About the exhibition  “What does it mean for us to survive?” For Yong Joo Kim, making art is a way of exploring this simple yet complex question.

In her 10 year career, she was able to continuously create new pieces of art while limiting herself to the use of a single material: hook-and-loop fasteners. But there was a day, when she began to doubt whether she can continue to survive while still constraining herslf to this single material. One could say that an artist survives by continuously creating new works of art. But on the day, she could no longer experience sufficient newness from her work. Determined to survive, she decided to introduce a radical shift in her practice. Unwilling to shift her choice of material, she decided to shift the physical scale of her work to a size significantly larger than she had previously attempted.

Soon after she introduced a scale-shift in her practice, she confronted an unexpected challenge. As she began to construct works of art that were significantly larger, an element she had all but ignored thus far reared its ugly head: an element called “gravity.” As she attempted to make work that stood tall, gravity dragged it down. As she attempted to make work that stood broad, gravity made it slouch. It was an experience that made her seriously wonder if it was time for her to give up the limitation of being constrained to this single material. It all but seemed inevitable that her survival as an artist would soon otherwise come to an end. It was only after she had completed a new body of work that she came to realize that overcoming such threat to one’s survival is critical to creating works of art that are surprisingly new to the creator and, as an extension, to the audience.

There is a time when an “other” previously considered unworthy of recognition rises to become a formidable opponent. At this juncture, we are forced to confront this other as there forms a threshold between them and ourselves. She would like to call this the “Threshold of Respect.” To cross this threshold, we must not only recognize the existence of this other, but also learn to respect them. It is no easy task to respect our opponent. However, if we can respect them, we can also leverage them as helpers instead of opponents. In other words, we can produce output that are possible precisely because of their existence. Since we never anticipated their existence prior to producing such output, their form necessarily sits beyond the boundaries of our imagination and is thus naturally surprisingly to us as creators. This exhibition is a collection of output that were produced as a byproduct of my exploration into this phenomena.

About Yong Joo Kim  Yong Joo Kim is a Society of Arts and Crafts (SAC) and NICHE award-winning artist with an extensive record of exhibitions across Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia. She is considered a pioneer in the use of hook-and-loop fasteners as material for art. Her work crosses the genre of both wearable sculpture and installations. She has been a featured speaker at premier conferences and exhibitions such as the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) and Sculpture Objects Functional Art and design (SOFA). Her work appears in the permanent collection of Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s Art Bank (MMCA), and Velcro Group.

존중의 문턱 Threshold of Respect 김용주 개인전

서울, 사간동에 위치한 호아드 갤러리에서 작가 김용주의 ‘존중의 문턱’ 전을 오는 11월 28일 (수) 부터 12월 5일 (수)까지 8일동안 개최한다. 이번 전시는 벨크로라는 일상생활에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 평범한 소재를 작품의 주재료로 사용하여 생존, 다양성, 숙련의 관계를 연구하는 김용주 작가의 벽 설치 작품 9여점,  장신구 작품 30여 점을 선보일 예정이다.

작가노트 “생존한다는 것은 우리에게 무슨 의미일까?” 나에게 예술을 창작함은 이처럼 단순하면서도 복잡한 질문을 파고드는 것이다.

본인은 작가 생활 10년간 갈고리와 걸림 고리 부착식 직물 (이하 ‘벨크로') 이라는 재료 하나만을 가지고 지속적으로 새로운 작품을 만들어 내었다. 그러던 중, 내가 과연 벨크로 하나만을 가지고 앞으로도 계속 작가로 살아남을 수 있을지 의문이 들었던 적이 있다. 작가란 끊임없이 새로운 작품을 만들어 내며 생존하는 존재라고 할 수 있다. 그런데 어느 순간부터 나의 작품에서 충분한 새로움을 느낄 수 없게 된 것 이었다. 앞으로 더 새로운 작품을 만들 수 없다면 작가로서의 생이 마감된다는 생각에 더욱 경이로운 새로움을 느껴보고자 나는 지금까지 시도해 보지 못한 거대 규모의 작품 창작에 도전하기로 했다.

