speaking of people who are bizarrely clueless: i used to have a coworker who would frequently talk about her financial troubles while raising an autistic son with higher needs, so she decided to..................... get a dog! because somehow this dog would magically teach her son to do chores and be more responsible also she could tooootally train it to become the perfect service dog? mind you, her son didn't even want a dog. i made some offhand comments about how expensive and time-consuming caring for a new dog because i could tell this was a fucking stupid idea.

but! instead of changing her mind or even just adopting a dog, she decided to purchase a purebred puppy from a breeder for over 1000USD. and then about a month later she admitted that i was right and it was expensive and exhausting as hell caring for this puppy by herself because her son either wouldn't or couldn't look after it, and she had no idea how to train it to be a service dog.

she also asked me if it was normal for her puppy to be interested in chasing birds and i said yeah. it's a dog. dogs tend do that.

last night, at the first class of the quarter, a lady with a group of teenage boys walks in and when greeted by the instructor says that they've never thrown on the wheel or used clay before.

"okay....." says the instructor. "wellllll there are intro classes. but this is a class for students with experience."

"why would we take an intro class???" says the lady. "we'll just take this class."

"you just said you've never worked with clay before?? this class isn't meant for beginners???" our beleaguered instructor explains. "i can't teach you and your boys because this class is meant for these experienced students and i won't have time to go through the basics with you guys."

"well no one told me anything!!!" says lady. (this is not true. the class description on the registration site clearly states it's not for beginners). "we don't want an intro class though. this is fine. we're not going to the intro class."

"what exactly were you planning to accomplish with this?"

"i figured we won't make anything tonight and just watch everyone else instead!"

[the rest of us gawking from the peanut gallery make a collective face of disgust at the idea of this lady and her teenage boys creeping behind us and breathing down our necks while we're trying to work]

"wait are your kids 18? this class is for adults you know. minors legally can't be here."

"yeah they're all 18" [a couple of them have the yee yee broccoli ass hair that high school freshman usually have]

"also we'll buy 2 beginner tool sets we can just share with each other."

meanwhile, her sons (i think they're all her sons?) are clustered together like lost goslings without a clue in the world.

the instructor is so baffled and distressed he calls the studio manager for help. in the end, the lady and her horde of broccoli boys leave the studio, to our unanimous relief. also, when registering for this class that was labeled NOT FOR BEGINNERS, they apparently purchased 6 25lb bags of the most expensive clay (that typically only advanced ceramicists use because of how finicky it is) that they won't get a refund on. they won't get a refund on any of it. they spent about 1400USD for this clown show.

the moral of the story is: sometimes gatekeeping is very necessary!

idk if things had changed after xc3 came out but xenoblade fandom had been one of the rudest fanbases i've seen when it came to interactions with overseas artists. ime in other fandoms, the worst would be awkwardly backhanded compliments, but xenoblade fans were so rude directly to artists' faces it was almost funny. some guy wandered onto a japanese yaoi artist's post demanding to know why they never drew any het. why no het?? can't you draw pyra/rex????// this artist's entire gallery was exclusively niche m/m ships. and then one of their pieces got reposted somewhere (it was a simple picture of rex) and the redditors were frantically warning each other not to look at the artist's profile because there was GAY MEN!!!!!!!!
