Independence Day Renamed to Co-Dependence Day, U.S. Can’t Let Go of Native Land
WINDOW ROCK- A Radical coalition of Navajos put forth the legislation, N8YE-1868, which would have the Navajo Nation rename the national holiday to something more historically correct. The coalition, Navajos Against Yucky Euphemisms, want to bring attention to the real meaning of Independence Day.
It has been 242 years since the U.S. have formed on stolen land and many Indigenous people recognize this reality, the dependency of U.S. on Indigenous land. Many historians call the U.S.A. one of the awkward flat mate situations of human history.
Tlo’chi’iin spoke to one of the leaders, Joselyn Bia, to get a the platform and the strategy of the coalition.
“It begins with 1492 and solidifies itself in 1776”, she said. “They are the worst roommates and they haven’t paid their rent in 242 years”. “They cause more problems since their arrival and did I mention genocide”? “We want them to recognize their codependency on our land”.
“They claim to be independent but they wouldn’t be sh*t without our land”.
Much of the development of the U.S. comes at the expense of Indigenous people and land so the dependency is clearly seen. Tlo’chi’iin spoke to government employees and veterans about the potential name change.
“I don’t really care because it does not bother me” one employee said.
“I am not sure which flag I should salute, I usually just salute the American Flag” said one veteran.
Many Navajos are passive about the legislation and it is suspected to not pass. It is exceptional that such a legislative process related to the U.S. would get this far in the Navajo government. Many Council delegates admitted that they did not read the legislation.

A Yale study suggests that sad, lonely introverts are natural born social psychologists. It found that introverts who are prone to melancholy are exceptionally good at accurately assessing truths about human social behavior, without formal training or tools.

In 1915, a woman was late to her sister’s funeral. When she arrived, she demanded that her sister be let out the coffin so that she can see her one last time. Upon opening the coffin, the dead woman ‘sat up’ and smiled. She lived for another 47 years.