그렇게 도전을 시작한 얼마 후, 지금까지의 창작 과정에서 겪어 본 그 어떤 상황보다도 더 감당하기 힘든 상황을 맞이하게 되었다. 장신구와 같이 작은 규모의 작품에서 벽에 설치하는 큰 규모의 작품을 만들려고 하니 존재하는지조차 잊고 있었던 중력이라는 요소가 나의 작업을 방해하기 시작한 것이다. 위로 솟구쳐 올라가고자 하는 형태는 중력에 의해 처참히 밑으로 끌어 내려졌고, 웅장함을 지향했던 작품은 초라하게 바닥에 축 늘어져 버렸다. 순간 큰 작품을 만들어내기에 벨크로라는 재료는 한없이 부족해 보였고, 역시 벨크로라는 재료 단 하나를 사용하며 끊임없이 새로운 작품을 만드는 것은 포기해야 하는가 하는 좌절로 작가로서의 생존에 위협을 느끼게 되었던 것이다. 이와 같은 생존 위협의 기점이 바로 작가에게, 그리고 더 나아가서 관객에게, 경이롭도록 새로운 경험을 선사하는 작품을 만들고자 할 때 반드시 넘어야 하는 고비라는 것은 작업을 완성한 후에야 비로소 깨닫게 되었다.

나에게 존재의 가치조차 인정받지 못하고 있던 존재가 심각한 방해물로 다가올 때가 있다. 이때 그는 더이상 무시할 수 없는 대상이 되고 우리와 그의 사이에는 넘기 힘든 문턱이 생긴다. 이 문턱을 나는 “존중의 문턱"이라 부르고 싶다. 그 문턱을 넘으려면 그의 존재 가치를 인정해야 함은 물론 존중 또한 하지 않으면 불가능하기 때문이다. 우리를 방해하는 상대를 존중하는 일은 보통 어려운 것이 아니다. 하지만 존중할 수 있다면 우리를 방해하는 요소에 방해를 받지 않고 오히려 도움을 받을 수 있게 된다. 즉 그 방해물이 존재하기 덕분에 그를 활용하였을 때 비로소 나올 수 있는 결과물을 창작할 수 있게 된다는 뜻이다. 처음 작업을 시작하였을 때는 이와 같은 방해물을 전혀 예상치 못하기에 이런 과정에서 나온 창작물은 당연히 상상력의 한계를 벗어나게 된다. 따라서 이런 창작물을 마주할 때 우리는 작가로서 경이로운 새로움을 느낄 수 밖에 없는 것이다. 본 전시에서 소개되는 작품들은 이와 같은 현상의 탐구를 토대로 파생된 산물이다.

김용주 작가소개 대한민국 출생의 작가 김용주는 서울 숙명여자대학교 공예과 학사 학위를 받은 후, 미국 로드아일랜드 스쿨오브 디자인 (Rhode Island School of Design, RISD)에서 주얼리와 금속과정으로 석사학위를 받았다. 미국, 유럽, 아시아, 호주에서 총 6회의 개인전과 50여회 이상의 단체전시에 참여한 그녀는 1897년에 창립된 미국에서 가장 오래된 비영리 공예협회(The Society of Arts and Crafts)가 주관하는 2014 아티스트 어워드의 대상에 선정되어 장학금을 받았다. 2015년 5월 미국 보스턴에서 열린, 북미금속공예학회 (SNAG Society of North American Goldsmiths Conference )에서 ‘생존, 다양성 그리고 숙련’을 주제로 초청강연을 하는 영광을 누리기도 하였다. 또한, 2013년 세계 최고의 개체 기능성 조각 예술 박람회 (소파 시카고 SOFA Sculpture Objects Functional Art + Design Chicago)에 초정되어 ‘예술: 아름다움의 발굴’을 주제로 강연하였다.  

그녀의 작품은 2015년 제9회 청주국제공예공모전 특선에 선정되었으며, 2013년 독일 뮌헨에서 열린 국제공예공모전 탈렌테 (TALENTE) 장신구 부문에 선발되었고, 2012년 니쉬어워드 ( NICHE AWARD) 조각장신구 부문에서 대상을 받았으며, 2011년 필라델피아 아트 뮤지엄 크래프트쇼가 주체하는 섬유 부문 대상 (Adrianna Farrelli Prize)을 수상하였다. 벨크로로 만들어진 그녀의 작품은 현재 영국의 왕립박물관 빅토리아 알버트 (V&A), 미국 뉴욕 아트디자인 박물관(MAD), 미국 벨크로기업 본사, 남호주미술관(AGSA), 미국 LA카운티미술관 (LACMA), 국립현대미술관 미술은행의 영구소장품으로 선정되어 있으며, 벨크로 소재로 예술작품을 만든 세계 최초의 장인 겸 작가로 이름을 알리고 있다.

