Dracule Mihawk from One Piece is a Black Hawk-eagle! (Spizaetus tyrannus)

Also called the tyrant hawk-eagle, this eagle species is native to the forests of Central and South America. It is a solitary raptor that, despite being smaller compared to other eagles, is capable of taking down prey of considerable size-- enough so to be colloquially in Brazil as the "Gavião-pega-macaco" ("monkey-catching hawk".)

Neku Sakuraba from TWEWY is a Margay! (Leopardus wiedii)

A unique species of cat with a solitary nature and incredible night vision, the margay is wholly adaptated for true aboreal life-- they have incredible joint flexibility in the hind legs, and are able to run headfirst down trees like squirrels! The margay is the first neotropical predator recorded as using mimicry, with calls able to closely imitate the vocalisation produced by their preferred prey-- in the original obeservation, specifically the sounds of a juvenile tamarin.

Raccoons have the most sensitive sense of touch in the entire animal kingdom, with more than ten times the number of touch receptors in their hands as humans! This sense of touch is further heightened when the hands are wet, causing the behavior that makes them appear to "wash" their food.

Nepeta Leijon from Homestuck is an African Golden Cat! (Caracal aurata)

The secretive third member of the Caracal lineage, these cats are difficult to observe in the wild and are regarded as one of the least-known species of felid in the world-- they are the only forest-dependant wild cats in Africa, endemic to the rainforests of West and Central Africa. The African Golden Cat is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List

A Brief Explanation...

You send me a character, I'll assign them an animal! (and try to provide a fun fact along with it.)

If I don't personally know a character or their source material, I will still do my best. Feel free to ask for the logic behind my assignments if it's not already included in the post-- I try my best to be thorough and will usually have some sort of explanation. As a note: please only send me fictional characters. I will not be assigning animals to real people! This blog also has zero tolerance for bigotry of any kind. My ask box is always open-- I'll get to submissions whenever I have time.

General FAQ:

Q: How does submitting characters work? A: Just use the ask box! All I need is the name of the character and the source material other than that, feel free to add as much about the character as you'd like! (general descriptions or specific details, explanations of plot/lore, your own animal suggestions, reference images, etc. Go wild!) (You'll be tagged in the main post, but the original ask will be private.) Q: Why are you doing this? A: I love animals, and tumblr users love fictional characters. Together we can all learn something new! (I'm currently working on getting a degree in biology with a specific focus in conservation ecology and this blog is a fun way to let my interests overlap.) Q: What's the process for choosing an animal? A: Pretty much anything! Sometimes visual appearance, sometimes folklore, sometimes just vibes. If I can't choose just one, I'll make a poll and let the good people of tumblr decide. Q: What animals can we expect to see? A: Anything in the animal kingdom is fair game, which also includes insects and spiders/arachnids. All posts will be tagged appropriately.

Q: What if my fictional character is already an animal? A: Trust the process... (re: feel free to send them anyways!)
