the final chapters of orv to me are like this. youre feeling tired and insecure and your friend invited you to a party later tonight but you think they'll probably have more fun without you. so you fake sick and don't go. and you do that often enough with enough friends that you look back at your life and realize you never took a single person up on a single offer. and then you die and god hands you a big book and you open it and its full of every single time someone wished you were there. every single person who wanted to be with you longer, every old friend and passing acquaintance who wished they still knew you. every single person who you could have built a life with and didn't, and their life was colder as a result. and god says here is proof that you were loved and you say what do i do with this now. its too late. i missed it all. and god puts her hand on your shoulder and says you're not too late at all. the invite is still open. we're still here.

I've been thinking about what bothers me most about the orv live adaptation, and my conclusion is the concept of Theseus' ship. (of course, it's not just the orv la that this applies to, but I think that's the most egregious example as of late)

I feel like the adaptors/writers/whatever try to frame it as, "oh, this is just a tiny wooden plank that we replaced" and "the oars were moldy or whatever so we got new ones that were easier to use" and ultimately replaced every single piece of the ship that they didn't like (for whatever reason), and just left the general somewhat indistinct shape of the original ship.

But like, don't you understand? Every single part of the ship you replaced told a story I loved in it's entirety. I loved those planks, I loved that stupid rusty nail, and I loved the oars that creaked every time I used them. You clearly never loved this ship (and this story) as it was, and you saw a profitable story that it "could become". And for that, I hope your pillow is always uncomfortably warm on either side, and you stub your toe on a lego piece every morning.

It feels like when you take a very warm and cozy vintage house and renovate it into one of those grey and beige minimalist homes. Like yes, it is a home, but it isn't the home I loved. It's got the very blurry shape of furniture I once loved, but when I sit down, I have the urge to cry.