#HOWArtMuseum is pleased to announce that “Three Times” opened this afternoon under the joint efforts with College of Design and Innovation (D&I), Tongji University. The event consists of exhibition, symposium, lectures and workshops. The exhibition, which comprises four sections– Intimate Encounter, Like Attracts Like, Arty Game, and Viva La Different, will display 500 pieces of artworks created by nearly 300 artists from 34 countries and regions. The artworks in the “Intimate Encounter” section were selected through a public invitation that was open internationally for 18 months, the pieces in “Like Attracts Like” were selected and sent by international galleries, “Arty Game” consists of artworks from outstanding contemporary visual artists, while “Viva La Different” features a collection selected by curators from ten countries and regions. _ This biennale will inspire intriguing exploration and dialogue between time and space. Timewise, it showcases the past – tradition and singularity, the present – existence of diverse values and dimensions, and the future – a reality that not yet exists and has every possibility. Spacewise, it connects Shanghai, one of the world’s top metropolitans; China, a rising nation; and the whole world, an ever-changing arena. .

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Art Bank, Seoul, South Korea acquires Yong Joo Kim’s Necklace as part of their permanent collection.

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Art Bank, Seoul, South Korea has acquired artist Yong Joo Kim’s necklace as part of their permanent collection. This acquisition was made on November 22nd, 2017.

The necklace titled “Crossing the Chasm Op.5” is made of hook-and-loop fastener and thread. The acquisition of Yong Joo Kim’s work was handled by the MMCA Art Bank Division in Gwacheon as part of an ongoing effort by the MMCA Art Bank to acquire outstanding work of painting, calligraphy, craft, print, sculpture, installation, and photography produced by Korean artists. The effort intends to stimulate Korea’s art market, popularize art culture and realize cultural rights by purchasing, renting, and exhibiting works by Korean artists.

About MMCA Art Bank   The national Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(MMCA) Art Bank was established in February 2005 to support the growth of Korea’s art and culture scene, stimulate the art market and promote the people’s cultural rights. Art Bank purchases quality artwork through various routes. They also rent and exhibits such art work at government institutions, culture and arts organizations, and companies, so that they can be enjoyed by the greater public. Selected artworks are displayed at overseas government offices, promoting Korean contemporary art all over the world.

About the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Since opening its doors in 1969 as the only national art museum in Korea to accommodate modern and contemporary art of both Korea and international origin from different time periods, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) of Korea has lived through the history of Korean art. 신당창작아케이드, 청년공예작가를 위한 축제 <향유공예>展 개최

▶<향유공예>展 오는 8일(금) 개막... 홍대 앞 젊은 공간 3곳서 작가 58명의 150여 점 전시 ▶<청년예술인 창작지원사업> 공예작가 각 200만원 지원금 결과 선봬.... 현대 공예작품 만끽 ▶‘취향에 취하다’, ‘유용한 일상’, ‘공예에 반하다’ 등 전시장마다 다른 기획 이어져 ▶순회 전시 설명 및 작가대담 오는 13일(수) 오후 1시부터 디티에이블서 출발

서울문화재단(대표이사 주철환) 신당창작아케이드는 청년 공예 작가에게 창작활동비를 지원한 <청년예술인 창작지원사업>의 사업성과를 보여주는 전시프로젝트 <향유(享有)공예>를 오는 8일(금)부터 22일(금)까지 씨알콜렉티브, 산울림아트앤크래프트, 디티에이블 등 서울 서교동 3곳의 전시장에서 진행한다.

서울문화재단의 <청년예술인 창작지원사업>은 사회에 첫 발을 내딛는 초년생 예술가들의 창작활동을 지원하는 사업이다. 올해 공공지원금 수혜 경력이 없는 39세 이하 또는 데뷔 10년 이하 청년예술인과 단체 약 900명(팀)에 56억 원을 직간접적으로 지원하고 있으며, 그 중 공예 작가 100명은 정산 없이 활동결과를 보고하는 조건으로 200만 원씩을 지원받았다.

