due diligence fandom: おっさんずラブ | Ossan's Love (TV 2016) rated E (PWP), M/M (maki ryota/haruta soichi)
Haruta swallows down the strange weight in his pit of his stomach. He doesn't know what he wants, but he—he wants Maki to feel good, wants to show Maki that he's serious about all of this.
#ossan's love#おっさんずラブ#makiharu#牧春#binged the drama on the plane to japan#and then became very sad about the relative dearth of english fic out there#so here is my humble contribution to the cause#written in a single go while in the throes of truly awful jetlag (and unedited) so pls have mercy but Yeah

[OS] Here I'm before watching ep.19 and what I see? A reminder about ep.20. I don't know what's gonna happen, I'm definitely not ready and I'm already stressed. I'm just glad that at least I don't need to wait. Eeeeeeeee
hehehehe..... Good Luck

Hello! I'm currently watching OS thanks to your subtitles :) (thank you very much for your work) and I'm writing this bc I wanna scream (I'm probably late to the party). Ep.6 was a whole ride. From grotesque scenes with mr. Chen Mingyang's family (that fake crying and Chi Zheng's reactions. Gold.) to that "hunter-evil queen-Snow White" situation (pardon my comparison). Ahhh for now this series is sooooo good. I didn't even known I needed something like this (chinese dramas spoils me). Greetings!
you’re very welcome!! so glad you’re enjoying the show <3

Hi, first off, it's nice to see you posting stuff again :D And then, for the fic title thing, maybe... "watching over you." Also feel free to ignore that and talk about any WIPs you might have!
hehehe thank you!! i’m happy 2 see familiar names + faces <3 man, have i gotten over chilu? no, of course not, who do you think i am (god i want to finish these wip’s and post them eventually but)
god i actually rly want to write something like that, i’ve been meaning to just write some soft domestic night-at-home type thing to make up for the general bustle of my life lately — just want to like, live vicariously thru my otp, y’feel? and that kind of title either screams to me smth like that — watching over someone as they sleep, sorta w all that gentle trust + soft fondness, or...
or... something angsty.. haha... watching over someone..... at a distance...... hahahaha

- advanced japanese iii (~4th yr course, around JLPT N2)
- chinese for scholarly conversation
- intro to classical chinese (文言文... actually possibly my easiest class?)
- elementary korean i (for fun)
- comprehensive chinese history survey course on the mandarin-language discussion section track (”:
#my japanese might actually be catching up to my chinese tbh#my brain doesn't work in mandarin i s2g#anyway this is why i've been completely dead lately rip#how's everyone been doing#xia talks

When I was in Kunming I got this fun lil book 给孩子的有趣汉字书 (A Book of Interesting Hanzi for Kids) so thought maybe I’d start sharing some pages. I don’t really have a go-to etymology dictionary; The Outlier Dictionary add-on for pleco is ok so far but $$. This calligraphy dictionary will give you the various forms but not any info, this will give you a little bit more but honestly yikes the nerve of a white dude that took 20 years to figure out how characters work calling himself “Uncle Hanzi” 🤮 Anyway, just tread carefully, take it as a fun side quest that sometimes helps explain things and sometimes not at all.
China has a long philological tradition, the《说文解字》”Explaining Graphs (marks) and Analyzing Characters” is probably the most well-known character dictionary and the first to organize entries by what we now call radicals. Written in the Han dynasty, it helps give us an idea of character origins and what they maybe used to be pronounced like. It’s cool! Here’s a partial facsimile!
So that bring us to the first line: 万,虫也。象形。 “万, a bug. Pictogram”
也 here is a Classical particle used at the end of statements. Since Classical Chinese did not use punctuation there are many sentence final particles that help you interpret correctly.
象形 describes characters that are meant to look like what they represent, aka pictograms. There are 6 types of characters in traditional sorting, and while “little pictures” are strong in the popular imagination they are actually the minority of modern characters. This is a good example, in that 万 is no longer used to mean “scorpion” but because it was a homophone with 10,000 gradually came to be used for that meaning entirely. (how did scorpion drift to 蝎子 xiezi is another story)
The rest is really only elaboration on that so I will leave it to you if you’re curious. Less intro next time more character thoughts !(•̀ᴗ•́)و ̑̑
#nice nice#ive been studying classical chinese rly hard this semester and like#etymology has been a super cool thing#my prof also gets rly into phonetic reconstruction which im meh abt but#langblr
