for today's rock that i'm thinking a lot about: orpiment ! most commonly found in volcanic fumaroles, low temp hydrothermal veins and hot springs!

orpiment has been used for thousands of years by a wide breadth of civilisations and was some of the strongest evidence Aristotle used to back up his theory of metals naturally occurring in the Earth! it was commonly believed that you could extract Gold from this mineral. you cannot, of course, but it did get used a lot for gold pigments - namely, gold paint in Ancient Egypt, Greece, Persia and a variety of Asian art.
and then we stopped doing that because it's toxic. Arsenic. so now its art use is in historical art restoration and pigment research!
some more common uses today include fireworks, production of infrared-transmitting glass, and semiconductors ! and when mixed with slaked lime, it is used a lot in rural India as a delipatory!
finding such beautiful crystallised forms of orpiment is rare, but ugh. isn't it stunning:

thinking about orpiment today. what a great rock.
