“i love that. it’s without a doubt the cutest thing i’ve heard all day.” she replies brightly. a little positivity went a long way and olive needed a lot more of that in her life. “sketching?” she questions, eyebrows lifting as she makes a connection with the notebook she previously made note of. “yeah, that makes perfect sense. don’t know why i didn’t realize that.” she’s running a little on the slow side today. perhaps a nap later on will do her some good. (she makes mental note of that). olive scoots over to the other female, glancing around to try to catch sight of what made her stop in the middle of the room. “do i like to draw?” she can’t help but laugh, “i do! i’m not very good at it though. i can draw enough to make basic designs for my embroidery.” she pauses, curiosity eating away at her. “what were you sketching?”

“ that’s really sweet of you to say, and is probably the nicest thing i’ve heard all day, so thanks! ”    positivity comes easily to xiaohui, but it’s nice to hear that it helps other people in one way or another.    “ don’t worry about it ; we’ve all got off days. i had one the other week when i stuck my pencil in my bun and couldn’t find it for at least half an hour. ”    a chuckle escapes her at the memory, and her smile grows as the other girl scoots closer.    “ just the windowsill over there. ”    she gestures vaguely to the wall in front of her.    “ i thought the plant was cute, ’nd catching little moments of daily life is kinda my thing ; people when they’re not looking, streets i walk through, little details — that type of stuff. ”    it’s the main reason she always has a sketchbook with her, and this afternoon is just another example of inspiration striking at random moments.    “ but embroidery sounds really cool! i have nowhere near enough patience, but i’ve always thought it’s a neat art form. what kind of designs are your favorite to do? ”

almost as soon as he sat down, xiaohui was up and ready to get food. the most he could do was nod for a moment when she began to wander off, but after a moment he shouted out “ get something good! ” like it wasn’t a given that she would do exactly that. left to watching their stuff, jonas idly drummed his fingers on the table and watched the nearby residents and tourists wander around the night market. she came back minutes later, much to jonas’ excitement; she always got the best of what the night market had to offer. it often made his choices seem rather lackluster in comparison, but he didn’t mind. it just mean that they’d be eating good food. “ you take my top choices, it’s not fair. ” he teased as he rose from his seat, and a frown soon after took over as he caught a whiff of what xiaohui had bought. “ i’ll be right back. ”

minutes later, he came back baring two dishes that in no way rivaled her three, but he got one of each for them. “ eomuk guk and cheese corn dogs at your service. ” he grinned as he approached their table once more and sat down. “ before i go silent for ten minutes, how are you? ” he had hardly even greeted his friend before they both set off for their food; and once he was able to eat, it became a primary focus of his. “ how’s work been? ”

she rolls her eyes at jonas’ teasing, though it's probably for the best that he leaves before she can come up with a good retort ; waiting for him to return with the tantalizing smells right under her nose is almost painful. still, she manages somehow, busying herself with arranging the food she’d bought in the middle of their table where they’ll both be able to reach.

the time passes quickly, and a soft ooh escapes her as he sits down.    “ i’ve been absolutely craving those corn dogs, pass them over! ”    one of said corn dogs is in her mouth only moments later — turns out his restraint is much greater than hers. at his question, however, she swallows quickly, just as eager to catch up with her friend as she is to eat.    “ work’s been good! the kids are pretty well behaved at the moment, and i got permission to lead an art class, which has been amazing. kids can be so creative, and they keep coming up with ways of doing things i’d never have thought of. it’s like a new adventure every day! ”    it would be impossible for her to stop the grin that appears when talking about her job, so she doesn’t even try.    “ how about you? any interesting people come to the cafe or to buy books recently? ”

2 year olds are known for many things but one of them isn’t really self control. jinah kang was generally a very well adjusted and well behaved young girl. in fact people often praised aiden on how well he was raising her. of course he wouldn’t really deny that she was well raised, he couldn’t really take all of it on himself. one of his own pit falls was his lack of self confidence when it came to how he was raising his daughter. so it’s just another normal afternoon until jinah decides she wants to get out and play. and in fact that is what she does.

running out into the common room with her father running after her in what would only look like a game. that is until little jinah runs smack dab into a woman seemingly drawing the plant in front of her.

“ jinah ! please watch where you are going ! ” aiden scolds, quickly picking up the toddler. “ i’m so sorry. ” he goes on looking at the woman whom his daughter just ran into.

xiaohui is quite used to being run into by kids, so that wasn’t what surprised her ; what was different, however, was the fact that she was at the share house and not at work, where most of the child related collisions happened. xiaohui stands as the child in question’s father picks her up, habit causing her to get on the same level as the parents when talking about their kids.    “ oh, don’t worry about it — i’ve had way worse. this little bean was just having fun, and it’s my own fault for being in the way. ”    she taps the little girl’s nose, scrunching her own up as she does so, then smiles at the giggles that result.    “ i don’t quite remember her name, but you’re aiden, right? ”    she looks up at him, though a sheepish grin appears on her face a moment later when she realizes that just because she knows his name doesn’t mean he knows hers.    “ i’m xiaohui! i live on the floor below you ; that is, i’m pretty sure i’ve seen you around the haean building so that’s just where i assumed you lived. ”

grocery bag hangs between the bend of his arm, hand busy holding a light green popsicle. unfortunately, he’d had to move quicker from the store than he wanted or else there’d be melted melon all over his hand. summer was just the best time to eat them! instead making the usual b-line for his room ( not that he doesn’t like interacting with his share-mates, he just didn’t always have the energy ) he heads for the kitchen. he jolts to a stop when he nearly collides with the person standing in the middle of the room, but not before his popsicle slips from his grasp making a sad splat to the ground.    “ damn…  ”    he sighs, maneuvers around the housemate, and finds a paper towel.    “  what’s got you so determined?  ”    jem can’t blame her for standing right in the middle of the room. he recognizes the action. he’d say it was artist inspiration that is making her forego the rest of the world and just be in her little bubble. he’s only mildly sad his popsicle had to suffer for it.

