still thinking about that r/hypotheticalsituation post where someone was like "what if a potato chip spawned somewhere randomly in the world. and every hour the number of potato chips at that location would double. and the only way to get rid of them for good would be to eat all of the potato chips before they doubled again." and someone calculated that it would only take like, 48 hours of people ignoring a weird pile of potato chips before an absolutely irreconcilable number of potato chips was blanketing a city.

and then people were like "no wait if it spawns randomly in the world, it's highly likely it would be in an ocean" and then people were debating whether there were enough small fish swimming at the surface in the open ocean that would be able to eat a potato chip and thus save humanity from the potato chip apocalypse.

Tom Paris is such an interesting character to me when it comes to mental health in a (presented as) perfect future. Joins Starfleet to impress his father and accidentally causes the deaths of three people, so he joins the Maquis, hoping he would die about it. He doesn't. He just goes to prison. He goes on Voyager and takes incredible risk after incredible risk, secretly hoping he would die about it. He doesn't. Instead, he finds a found family who loves him unconditionally and a best friend who is forever loyal to him and a lover who is willing to put up with him despite his flaws, but also pushes him to be a better person. And he's asked if he's happy, and he should be. He should say he's happy, but he's not.

Maybe if he breaks the transwarp threshold he'll be happy. Maybe if he's the best pilot in all of Starfleet history he'll be happy. Maybe if his father tells him he misses him and is proud of him he'll be happy. And sometimes he is, but there's still this lingering thing underneath. This One Big Thing. It follows him and haunts him like three ghosts (of Christmas past, present, and future?), or maybe it haunts him like his father. He spent a lot of time crying in his room when he was a kid.

Maybe the One Big Thing isn't even those people's deaths - he was already reckless. Maybe he was just like that. It's so interesting to live in the future, and not have a name for it, that thing. That lingering sadness underneath, that makes him want to fly a little too fast. The show would have us believe he's an adrenaline junkie, but I think that's only partially accurate. What a horror to live in a world of totally free mental healthcare and not know its name. Not guilt, not regret, not even shame. It showed up way before all that. He doesn't know the name of the thing that raised him more than his father, that's been there his entire life.

Its name, I think, is depression.
