race side note: like frankly one of the reasons i love Rings of Power so much is it feels like the first part of the lotr IP that is acting normal about race

it's been So refreshing, and also realistic. Like yeah this culture based on the byzantine empire is gonna have mediteranean looking folk, and brown people. Yeah the hobbits who come from all over and travelled far to reach the shire are gonna look lots of different ways.

the worst part about rereading lord of the rings is having to re-reconcile myself with jrrt's implicit/subconscious racism

as much as i respect that he was outspokenly anti racist for the time, his congitive dissonance over having this good vs evil mythology where all the bad guys are "swarthy" or "sallow" is really hard to swallow :(

i even understand his reasoning - this is a romantic telling of events, not realism. he said himself that in reality there would be orcs on both sides. he decided it was best to show a "mythologised" story.

but he was simply wrong. there are glimmers of some Really interesting stuff - Sam's compassion towards the dead Harad soldier is a good example - but at other times he has characters we love acting in cruel and bizarre ways that relfect deeply 20th century/victorian sensibilities of race and race science - treebeard's speech for instance

A better mythology would not be so grounded in zeitgeist of one specific modern century, and not so blatantly betray his deeply held fears and anxieties about race and empire

It's difficult to look at this things I love and say that he should have done better, and there are aspects that make his work worse - and to still, ultimately, love the stories and the world and the linguistics.