her mouth opens slightly at the sight of splattered popsicle — once she sees that its erstwhile owner is okay, however, the shock turns overly dramatic and a hand goes to xiaohui’s heart.    “ i am so sorry for your loss ; truly a tragic occasion. ”    a giggle escapes her, though it’s more sheepish than excited.    “ all teasing aside, my bad. i was sketching this cute new plant, ‘n i guess i didn’t think about being in anyone’s way. ”    she cranes her neck back slightly to be able to look her flatmate in the face as he draws closer.    “ here, let me — i’m already down here, and it’s technically my fault. ”    a hand extends to take the towel he’s bringing back, eyes scrunched up in a smile.

okay, so maybe it’s a little hard to stay peeved at a girl who was obviously just innocently minding her own business. dabin only lets himself frown for a moment before he tips his weight, settling on his bottom on the floor and propping an elbow against his knee. “hey, no need to be sorry. honestly, i should’ve been actually looking at where i’m going.” it’s then that he remembers he’d been looking at his phone, and he quickly pulls it out of his back pocket to make sure it was in working order. “okay,” he says after heaving a sigh of relief, holding the phone. “now, it’s okay. but anyways, give a guy some pointers!” dabin leans in to peek at what she’s already got down on the page, scratching at his forehead as if that would help him make sense of what he’s seeing. “i can’t even draw a circle properly.” actually, he can’t do a lot of things, but no need to lay all that onto a random housemate. “what’s so special about the angle down here?”

she watches him check his phone, a sigh of her own escaping when it turns out to be intact. those things are expensive, and she’d hate to be the reason one breaks.    “ i’ll sure try! though i’ve only ever met one person who can draw a circle right the first time, so don’t let that stop you from trying! ”    her smile grows at the prospect of talking about art ; it’s probably her favorite subject to talk about, and she’s always happy to dive into the technical side of the topic.    “ well, it’s less about the angle and more about the way the shadows look. see, if I was looking at this standing up then the shadows would make the windowsill really dark ; because I’m down here, however, the light is perfect. see the shadows? especially here — ”    she gestures from the scene in front of them to her notebook, pointing out a few specific corners    “ —and here. ”

“i didn’t really make things any better, did i?” olive chuckles, pushing her hair out of her face to get a clear look at the other female. “i just moved in last week,” olive leans forward to clasp the other’s hand, shaking it just as her father taught her to do so. ‘pleasure to meet you! i’m olive!” curious eyes scan the scene, head tilting in genuine confusion as she bares a small grin. “sooo, what were you doing in the middle of the floor, anyway?” olive notices the notebook but it didn’t hurt to receive some clarity. “did you get some divine inspiration in the middle of nowhere?” that would explain a lot. olive has been in that same spot before. that overwhelming rush of yes… i must do that right this second.

xiaohui waves a hand in the air as to dismiss the thought of the other holding any blame.    “ meh, doesn’t really matter who made it worse or whatever — it made us meet, didn’t it? totally worth it. ”    making new friends is very high up on xiaohui’s list of favorite things to be doing, and she’s able to dismiss the circumstances quite easily, a grin appearing at the other’s question.    “ i was sketching! nothing quite so dramatic as ‘divine’ though ; i just saw this cute little moment and wanted to capture it! ”    she shrugs, not seeing that much unusual in the situation.    “ do you like to draw? ”

it’s an…odd sight, that’s for sure. frankie can’t help the way his walk slows into a pause, standing awkwardly in the doorway as his head tilts to figure out exactly why xiaohui’s sitting on the floor of the common area. if it wasn’t the afternoon, he’d liken her to a woman possessed, sat unmoving in the middle of the room as though they were in a horror movie. he takes a tentative step, and then another, curiously trying to get as good of a look at what she’s doing as he can.

❝ xiaohui. ❞ he feels silly at the way he startles slightly when she turns her head to look at him, and frankie clears his throat as he rubs a hand across his chest–as though that would ease his rapidly beating heart. idiot. his mind supplies as he looks her over. no pitch black eyes. nothing out of the ordinary. he can already hear jem’s voice in the back of his head calling him out for being dramatic. his eyebrows furrow with a soft laugh, and frankie moves to sit down next to her on the slightly chilled floor. ❝ what are you doing? ❞

“ frankie! ”    her head tilts slightly to the side at his response, a question on the tip of her tongue, but he laughs a moment later and so she shrugs it off. the smile returns as he sits next to her, and she holds out a hand to show him what she’s been working on.    “ i’m drawing the new plant we got! ”    a chuckle escapes her, the idea sounding slightly more absurd out loud than it had in her head.    “ kinda silly, i know, but i really like the way it looks right now. plus, i’m gonna try to teach my kiddos how to draw a still life soon, and i wanted a recent example. ”    the sketch is far enough along that she will only need to touch up a few lines later, so she easily sets it aside in her mind, turning slightly to face her housemate.    “ what are you up to? ”
