Dude the castle bleck part of the game must have been absolutely Nightmare Flue for Mario. He was basically watching all his allies -- two of whom were the love of his live and his own brother-- sacrifice themselves one by one and seemingly die. Of course they survived but he had no way of knowing that at that moment. In his eyes. Even if he did managed to defeat Count Bleck and stop the void he'd have to return home having lost the most important people in his life.

ON TOP OF THAT he was also given no time to properly grive any of them. He really had to just suck it up and keep going for the sake of the worlds. Thatisfuckedup.

And the Count Bleck battle was basically a lost cause up until the others showed up, like imagine the amount of despair he was feeling.
