about the architectural designer.
1. You are one of the greatest architects of the 20th century. Do you have faced any difficulties as a designer? How did you overcome these difficulties?
2. Mr Mies, as we all know, your design is very famous, such as the Barcelona chair and many architectures, what are the most important things when you design?
3. As an architectural designer, what do you think of architecture?
4. Will you design all the works according to the requirements of customers?
5. Do you have a favourite designer?

In this week's course, Ben and we discussed postmodernism and punk culture. Punk rock shattered the challenged the status quo and continued to impact all generations of youth and culture. Punk inspired an entire generation of filmmakers, poets, photographers, fashion designers and graphic artists. Ben introduced us to monks and other combinations.

Week8
Lecture
In this week's speech, we learned about futurism. Futurism was an artistic and social movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century. Futurist painting used elements of neo-impressionism and cubism to create compositions that expressed the idea of the dynamism, the energy and movement, of modern life.

Week 8
This week’s course is to continue the research of project3, Born in Germany in 1886, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe broke new ground with his architectural designs. He started out as a draftsman before striking out later on his own. During World War I, Mies served in the German military. He then became a well-known architect in Germany, creating such structures as the German Pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona Exposition. In the late 1930s, Mies emigrated to the United States. There he created such well-known Modernist works as the Lake Shore Drive Apartments and the Seagram Building. By the mid-1920s, Mies had become a leading avant-garde architect in Germany. He was a member of the radical artistic organization Novembergruppe and later joined the Bauhaus movement. Founded by Walter Gropius , the Bauhaus movement embraced socialist ideals as well as a functional philosophy about art and design. (The Nazis later found the work of Bauhaus to be degenerate, however, and the group shut down under political pressure.) He died in 1969. system I’m paying more and more respect for Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s research, “Architecture epitomises the human being’s spatial confrontation with his environment; it expresses how he asserts himself in it and how he manages to master it.”

Week 7
Lecture
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The theme of this week's lecture is Bauhaus. The Bauhaus is a very influential design institute in Germany. The Bauhaus movement had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography. Figure 4 is a schematic diagram of the Bauhaus University course itself. The course this week has a lot to do with the architectural designer Ludwing Mies van der Rohe I chose. I was shocked by the impact of this school. I learned a lot from this course and it was very helpful for my research.

Week7
In this week's course, we started project3 "Ask me anything!" project3 What we need to do is: An interview of 5 questions with a historically significant artist, architect, designer, object or movement, presented as a digital publication. You will use your own words along with historical images of/from the person/object/movement. I identified my designer: Ludwing Mies van der Rohe. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect. Mies sought to establish his own particular architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. He created his own twentieth-century architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and simplicity. His design works are: Chicago Federal Complex, Farnsworth House, 860–880 Lake Shore Drive, Seagram Building, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, National Gallery, Berlin... He always said: "less is more" and "God is in the details"

Week 6
Lecture
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lecture's topic this week is: Page space and beyond. The lecture introduced several old books about layout space. The textbook in Figure 2 is analyzing various layouts. These textbooks are part of the modernist teaching method. The lecture also talked about: Empty space=part of the design. This sentence touched me. A good layout design can make the reader's reading process easier and more fun and comfortable.

Week 6
This week’s course is about fonts and typefaces. A typeface is the overall design of lettering; the design can include variations, such as extra bold, bold, regular, light, italic, condensed, extended, etc. Each of these variations of the typeface is a font. In the course, Ben gave us the most common font, let us make changes, I need to change the font on the number, which is very interesting. I found that different fonts will change people's feelings.

Week 5
Lecture
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week's lecture, the lecture talked about the industrialization of printing. It mainly tells the origin and development of the printing industry. Figure 3 is a laborious and slow way of making books. After a series of research and development, the steam-powered printing machine in Figure 4 was invented, as well as the development of letter paper. These designs are amazing.

For project one, we need to create open questions about design. The question I chose is: How does design influence our culture? Because I couldn't go out, I found some materials in my apartment to create this design. For this problem, the first thing I thought about was how to add different cultures to my design. So I found some special materials, and then I thought about how to make my design more unique, so I chose to express each word with a color, and my letters are irregular. I used white paper as my background to make it easier to change the background and cutout in Photoshop.

This is my final work. I connected them together using photoshop, and added a solid background to make the whole design not too messy. I learned a lot of Photoshop knowledge in this project, which is very helpful for my future study.

This is our last face-to-face class before the online class. We did some very interesting activities. The teacher gave us some plasticine. We need to shape some shapes by pressing. Then the teacher asked us to use wooden sticks to make the texture. For example, write your own name on plasticine, or communicate with classmates by lettering on plasticine. Finally, we can draw a picture on the plasticine, hang it on the wall after painting, and students can appreciate each other. The difficulty in this activity is that we need to finish it within the prescribed time. We learned to work hard to complete our tasks in different situations.
