YOGA WORKS TO HELP US REFLECT AND MOVE INTO THE NEW YEAR...
The term Svadyaya comes from Patanjali’s Sutras and is the fourth Niyama (personal observance). In Sanskrit, sva means “self;” dhyaya translates as contemplating, or reflecting upon. As we head into a new year how might the reflections we observe in all aspects of our lives be helpful as images that guide us towards living the best we can?
I like the way Gary Kraftsow describes Svadyaya in the Yoga Journal (https://www.yogajournal.com/yoga-101/polishing-the-mirror) as a way of tuning into our inner navigator. He asks the questions ‘Where am I now, and where am I going? What is my direction, and what are my aspirations? What are my responsibilities? What are my priorities?’ (Kraftsow retrieved 12 January 2017).

YOGA WORKS... to help us chill out in the festive season
It’s December, the sun is out and the countdown is on for the end of the year. We have three more classes of Yoga before we take a break for the Christmas period. Thanks for continuing to support the classes with both Liana and I in the transition between both of us teaching and while I learn to continue a teaching practice while managing a small baby.
While taking a ‘pause’ so as to encourage Franca to sleep today I reflected on the idea of ‘non-doing’ or the space that is created when we do less. Adjusting to motherhood over the last six months there have been many times when ‘non-doing’ seems to be a challenging space to hold. The ‘void’ or the space between is known as ‘te kore’ in Maori and ‘shoonya’ in sanskrit. In an era when we are almost always ‘doing’ I consider how we might explore the void, or the space between as a place of potential and possibility. Heading into the busy Christmas period perhaps we can focus on considering these notions of ‘non-doing’ as a space of ‘potential’ rather than ‘nothingness’ in our practice and in our daily lives.
NEWS:
Workshop: Sharon Lightfoot’s workshop ‘Moving with Joy’ is this Saturday and there are still a couple of places left. 9th December 2-4pm $45 at The Yoga tree 247 Lake Road Takapuna Contact Sharon on [email protected]
Last class for 2017: 21 December
Start date for 2018: 18th January