청년공예작가들의 다양한 작품을 주제별로 살펴볼 수 있는 이번 전시는 ▲청년예술인의 개성이 돋보이는 현대 공예작품 90여 점으로 구성된 ‘향(香, 취향에 취하다)’展(~13일, 씨알콜렉티브) ▲일상 속 공예의 유용한 쓰임을 제안하는 생활 공예작품 50여 점으로 구성된 ‘유(有, 유용한 일상)’展(13~22일, 산울림아트앤크래프트) ▲가구작가 이종명, 윤정무, 이문혁 3인전 ‘공예에 반하다’展(13~22일, 디티에이블) 등으로 구성됐다.

특별전에 참여하는 이문혁(27) 작가는 고교 유도 국가대표선수 출신으로, 부상으로 뒤늦게 공예작가의 길로 들어서 이번에 처음 지원금을 받고 전시를 하게 됐다. 주로 소품에 활용되는 레진이라는 재료를 가구제작에 활용하는 선보이는 이 작가는 “처음에는 색약 때문에 작업이 쉽지 않았다”라며, “이런 핸디캡이 오히려 나만의 색감을 표현하는데 도움이 된다는 믿음을 갖고 앞으로 독창적인 색을 가진 공예작가가 될 것”이라고 포부를 밝혔다.

1부 ‘향(香)’展이 끝나고 2부 ‘유(有)‘展이 시작되는 13일(수) 오후 1시에는 디티에이블과 산울림 아트앤크래프트에서 오화진 섬유공예가, 이종명 목가구 작가, 《공예+디자인》 김태완 편집장 등 전시기획자 청년공예작가들과 함께하는 전시장 순회가 진행된다. 3시부터 씨알콜렉티브에서 이어지는 ’아티스트토크‘에서는 청년공예작가들이 전시 출품 작품을 직접 발표하는 자리가 열린다. 이 행사에는 사전 신청 없이 누구나 참여할 수 있다.

이번 전시는 <청년예술인 창작지원사업> 공예분야 100명의 선정작가 중 도자, 금속, 섬유, 목 등 공예계 전 분야에서 활동하는 청년공예작가 58명의 열정과 패기를 담기 위해 기획됐다.

서울문화재단 주철환 대표이사는 “<향유공예>展은 이제 막 사회로 발을 내딛는 청년공예작가 58명의 참신한 아이디어와 선배 기획자 3명의 경험이 어우러져 공예의 다양성을 공유할 수 있는 뜻깊은 전시가 될 것으로 기대한다”라며 “재단은 <청년예술인 창작지원사업>을 이어가며 예술가와 시민이 예술을 향유하는 기회를 지속적으로 만들기 위해 노력할 것“이라고 말했다.

▪️산울림 아트 앤 크래프트 기획전시 『풀고 또 이음 Unhook and Connect』展에는 34명의 작가가 고유의 관심사와 개성을 바탕으로 제작한 100여 점의 목걸이가 전시된다. 목걸이는 소재와 무게뿐만 아니라 전통과 인습 등 제작시 고려해야 할 요소가 상대적으로 많은 장신구이다.특히 인체의 입체 구조를 이해하지 못하면 바르게 기능하는 목걸이를 만들기란 쉽지 않다.본 전시에 참여한 작가들은 3점 가운데 1점씩을 기획자가 정한 동일한 길이와 일치된 형식의 잠금장치를 가지며 단독으로 착용이 가능한 것으로 제작하였고, 변화된 시대의식과 주관적 미감에 따라 관람자가 2~3개의 목걸이를 주체적으로 연결함으로써 사용자 중심의 새로운 목걸이를 완성하는 색다른 경험을 할 수 있게 하였다. 이로써 단순 감상자로서의 역할을 넘어 적극적 전시 참여자로서 관람자의 지위 상승을 꾀하고자 한다. 그러므로 이 전시회는 관람자들에 의해 비로소 완전해지는 형식을 취한다. 공예품 감상에 있어 관람자의 보다 세밀한 관찰과 창작자와 소비자 간의 긴밀한 소통 및 교류를 기대하며 이번 전시를 기획하였다. - 조성호
